Life in NL Where to buy car tyres in the Netherlands?

Hi everyone,

Local garages like Profile are quoting around €1,200 for all-season tyres, while online shops like BandenConcurrent and BandenLeader offer them for almost half the price, including fitting at partner garages.

Has anyone bought tyres online? Is the quality of fitting and after-sales service good? Any recommendations for reliable and affordable options?

Thanks!

Discussion Beginner in Rijswijk (South Holland) looking for a crossbow club or instructor, English OK?

Hey everyone!

I'm a complete beginner and I just bought my first crossbow, an EK Archery JAG 1 Standard (150 lbs recurve).

Obviously doing my own search but thought I'll ask here. I'm looking for:

A club or range in South Holland, or nearby, where I can shoot regularly

An instructor, or an experienced member, who could give me a lesson or two

Ideally somewhere that welcomes beginners and where English works

If you know a club (NKB or otherwise), a friendly range, or a coach, I'd really appreciate a pointer. I'm happy to pay for a lesson or a trial session. Thanks in advance!

Common Question/Topic What is the philosophy and principles behind the system of youth care Netherlands?

https://nos.nl/nieuwsuur/artikel/2635972-minister-wil-plaatsing-jongeren-spaans-huis-met-extreme-methode-niet-onderzoeken

I have been reading news articles around this and it made me wonder.

Just a random search on google shows almost all youth care and such facilities are rated extremely poor with very sad reviews. Despite all of this millions of € are spend on taking children away from their parents and given to foster care and correction facilities and youth care.

When did such a system start?

What is the jurist prudence of youth care system?

Why is it often that officials cover up and decline investigating the people responsible and atrocities covered by youth care?

When parents take away children they are recommended treatment https://nltimes.nl/2026/06/18/dalfsen-biological-parents-convicted-abducting-children-triggering-amber-alert

What does court prescribe for these officials who put children in Spain?

Personal Finance Non-resident tax return for 2021.

I lived in the Netherlands for several years, left to work overseas (outside the EU) and rented out my property. I never received an income tax request from the Belastingdienst since then, and have check online and do not see any request for an assessment.

Partly because of not having access to a DigiD (there was a period when you had to have a Dutch mobile number to retain access, though that has since been updated), partly through laziness, I never did a tax return. I realise this was a poor decision and I will pay interest on anything I owe.

A quick chat with ChatGPT tells me that the Belastingdienst has 5 years to get NL-sourced tax from me, and if they don't request the tax in this five year period (so before the end of 2026 for 2021 taxes), then they can no longer request it. Can this really be true?

To be clear, I'm intending to file a tax return and imagine that before the 5 year window closes, they will run some checks (and see rental income coming into my Dutch bank account), but is it really so simple that if I were to wait a few more months, I don;t need to pay? Surely this is a loophole that the Belastingdienst looks into?

Can anyone confirm or correct this?

Thanks

Life in NL Suited coats

Hello! I came here for university, and I will receive my clothes for cold weather from home very soon. How good is a wool long coat for this season? I know it rains quite a bit and I never had to deal with this, so back home I just wear a wool coat and I’m fine.

Do I need to buy another jacket/ coat or will I be ok with that? I have another “normal” short jacket, but I usually do not wear it that often.

Thank you in advance for your advice!

Employment Pip , burnout and return

Was put on a pip and had a complete burnout managing it and recovered and came back. Decided to work the pip out in the firm and do the job but I shot myself in the foot by going back.

Management told me in the first meeting, to take a payout and to get a deal with HR and move on as the pip will be unsuccessful. I was so blindsided as I trusted the firm and was very open with my sickness and even my recovery , trusted my coach and told him a lot of my personal struggles.

My friends told me to call in sick again to buy time and look for a new job but I don’t want to as I don’t actually feel sick and really wanted to work again. And I need might need a reference for my next employer.

I am not sure what to do at the moment I am so tired mentally now making me rethink everything. It’s a sponsored visa work also. I don’t want to leave a trail of sick leave and they already gave me a timeline when this firing will happen .

Employment Need advice on how to find a job

Dutch people and fellow immigrants in the Netherlands: how to find a job that requires only English, preferably remote?

I've been applying on indeed, but which are the other reliable websites/agencies/idk?

I study Dutch, but it's not a short journey until I'm able to use it for work.

