Recommendation/Review Free things to do in OKC

I compiled a document focused on free community meetups (free things you can do while meeting people)

for that reason, I havent included many (if any) solo free things to do (such as going to parks or libraries) since this list is supposed to be community-building-oriented

uf you have things to add please lmk and I will get to it when I can!

The list is long so it is in Docs form

❓Q&A ✅ What is with the helicopters at Integris lately?

People commonly ask about helicopters here, but I live near Integris and I swear those helicopters are running night and day. I hear them starting at 6-7am to well past 11pm, and plenty in between.

I feel like I've noticed it around this time of year before. Anyone know if they're training or something? The helicopter traffic has just been super high lately.

Recommendation/Review Apartment cleaning recs?

I am curious if there is anyone reputable that can clean my apartment? I am struggling a little bit. It’s a 1BR1BA around 800 sq ft. I have two large dogs that will either be crated or out of the apartment if I can help it. I just need help. It’s really mostly dog hair. I haven’t been able to buy a vacuum for the carpet in my bedroom. I just feel overwhelmed looking at the mess. Hoping $100 seems reasonable.

I used to buy Rebel ice cream at Walmart and target in Edmond, and now neither place has it. Does anyone know where I can find some (preferably in Edmond)?

Thanks

❓Q&A ✅ What even is this?

This thing shows up on the map when I go somewhere in this area. What is it? I would be nosy and go up to see for myself, but there is a fence around it. Is it just a giant basin to collect rainwater or is it a dejected pool? Maybe it’s where they spawn our lizard overlords? The world may never know, but I want to know. So, what is it/what hilariously bad answers do y’all have?

Recommendation/Review local bike shop for kids helmets

need a couple cool/colorful helmets for kids ages 4-8. There are plenty of options on Amazon/Target/etc, but I'd rather support a good local bike shop if I can. Hit me with any suggestions please!

Animal Welfare 🐶🐱🐸 Female dog I’m trying to help get off the streets.

Post image
69 Upvotes

Hey guys! I’ve been trying to get this female dog off the streets of Moore and now Okc for over a week! We believe she may have been dumped at the Burger King in Moore over a week ago. I sat with her for hours trying to gain her trust with no luck, then the storms came in and she left our area and has now been spotted in OKC around 25th and walker. If you see her you can message me directly or possibly try to lure her into your car. (I’ve read cat food works well cause it’s stinkier than dog food) We think she likes children better than adults. Anyways please keep an eye out! Thank you! 🩷

This happened earlier tonight, I hope everyone is okay! They have the train stopped and are working to get the car off the tracks. The train is blocking the Britton intersection with a lot of police.

🚗 Streets of OKC 🚧 Please learn “right of way.”

Happened again today. Someone insisted I turn (blind) when they had the right of way. Then they got upset (cussed at me) when I wouldn’t do it. Some people here get angry when you don’t “go” when you do not have the right of way, or when you don’t run a red light or run a stop sign. Speeding is another example.

Ridiculous! So much embarrassingly backward thinking. It’s dangerous and dumb. So please, just go when it’s your turn and all will be good. Rant over.

Animal Welfare 🐶🐱🐸 Missing cat!!! Please help

Edit: Mister is back home and safe now at almost 4am but he’s back nonetheless and I’m eternally grateful

My cat is missing! His name is Mister Nice Guy. He went missing from my home at the Vintage Apartments off of 23rd and Penn. He’s microchipped but I think it’s still registered to the rescue who I adopted from, Nexus Pets. He’s an indoor cat, but he must’ve gotten out the indoor by squeezing out. He’s black and white with green eyes. There’s a few white hairs in the black when you look close. He has very big whiskers. Loves treats. He’s typically very vocal. I know it’s unlikely someone will know to take him to a vet because there’s a lot of strays here, but if anyone is nearby and can look, please let me know. I’m worried and idk when in the night he could’ve gotten out.

🚗 Streets of OKC 🚧 Can we just take a moment and appreciate the fact how most street layouts of cities and towns in Oklahoma are grid shaped?

Unlike many other states such as Texas and Arkansas that have the street layouts of many of their cities and towns all over the place, Oklahoma has a grid layout that rounds east-west and north-south with the major streets being one mile apart from each other, making it easier to get from one place to another. Especially here in OKC, where most of the west-east streets are numbered, and even more so when the major west-east streets are ran in increments of 13, 14, or 15. And Main St. and Santa Fe Ave. serve as the dividing lines between west-east and north-south, respectively.

🚗 Streets of OKC 🚧 Possible Witness to Car Accident

I know this is a long shot (and a long-ish post), but I’m posting in hopes of helping my mom out. She was in a car accident yesterday (Tues. Oct. 20th), approx 1:15pm, on NW Expressway. She said it happened near the area where the Asian Buffet and Sherwin Williams are located (between MacArthur and Meridian, but closer to MacArthur). She was in the middle lane and a vehicle that was passing her in the right lane started moving over into her lane, hitting the front passenger side/bumper area — and knocked her into a vehicle directly beside her in the left lane.

Thankfully she’s not hurt, and her vehicle is still drivable - but the person who hit her sped off. A super kind person who witnessed the accident continued to follow the driver long enough to get the license plate info, and drove back to where my mom was, to share with her. So very thoughtful! Unfortunately in the stress and chaos of the moment, my mom didn’t think to get this kind person’s name and phone number before they drove away.

My mom of course called the police and her insurance, shared all info with them, and they’re looking into it (will ask businesses for possible footage of the accident, attempt to find the driver, etc), but it would be fantastic to also have a witness statement. If you are the individual who gave my mom the plate number.. or if you’re someone else who happened to witness the accident, please respond here or send me a direct message! Again, I realize it’s a long shot, but I had to try. Thanks!

Camera caught 2 foxes last night near my chicken coop. I have seen possums, raccoons, but never foxes. Is this common in OKC? Not in a rural area.

Recommendation/Review Free mulch from local tree services. Who knew?

Had a couple of tree services out yesterday to give me quotes, and both mentioned that there are websites where you can sign up to have local tree services drop off their wood chips for free instead of hauling them to the dump. One is getchipdrop.com, but there are others too. It’s all natural, untreated wood chips that are great for mulching flower beds.

The only catch is they typically drop off an entire truckload, which can be around 20 cubic yards. I only need about 3. 😂 So unless I want to bury my entire yard in mulch, I don’t think that’s going to work for me. But I figured I’d share in case anyone else could use it.

And if anyone around OKC ends up getting a truckload and wants to spare about 3 cubic yards, let me know! Haha.
