Nebraska I compared Nebraska football results with the three major statewide elected officials (Governor and the two United States Senators) for every year since 1890. The results are fascinating. Vote accordingly November 3!

Building on this post, I did a data deep dive into the history of Nebraska politics compared to the history of Nebraska football. The results tell a compelling story. Major findings of this research:

  1. Of the Huskers’ five national championships, only the very first, from the 1970 season, was achieved with all three positions being held by Republicans. And for that season, the culminating Orange Bowl, played on Jan. 1, 1971, occurred with a Democrat already elected governor. J. James Exon would take office a week later, Jan. 7, 1971.
    1. Exon would remain governor throughout the ‘70s, including during the legendary 1971 team’s unbeaten season.
  2. The glory days of the 1990s for Husker football occurred in the vast majority with all three elected positions being held by Democrats.
    1. The two national championships in 1994 and 1995 happened under this trifecta.
    2. The fifth and to-date last Husker natty, from the 1997 season, happened with the governor’s mansion and the Senate 1 seat held by Democrats. The Senate 2 seat had been won a year earlier by Chuck Hagel, who eventually became President Obama’s Secretary of Defense, so I wouldn’t call him some ruby-red Republican, either.
  3. The Huskers’ last appearance in a conference championship game was of course the gross blowout by Wisconsin in 2012. That year also happened to be the last where any of the three positions was held by a Democrat, as Ben Nelson retired from the Senate.
    1. So in the past fourteen years, every one of which has seen a Republican trifecta, not once have the Huskers even reached a conference championship game.
  4. Going way back in history, the Huskers’ first football season was in 1890. Before then, since Nebraska became a state in 1867, the Republicans had a trifecta of governor and the two senators. The first few seasons had some mixed results with low game counts, and it wasn’t until 1894 that the Huskers won their first conference championship—but only after electing William V. Allen, a Populist (!) the year before to the Senate.
    1. During Allen’s term the Husker would win two more conference championships, including in 1895 and 1897 when we had a governor representing the Democratic and Populist parties (in what was called a “fusion” ticket) as well, Silas A. Holcomb.
  5. Overall, in the 136 years of Nebraska football, including this year's partially-completed 137th season:
    1. 50 years of Republican trifecta → 5 conference titles (10% of the time), 1 national title (2% of the time), 54.3% games won
    2. 14 years of Democrat (including Populist/Fusion/Independent) trifecta → 9 conference (64% of the time), 2 national (14% of the time), 83.9% (!) games won
    3. 73 years of split control (at least one position held by each party) → 32 conference (44% of the time), 2 national (3% of the time), 73.9% games won
  6. More stats, including wins, losses, bowl wins, bowl losses, bowl win percentage, and “bowl reach percentage” (i.e. how often did we play in a bowl game) for each of the three elected position possibilities:
Status Wins Losses Winning Percentage Bowl Wins Bowl Losses Bowl Win % Bowl Reach %
R trifecta 264 222 54.32% 5 4 55.56% 18.00%
D trifecta 130 25 83.87% 5 6 45.45% 78.57%
Split 542 191 73.94% 17 18 48.57% 47.95%

The final point I’ll make is that these results are not merely coincidental. There is a real, tangible relationship between the leaders of this state and its flagship university, including the resources and success of the football team. As a lifelong Nebraskan, I’m a fan of this state—the people, the university, and the team, and I want our elected officials to lead us to prosperity in every way, on and off the field. Both the long-term and recent trends suggest that Republican trifectas have been the least effective at doing this. And on Nov. 3, we have not one but two of those three major positions up for election. Vote accordingly!

The full dataset and analysis is here.

If there ever was a guy to listen to when he speaks in Nebraska its been Mike Foley as the Sate Auditor. This man has done his job well and has always been quick to call out the BS that goes on with our tax payer money. I was never a fan that he aligned himself with Pete Ricketts, but if your from Nebraska his opinions on matters are worth considering when it comes to state money.

Rode from O’Neal to Valentine. Only seen 4 other cyclists in the two days on the trail. Shout out to the central bar in Stuart. Best food and hospitality on the trip, and only place that wasn’t playing Fox News. Some beautiful sights on a long trail.

Politics Hate to admit it, but AI has made voting research easier than ever on supposedly nonpartisan candidates

With so many nonpartisan tickets, there are a lot of choices out there.

I'm voting early tomorrow, and wanted to look into a sample ballot, research the candidates now rather than in the booth. As much as I despise the more notorious parts of AI, and think the industry should be heavily regulated, Google's AI mode can be a decent summary of candidates.

For a lot of candidates the data is limited, but there are a few highlights. Full disclosure: I've never heard of any of these people until minutes ago.

