Cats of Norwich

I recall a post about the cats of Norwich. Someone was researching them in their local area. They posted a little while ago. Not about missing cats but studying them.

Asking for a friend.

Wensum sewage overflow

It’s been like this all week, not just new mills yard but multiple CSO’s throughout the city, but the giant fish kill a few weeks ago was down to the heat wave 🤔. Funny how the fish kill only effected one stretch of the river

Thank you Anglian water

Is there a lot of low quality coke in Norwich at the moment?

• Upvotes

Got stuck next to a table of classic coke head men last night in a pub that were having a degree of fun several magnitudes over anyone else there. The whole running off to the loo to do lines every 5 minutes and slamming the table shenanigans. Fair enough, we moved on somewhere else.

10 minutes later theres a topless guy on gentleman's walk doing the classic blizzard berserker march up to random people and slapping them with his belt with the immortal lines of "do you want some". I suspect they were not in need of an extra belts at the time despite his many offers.

What the fuck has happened to Norwich? It wasn't even late! It was maybe 19:30.

UEA Sportspark

• Upvotes

Moved near to the area and the UEA Sportspark is my nearest gym. Used other 24hr gyms in the city/local community gyms before for comparison. Disappointing experience off the bat at UEA for the cost of the Silver membership...

Firstly, one or two pros. I go off-peak times so found mornings on weekends, and early morning/lunchtime during the week was fine. Nearly always a rack free for weight training so never had an issue with crowdedness/busy times. Access to pool and track are nice, cafe is fine.

But cons outweigh that. Price is higher than mostly everywhere else other than David Lloyds/Bannatynes, without any corresponding luxury. Not value for money, unless you're a student that wants convenience. If you plan on swimming daily, alongside the gym and track, it might make sense. For the gym alone though, not great.

Gym layout is awkward with low ceilings (why have racks with pull up bars when you can't complete a pull up without smashing your head through the ceiling?). The upstairs area is closed off most of the time except for classes, so massive waste of useful space for any functional fitness/yoga training etc. Staff will tell you off if you use the space, even though they sell it as a highlight during induction.

Awkward opening/close times. For the money, it should be 24hr, or at least open earlier/shut later.

No bags allowed, which I understand if people are bringing suitcases/massive backpacks, but even small tote bags aren't allowed (so you end up with belts, straps, bottles, garments dumped on the floor instead). If trip hazards are a concern, the no-bags rule isn't helping that. Small nearby lockers would help massively. Probably a hangover from Covid.

Staff are either uninterested or on a mission to tell off members for putting their possessions down, or for using certain spaces. More keen to push unhelpful rules than help members.

Equipment is pretty dire/out of date. Benches are wobbly and weak, and feel like an accident waiting to happen. Treadmills are unreliable with their feeds/software. All feels 10-20yr out of date. Sportspark could benefit from some decent investment in new equipment, revising their rules and opening up more spaces for members.

For now, I'm cancelling and travelling a bit further afield for something more modern/convenient. If I ever need the pool or track, it works out better to pay on the door.

Yesterday I complained about councillors spending far too much time falling out and fighting culture wars. So it's only fair to point out that one of them, at least, seems to be quietly doing something about local problems people really care about.

Bravo

Would anyone like to start a cannon club?

There were a lot of people who were interested in firing a black powder cannon in my last post, I was wondering if people would be down to start like a cannon club kinda thing and we can work towards getting a cannon set up and fire it? Also just talking about cannons and stuff? Can split the cost of getting a cannon and stuff so we can all say we own a cannon

Edit: we now have a WhatsApp group!!

Here’s the link to the group!

I joined and subsequently left that sub after some confusion and misunderstandings. I was on a wild goose chase looking for Virginia Beach on a map of east Anglia.

Apparently there's a Norfolk somewhere in the US. Nothing to do with us.

I expect other people have done the same.

Question❓ Mid-Day or Evening Drawing Classes?

Hi all!
I was wondering if there are any drawing classes that are available to join preferably in the afternoon or evenings? Something akin to say an evening language class but for drawing.
I’ve been trying to learn myself for a while but find the lack of feedback and structure a little difficult to deal with.
If possible I have a preference for figure drawing and landscapes and not really any interest in painting, pastel etc.

Thanks you in advance!

Is it too much to ask for local councillors to get on with the job they were elected to rather than picking fights with everyone including their own party colleagues?

Question❓ Vintage audio repair?

Hey all :)

Can anyone recommend anywhere / anyone in Norwich who may be able to take a look at my Walkman for me?

It’s been stored for a couple of years now and in that time something in the tape deck seems to have perished, got stuck or isn’t moving as it should and oh my god, the shriek that comes out of it when I try to play a tape is hideous. I think I’ve damaged my ear drums 😂

Many thanks 💜

Pub Recs for old gits who like music

We're coming to Norwich next weekend for a gig at UEA and staying on 23rd and 24th October.

We're a group of late 50's gents who love our live music, festivals, camping (refusing to grow old) types.

Any recommendations for pub bands on the Friday evening?

There's not much coming up via online searches and not all pubs have an online presence so looking for any recommendations.

We are staying near UEA but happy to travel.

Thanks all.

Question❓ Where to advertise LGBT fundraisers in the city

I have an fundraiser going and want to get some leaflets up around the city. Does anyone know any LGBT friendly spots that would let me put it up (it is an LGBT-related fundraiser) that would get a bit of traffic?

Any groups around that shoot cannons?

I really like Napoleonic artillery and were wondering if there were any groups around that shoot blackpowder cannons from that era? I haven't been able to find any on google but I was wondering if anyone knows of any? I just really like cannons lol

Interested to know people's thoughts on this!

. S

This is Martha Goddard. She is from Norwich, and she was arrested almost exactly a year ago. She was charged with terrorism offenses in July this year, most of these were linked to a series of arson attacks on companies in Norwich (BBC, StarBucks etc). But she has also been charged with making explosives with the intent to harm or endanger human life.

These attacks were in the name of Palestine, and were a mini protest in her mind. She was also charged with biking to the Tackelneston communications tower to use thermite to burn it down. There was not enough evidence to suggest that it was her that did this, despite there being CCTV footage and a confession letter and Thermite found in her home. This would have been her biggest charge, so it's likely that this is going to lighten her sentencing significantly.

She is being sentenced tomorrow, at Woolwich Crown Court. This is the main court for terrorism, murder and rape in the UK. It's pretty serious! There are five people also being sentenced tomorrow for protesting for Palestine Action.

So, what are people's thoughts on this? Do you know much about the case? Is this new to you? Do you think this could be a big case that will spread in the news tomorrow? Do you agree or disagree with it? I'm just intrigued, because this sort of thing doesn't really happen in Norwich, we are a quiet and chilled little slice of the UK. Very rare that we have such a high profile case.

Has anyone used any local companies for air con installation that they could recommend please?

I’d prefer to not use a big national company if I can avoid it.
