I've been thinking about something in Berserkr that I find a little puzzling, and I'm curious how other people interpret it.
The game has rules for a character's heroic death and what happens to them afterward. That makes sense for a living warrior who dies gloriously in battle. But what about some of the other playable character types?
For example:
Wraiths — can a spirit die a second time? Why his fate isnt decided before? Is it destroyed, released, or sent somewhere else?
Fire constructs — does their death mean their flame goes out, their body is destroyed, or something else entirely?
Valkyries — given their connection to death and the fate of the slain, how does their own heroic death fit into the picture?
I realize that this could simply be a matter of interpreting death more broadly: not necessarily biological death, but the final destruction of a character or the end of their current existence. That's a perfectly reasonable approach, but I'm not sure whether the rules explicitly support it or whether we're expected to figure it out ourselves. For me, it doesnt really make sense.
I'm also wondering whether the heroic death mechanic assumes that every character has a soul, can be judged by the gods, and can potentially end up in the same afterlife - regardless of what they actually are.
Has anyone else noticed this, or discussed it with their group? Is there an official explanation, a passage in the rules I've overlooked, or a house rule you've come up with to handle these character types?
I'm not necessarily saying the mechanic is broken. I'm genuinely curious about how it fits the setting and whether different kinds of characters should have different outcomes when they're defeated for good.
I'd love to hear your interpretations 😅
