XbDiag 1.0.9 Beta (feedback)

Hey all,

I’ve been working on a project called XbDiag for a while now and just wrapped up 1.0.9, which is probably the most stable and complete version so far.

The goal isn’t to replace everything, but to provide a single environment for diagnosing and validating original Xbox hardware.

Current coverage includes:

  • System info (hardware detection, clocks, EEPROM, etc.)
  • RAM testing + stress
  • CPU / GPU stress testing (thermal + stability focused)
  • SMBus scanning
  • HDD tools (identify, benchmark, SMART with decoded values)
  • EEPROM view + repair
  • Controller testing
  • Automation (set-and-forget test runs + report output)
  • Basic file explorer / FTP

A lot of the recent work in 1.0.9 focused on:

  • improving SMART decoding (less raw hex, more meaningful values)
  • fixing edge cases (input handling, stress behavior, etc.)
  • tightening up overall stability and consistency

It’s already being used a bit in the Xbox-Scene Discord for testing/benching consoles, and that’s been super helpful for catching weird edge cases (1.6 quirks, softmod stuff, etc.).

What I’m looking for:

  • real-world feedback
  • weird hardware behavior
  • edge cases / crashes
  • anything that feels off or confusing

I’m especially interested in:

  • different board revisions (1.0–1.6)
  • modchips / adapters
  • older or questionable HDDs
  • anything “non-standard”

Repo / downloads:

World's first Xbox "one"

Who else thinks the "Xbox One" is a stupid name? It's so easily confused with the original Xbox. I have fixed that issue by combining the 2, this is an Xbox one S that resembles an Xbox original. The 4 controller ports have been swapped for working USB ports, the power button works, the eject button works, and the Bluetooth pairing button is on the side, completely functional. All of this was incredibly hard because I did not solder at all during the process. Everything was done with hot glue, electrical tape, and super glue. Is it ideal? No. Does it work? Absolutely. This project has been in the works for about 5 years, I started when I was in 7th grade. Through many different attempts I've finally made it function every way I wanted. Although I did leave room for improvement. For instance, the light only turns on/off when the button is pressed, meaning it will stay on if you turn the console off through the UI. Also, during the process, I made a stupid decision to snip off one of the screw holes, so I had to superglue that side shut. Not ideal at all but it does the job and looks pretty doing it. Will be uploading a video on this soon

Console Modification Repaired a very fixable $34 Xbox only to discover it's previous owner modded it and it has hundreds if not thousands of classic games inside.

Sorry for the low quality pics, my camera is crap and these were taken hastily.

I picked up this Xbox Original for $34 at a store because I wanted to repair one to give to my nephew for his birthday. The disc tray wouldn't open and it turns out all it needed was a simple drive belt replacement. No problems. My first indication that something was strange was that the normally very spacious Xbox HDD had only half its memory blocks available.

And then, while I was testing it, I noticed the solid red light on the eject button. After a quick google, I saw this it wasn't an issue, but a sign that custom firmware was installed. After following some easy directions, I clicked RT+LT+Start+Black and it loaded me into a custom menu.

Inside this console I found emulators for a ton of classic consoles including

  • All sorts of classic arcade games like Outrun
  • Capcom/NeoGeo Arcade games
  • Each original Atari console
  • Atari Lynx
  • 2 Different NES emulators
  • 2 Different SNES emulators
  • N64
  • GameBoy
  • Sega Master System
  • Sega Genesis + 32x
  • TurboGrafx 16
  • NeoGeo
  • NeoGeo CD
  • NeoGeo Pocket
  • Magnavox Odyssey
  • Calecovision
  • Intellivision
  • Commodore 64

Each one of these emulators--excluding the Nintendo 64--has almost their entire North American libraries installed. And they run exceptionally well and look fantastic (pictures don't do them justice) They've fastforward and savestate capabilities along with custom modification menus and cheats. Whoever had this before me had turned this into the ultimate emulation machine but then dumped it simply because the belt drive became stretched and warped.