My work experience is all over the place: graphic designer, production artist, English teacher, teacher of Ukrainian for foreigners, machine operator, engraver.

I need to find a job that is not physically hard like machine operating or warehouse works, I am autistic and have some physical limitations.

I've been really struggling with it.

Any tips are VERY welcomed.

I am located between Utrecht and Arnhem, if that's relevant.

Travel and Tourism Need help to visit

Hello everyone,
I am a 24-year-old student currently living in the UK, and I will be visiting Amsterdam on 28th October for sightseeing and exploring the city.
It would be wonderful to connect with someone who could kindly show me around or recommend some of the best places to visit. I would really appreciate the opportunity to meet new people, learn more about Amsterdam, and experience the city from a local’s perspective.
If anyone is available to help or join me for a short tour, I would be truly grateful.
Thank you in advance for your kindness and support!

Employment Job interview dilemma

Dear community,

I am from a nonEU background working in an international company which I am not fond of working for anymore.

I work in an IT position

I recently applied for a position in another company since their recruiter reached out to me. It is a completely Dutch company that wants to expand in Europe and is therefore also looking for non Dutch speaking candidates.

I would be the first non Dutch person in this company.

The first round went very good, I understood the job and expectations.

For the second round they sent me a case study to present to understand how I think.

I had a very long discussion and my impression was that it went very well since I didn't face any questions that I couldn't answer.

Here comes the surprise -

Hr called me today to inform that although it was a good discussion, the CTO is not convinced that I am assertive enough for the position. He thinks I'll be good at doing things myself but not at getting others to do it.

HR asked for my views on it. I replied that I don't identify that as a valid assessment since that is what I literally do.

I thought that is rejection but they invited me for a 3rd final round of interview.

Questions -

  1. I don't understand if it's normal here to invite someone for additional rounds if you have a perception like that?

  2. Are they looking for me to clarify on that further?

  3. What do you think? Should I consider this company?(If they consider me) Or is it a bit of a red flag and I will be under a lens all the time?

I have a permanent contract in my current position so I am not desperate but want to leave since the work is better in the company I applied for.

Thanks!

Discussion Queer expression versus career progression: am I overthinking an earring?

This might sound strange, but I’m a cis gay man who generally comes across as straight. My career is going really well, I’m ambitious, and I want to move into leadership.

I’ve been thinking about getting an earring. A tiny decision, except I keep wondering whether looking more visibly queer could affect how seriously people take me professionally. And i know im getting progressed now more easily as i look "normal"

I keep coming back to that stereotypical “CEO Peter” image: the conventional-looking man people automatically see as leadership material. I don’t think most colleagues would consciously decide that an earring makes someone a worse leader. My concern is the unconscious association: who looks authoritative, who seems like a natural fit, who gets pictured in the next senior role.

And yes, this is the Netherlands. People are accepting, but I’m not convinced that acceptance always translates into equal opportunities once you stop fitting the expected image.

I’ve put effort into building my career and taking the right steps to progress. Part of me thinks I should establish myself further before experimenting with how I present myself. Another part wonders whether there will always be another promotion that makes me postpone it.

Has anyone here become more visibly queer or less conventional in their appearance while moving into management? Did it affect how people treated you?

I know an earring shouldn’t matter. I’m interested in whether, in practice, it does.

Personal Finance I need help

Hi guys, it took a lot for me to post this. I am Dutch and working my ass off, living alone in an apartment in the north, and I am so far in financial debt. The reason I’m posting this is because this morning, I also got scammed out of €500, and won’t be able to pay my rent anymore this month. The reason why is a long story, but I thought it would get me more money so I would’ve been able to pay off my debts. Stupid.

As I said, I work full time, and I don’t spend much. Usually I can get by, but since I live alone again (break-up 5 months ago), things have been hard. The bills have been piling up. Recently I even started selling nudes so I could have some more money. It doesn’t feel good but I don’t know what else to do.

I sell stuff on Vinted & Marktplaats too, as much as I can. I plan my groceries and get them at Lidl. I really don’t know what to do. I get huurtoeslag & zorgtoeslag. I’m looking to move as well.

I’m so desperate at the moment. I’m left with nothing after this morning. I have no savings account, I don’t know how people get by.

Any advice and help would be appreciated.