-Since you won't find Nebraska judges that weren't appointed by Republicans, I tend to be more favorable to the older ones, and less interested in recent ones returning.

Examples I found:

-Judge Block issued a judgment against Oath Keepers.

-Bellevue Mayoral Candidate Pflager advocates for work self-worth and unionization

-Bellevue Public Schools Board Member Candidate Michele Bang was a cop for 29 years, got an OPD Ribbon of Excellence, oversaw units covering domestic violence and crimes against children. She retired then became Deputy Director for Project Harmony. That right there sounds like someone who cares.

Yeah, for some candidates you can and probably should dig into them more (I also searched for their names on this subreddit). But maybe a quick glance can make a difference in our state.

Nebraska Jim Pillen banned zero trans women from girls locker rooms

Because there was zero trans women playing women’s sports in the state of Nebraska.

He “solved” a “problem” that literally didn’t exist anywhere in the entire state, and this is apparently the big accomplishment of his previous term. Because he played football. Or something.

I guess this is great if he can get you to vote for him for that and forget that he spent all our money and the state is broke.

I was driving through Beatrice for work and noticed a sign supporting a local team at “State”. I believe I have seen a decorated car somewhere near Lincoln as well. My question is, what sport is competing for State this early?

In September’s round of budget requests submitted to the State Budget Division, the State Fire Marshal’s office said it would have to resort to cutting staff positions, again, and reducing training programs if it faced 8% budget reductions.

Lincoln Wedding Venues

PSA to all Nebraska wedding couples: Country Pines in Lincoln is a beautiful venue, BUT: if you’d like a welcoming, happy, low stress environment for not only YOU but also your vendors…don’t.

Power tripping snarky owners. Rude to vendors, rude to your wedding party. There’s so many wonderful venues in the area. If country pines is on your list, keep looking.

Nebraska Have you had to prove you meet Medicaid work requirements? Or lost coverage?

Hi everyone, my name is Arielle Zionts, I'm a rural healthcare reporter at KFF Health News, a national, nonprofit media outlet focused on in-depth healthcare reporting. I live in Rapid City, SD but travel to and report in Nebraska at times.

I'm looking to interview someone from Nebraska who lost Medicaid coverage due to the new work/community engagement requirement rules OR who kept coverage after having to take steps to prove you meet those requirements.

If you're interested, you can message me on Reddit or email me at [ariellez@kff.org](mailto:ariellez@kff.org).

I won't be using any comments under this post or elsewhere in this group, only info I directly receive from interviews.

Thank you!

Former Nebraska Governor and U.S. Senator Bob Kerrey and Academy Award-nominated actress Debra Winger shared a highly publicized, high-profile romantic relationship during the mid-1980s.

Edit: he was single and it was consensual and I think it was pretty damn cool.

Politics Song for the Ricketts-Osborn race

The other day I heard a new Ricketts radio ad that is a little ditty about Osborn. An attempt at a catchy banjo tune that basically says Dan Osborn is a Democrat. That's the best Ricketts can do at this point I guess.

Anywhoo....I got to thinking that we really need a tune for the campaign to express our hopes for the outcome. This is what I came up with, and it goes with the melody for "Living On a Prayer."

I do not own the rights to the song, in case you were wondering.

Ricketts never worked on the docks

His hands are soft and neat

His life has been a treat

It’s true….so true

Ricketts runs to daddy all day

Daddy says to Ricketts just listen, Petey it’s okay, I’ll pay….

He’s got to hold on to what he’s got

Ricketts doesn’t care if you make it or not

He’s got his money, and that’s a lot

For luck….He’ll give it a shot

Oh, we’re halfway there

Oh, oh, Osborn’s got a prayer

We’ll take our votes and we’ll send them out there

Oh, oh Osborns’ got a prayer

Nebraska I'm Dan Osborn, Independent U.S. Senate Candidate for Nebraska. AMA!

EDIT at 4:05 PM:

Hi folks – wow. I'm blown away by your interest here.

It's 4pm, and I'm going to answer a few more questions before I head out to my town hall in South Omaha (would love to see you there!)

I'll try to answer questions submitted by the end of the day while we're on the road for the Sandhills leg of our 93-County Tour over the next few days.

ORIGINAL POST:

Hello, r/Nebraska! Dan Osborn here. I'm running to beat billionaire Pete Ricketts and give Nebraskans the representation they deserve in the U.S. Senate. I'm a lifelong independent, a Navy and Army National Guard veteran, and a mechanic who believes I'll have a better chance of fixing D.C. than a billionaire.

I'm verified with the mods, and I'll be answering questions starting at 3pm Central / 2pm Mountain today, October 14th. Fire away!
