the heartland flyer
took my first trip last week. a day trip to have lunch in ft worth for funsies. maybe i am a simple to please creature, but the experience lands in my top ten. what a relaxing way to travel. we went on a wednesday under the assumption of an empty train. wrong. the conducter kindly moved a couple folks around so my partner and i could sit together. he was gracious all the way around and attentive. the cafe dj? was he previously a dj? did he miss his calling? the blueberry muffins slapped. the microwave sausage biscuit was sad as hell, but in line with microwave. the scenery.... i think i have never seen the washita river. she was beautiful with the rains. i was so caught up in the scenery, it never occurred to me to take pics or videos. the rocking and swaying of the train was nice. that being said, it is obvious when they switch engineers, bc they each seem to drive different.
downtown ft worth? sheeeeesh. a mix of old and new. the old santa fe depot is an extension of a university, but old brickwork and iron stands strong. the skyscrapers were dizzying and reflected the clouds and sky.
if anyone is going soon and needs a restaurant suggestion, the Little Red Wasp knocked my not city-slicker socks off. small menu that they have locked in. i got the spicy chicken sandwich on potato roll. knife and fork required. every bite hit every note perfectly.
i paid $27 each for the tickets and that is insanely cheap compared to gas. if anyone needs to touch the proverbial grass and disconnect, may i recommend the heartland flyer? i wish i could wax poetically, because i believe it is well deserved. i have never wanted commuter rail more in my life. i would train everywhere. we need inner city rails in oklahoma!
