The Nottingham Guide - Things to do, independent food, what's on, where to move, how to make friends (New for 2026)

Hey up! I love this city and am proud to have made it my home. This is a community updated guide to Nottingham, based on my own favourites and lots of suggestions from r/Nottingham.

This is not comprehensive, but it should be a helpful starting point if you’re visiting, moving here, studying here, or just trying to get out of your usual routine.

Please comment with anything missing, closed, outdated, misspelled or controversial.

Things to Do in Nottingham

Free

  • Walk around the city looking at local landmarks: Robin Hood Statue, the Left Lion, Slab Square (Market Square), Sky Mirror, Nottingham’s historic lace buildings, the Long Stairs, the Park Tunnel.
  • Walk through the Arboretum and General Cemetery, then back into town via Derby Road’s independents.
  • Elm Avenue, Corporation Oaks and Robin Hood Chase make a lovely green corridor walk with views across the city.
  • Nottingham Central Library, which often has local history or art exhibitions.
  • Green Heart Park at the old Broadmarsh site, including the lace worker statues from the lace and Cotton growers from the wind rush generation
  • Nottingham Contemporary.
  • Stonebridge City Farm.
  • Sneinton Market and Hockley for independent shops, street art and people watching.
  • Canal walk to Beeston Lock, with the option to continue to Attenborough Nature Reserve and get the train back.

Mostly Free, But Check First

  • Green’s Windmill and Science Centre. The mill is currently under repair until around November 2026, but the site may still be open.
  • Wollaton Hall and Deer Park. The park itself is still a good visit, but check current charges before going as access and parking arrangements can change.

Paid

  • Nottingham Castle - it's around £18 per adult but this is a yearly entry and it does have a nice green space to sit in
  • Mortimer’s Hole tour at Nottingham Castle
  • Wollaton Hall and the Industrial Museum.
  • National Justice Museum.

Packers Place, Nottingham.

Post image
• Upvotes

Packers Place alley, looking towards Mansfield Road. (2014). On the wall can be seen part of the pub's title that stood on the left in the 1920s. That was the Dog and Gun Inn. The alley (and there are others) connected Mansfield Road with N Sherwood Street, so the Inn's name was visible front and back. Today (Oct 2026) the site where the Inn once stood (number 207) is occupied by "The Open Kitchen, Free Hot Food For Those In Need".

Join the Nottingham TTRPG group!

Calling all folks interested in playing tabletop roleplaying games!

The Nottingham RPG group has been running since 2022, to give folks an opportunity to try playing and running different TTRPGs, and meet new folks with the same nerdy interests.

We run all sorts of different RPGs at local game stores in Nottingham, and we also have a weekly board game social at the Dice Cup. We've run dozens of different systems, from big names like D&D, Vampire the Masquerade, Daggerheart, Shadowdark, Call of Cthulu, etc. to playtests of brand new games from local companies like Doomsong, and light-hearted goofy systems like Crash Pandas and One Honk Before Midnight.

I've made some great friends and played a ton of different systems through this group, and even met folks who I'm now playing a weekly home campaign with. We're an inclusive group and we have members of a range of different ages and genders with a big LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent contingent. No experience playing RPGs required, beginners are more than welcome.

After the original founder of the group is now taking a well-earned retirement from organising the group, we've created a shiny new discord server that we'll use it to sign up for games from November. Sign ups for next month's games will go up next Wednesday.

Drop a comment or a message and I'll send you the link to the server. If you have any questions, feel free to message me 😊

Stop dumping in other people's bins

I've had this issue a few times now. I live in Beeston, moved here a few months ago. Did a lot of research and I love the area, it's close to places like Wollaton and Highfields. Aside from the absolutely atrocious littering issue, can people stop dumping their shit in my dustbin? I do not pay council tax for strangers to bin their UNBAGGED DOG SHIT, takeaway rubbish and raw chicken. Please, give a damn about your neighbours and grow up. You should be ashamed whoever you are.

Ive had to move my bins deeper in my property in order to avoid this issue, but even today after the bin men came and did their jobs and I was at work, someone threw their raw, opened chicken in there. If you're not happy with a purchase, rake it back to the shop and stop being damn lazy.

Clean up after yourselves folks, the earth has even shit in it already we can at least try and look after our environment and community where we can. Not to mention it's a great waste of an animals life to die just to end up untouched in my bin.

Nottinghamshire County Council proposing to remove travel funding for SEND pupils post-16. Parents of SEND children need to read this, or if you are SEND yourself at a specialist provision and get transport.

Nottinghamshire County Council are proposing to cut school transport provision for SEND children post-16 and make parents pay, in an effort to save £400k a year.

SEND children are some of the most vulnerable in society, and anyone who knows even vaguely about the issue, knows that SEND school places are at a premium, and often miles away from where the children live. Parents don't choose to send their children to schools miles away, it's the only schools suitable for their kids to access education.

Let's remember that it's illegal to not be in education or full-time training until 18.

How many parents can afford £800 a year to send their kids to school, often when they've had to spend thousands to take the council to tribunal to simply get their kids in those schools to begin with.

This is disability discrimination against some of the most vulnerable in society.

Nottingham. Demolition in the Meadows.

Post image
16 Upvotes

The Arts & Crafts Cricket Pavilion, opened 1906. It stood on the New Meadows Recreation Ground within The Meadows area of Nottingham, and incorporated more than one football pitch. Some speculate that it was allowed to rot into disrepair until its demolition in 2025. The "Arts & Crafts" part of its title refers to the beautiful style of architecture it featured in its younger days.

Note: I didn't take this photo from Google, they took it from me, and I'm happy with that.

25M nerdy guy for mates

Hey. Looking to make some friendships with like minded people. I'm into music, gaming, dark humour and blowing your brain up with existential facts.

Talk to me for five seconds and I will bring up Doctor Who or DND a dozen times.

Castle and caves!

Can anyone tell me if it's worth doing the Nottingham Castle Dungeon Tour and also if the Castle Caves is better than the City Of Caves?

I'm trying to work out which ones are good value for money and if doing one makes the other redundant?

Garage recommendations for car ABS/electrical faults

Can anyone recommend a garage that deals with ABS/electrical faults beyond getting the fault codes as there's multiple and needs deeper investigation. Last one I took it to want to send the ABS pump off but can't do it for a week and struggling to get a booking anytime soon.

Hi! A friend of mine hosts Weeknd themed events all over the UK, think all weeknd hits, stargirls serving drinks, games and merch. Just wondering if Nottingham would be a good place to host? Are there many XO there? They've been really popular in London and Manchester so far

Can anyone recommend a personal trainer that has their own private space, rather than using a public gym?

Hi, I'm looking to start some sessions with a PT, but I would much prefer meeting 1:1 in a private space rather than meeting them in a public gym, at least to begin with. I am very self conscious and even putting myself out there makes me anxious, but I hope to work on this over time and build up to going to a normal public gym. If anyone has any recommendations I'd appreciate it a lot, thanks!