Keep in mind I chose this console completely at random from the 3 that were on the shelf for the same price. I have about 4 weeks until my nephew's birthday and so I'm going to absolutely wear this thing out before then. He's 13 and such a good kid--I cannot WAIT to give this to him. The only reason I'm not keeping it for myself is out of sheer principality! To keep this would render almost my entire current retro collection pointless!

My only issue is that I have absolutely no idea how UnleashX works. I tried looking up guides and tutorials and they seem really complicated and I don't have the proper hardware to connect it to PC. I'll dive into that on a later date I think.

I don't think I've ever been this lucky in my life.

Help Needed OG Xbox with Modchip and loose D0 Wire: Where exactly do I solder it?

Thumbnail

Hey everyone,

I’ve got an original Xbox (with a modchip installed, looks like an Aladdin-style chip with a 49LF020 flash) that’s having some issues. When I plug in the power cable it turns on by itself, the power and eject buttons don’t respond, the green light blinks, and there’s no video output.

I opened it up and found that the single white wire coming from the modchip is loose. From what I understand this should be the D0 wire that needs to be soldered to the motherboard’s D0 point so the chip can force a boot.

I’ve attached photos showing the modchip, the LPC wires, and the loose white wire (one of them has a red circle around the free end of the wire).

Can someone please point out (or mark on the photo) exactly where this wire needs to be soldered?

Is it on the top side near the MCPX / RAM area, or do I need to look on the bottom of the board?

Any help is much appreciated – thanks!

Partition F capped at 120GB. How to increase this?

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have spent hours on trying to transfer games and upgrade the drive on my Xbox. I now find out that my hard drive is capped at 120gb on fatxplorer. I used XBpartitioner on my Xbox to combine my G and F drive into 1 F drive, so I have 924gb in total. Now fatxplorer is showing that I still have 120gb. My Xbox is softmodded. All the posts that have answers to these seem to be from years ago with hard modded Xboxes instead of softmodded. Hence why I came here for help.

Someone please help me. If you have any answers on how to increase this number so it’s not capped at 120gb, I’d be really appreciative.

Help Needed Ok, so for those that know the hardware better than I. No eeprom found

This has been an ongoing thing with an xbox I picked up and have been trying to dump the eeprom on this dead board so I can get the HDD key and dump to XCAT before I use for parts cause nothing I seem to do, brings this board back to life.

My last foray was literally trying to dump the eeprom with a raspberry pi pico via this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOxgQco7XvA
and other tutorials as well as other suggestions from past posts from members in the community. I tapped both into the LPC as well as directly on to the eeprom chip. Both came up with this error in Thony. Anyone have any ideas or is this a dead end and I should just try to get my WD drive unlocked via fatxporer?

Software & Tools GTA San Andreas PS2 Atmosphere mod for the original Xbox (release)

Thumbnail

Earlier this year I bought a modded Xbox, and the first game I booted up was GTA San Andreas. I'd heard it was the best version of the game, but after a few minutes I noticed it was missing the PS2 version characteristic color filter and atmosphere. That pretty much killed my enjoyment.

I tried making a mod back then, but I couldn't get far enough at the time to figure out the Xbox binaries. Fast forward 5 months, and with current AI tools I managed to put this together in about 8 hours.

It brings back the PS2 color filter, radiosity glow, and building lighting, plus improved foliage. You keep the Xbox textures, draw distance, and car reflections. For me, this is now the definitive console version. It just looks great.

Works with both USA versions (Rev 0 and Rev 1). Tested on my Xbox (Cerbios + XBMC4Gamers) with folder/xbe format and xemu. EUR/PAL support is coming later.

Download, instructions and more comparisons

If you try it on your Xbox, let me know how it runs!

Update (v1.2): USA Rev 0 is now supported.

Resolved Is it normal for softmod Xbox to red ring?

14 years ago my oldest bro soft mod his xbox successfully. I recently dissembled, cleaned, replace thermal paste. When I powered on the console, the light was a normal green. However after a minute, it turned solid red. I tested a game and everything worked fine.

XCAT News:

XCAT whisper meme

A bit of general XCAT and XCAT Japan project news.
Andr0 of Team Resurgent sponsored 11 consoles to our man in the ground in Japan, hardly.
On one of the consoles we found some lost content:
Crimson Skies Update 2 for Japan was found!
Soldier of Fortune II: Double Helix all Japan/Asia region DLCs were found!

In previous months this year we found the PAL DLC for SWAT: Global Strike Team, a roster for NBA Basketball 2K4, Mechassault 1 update 2 for Japan, an older update for Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow, Halo 2 update 4 Italian, and more.

All these finds have been shared with Rocky5 for his downloader and with Insignia for easy downloads.
The DLC List, the Title Update List, the Unarchived List, and Pinecone have all been updated today.

All this archival work is only possible because of users like you!
Please support hardly in his XCAT Japan project. Many of the consoles sent to hardly get broken down into parts and sent all over the world to help gamers acorss the globe. If you bought a working DVD drive from HostsServer, it probably came from Japan. Had your console repaired on OGXstore.com ? parts may have came from an XCAT Japan project purchase.

Even if you can't support hardly, you can support the preservation of the history of Xbox Live for Original Xbox for future generations simply by running XCAT on every stock hard drive you can get your hands on. If you cloned your stock HDD that housed Xbox Live content to a new drive, please scan that drive too! We have found lost content on modern SSDs simply because someone copied the contents from the original HDD to it.

In closing, please keep running XCAT and thank all of you for your hard work aiding the preservation of the console we all love!

XboxHD+ without desoldering the AV port

Post image
10 Upvotes

Has anyone tried installing XboxHD+ while keeping the original video output? Do you have any tips on how to do this correctly? I followed the XboxHD+ installation instructions without desoldering anything, and—just to be safe—I didn't install the jumpers on the underside of the video output port. Currently, I have video via HDMI, but not via AV. What could the problem be?

Softmodding Instructions

What's the current instructions for softmodding an Xbox? I saw a video on YouTube but it was over a year old and I don't know if the instructions still apply, the video also didn't go over replacing the hard drive. I found the Rocky5 GitHub, but I didn't see any instructions on there. I searched on here as well and couldn't find any real instructions. Is there a site where I can see instructions on how to get this done? Sorry if this has been asked and answered, like I said I tried searching but I couldn't find anything.

Software & Tools I reverse-engineered the original Xbox boot animation from a retail BIOS dump - and built an interactive web version

Thumbnail

I’ve been working on this project over the past few weeks, and I’m releasing it today!

The goal was to recreate the original Xbox boot animation as faithfully as possible, using only a retail BIOS dump. No original source code. Along the way, I also wanted to document how the animation works internally and break down the different components that make up the experience.

The result is xbox-boot-re: a reverse-engineering project accompanied by an interactive web version that lets you explore the boot sequence yourself.

You can:

  • Watch the animation step by step and slow it down to inspect individual details.
  • Break the sequence down into its individual components.
  • Experiment with the animation and explore how the different elements fit together.
  • Investigate how the iconic Xbox boot sound is constructed.

A note on AI: Claude Opus did most of the heavy lifting on the reverse engineering and implementation. I guided the process, iterated on the results, and worked toward the goal of faithfully reconstructing the original boot sequence and making its inner workings accessible. I want to be transparent about the role AI played in this project rather than present it as entirely manual reverse engineering.

The project is open source, and I’d love to hear what you think - especially from people familiar with the original Xbox hardware, BIOS, or boot process. If you spot anything that could be more accurate, or have insights into how the original implementation worked, feedback and contributions are very welcome.

So I wanted to try some Halo LAN today, the problem was, I only had Halo on my 1.6 and couldn't find the disc.

So I found my crossover cable grabbed my modded 1.2 Xbox and connected both Xbox with the cable.
I've setup a static network address and found the 1.6 Xbox through the FTP on my 1.2, with the copy command I've copied Halo from the 1.6 to the 1.2.

Now I can finally play Halo on two TV's.
