Hi, everybody! AI slop is unfortunately creeping into this hobby and this community. This is a quick rules update to clarify that AI is not allowed in any form here on r/minipainting.
This includes, but is not limited to:
If AI was used to make it, it's not allowed on r/minipainting.
While the mod team has been able to remove most AI posts shortly after they are made, on the few occasions AI posts were up for a few hours before removal, the comments on those posts from the community have been overwhelmingly unanimous in being anti-AI, so this isn't just the mod team making this ruling without considering the community.
Please see the pinned comment below for an FAQ on this new rule, and if you have a question that is not answered there, please ask and we will do our best to answer! That being said, this is not an invitation to defend or argue for specific use cases of AI within this hobby.
Edit: Please read the stickied FAQ comment before commenting. There are many people asking things that are covered in that comment.
The comment section has grown quite large, but also please take a moment to scroll through it and read the comments before repeating something that may have already been discussed, or at least join in as a reply to an existing comment rather than make a new top level comment with a similar or identical question.

It’s still difficult for me to get leather texture, any tips?

I painted this Sloven Knight as my first ever attempt at painting for a competition at Scale Model Challenge, and I'm beyond thrilled at scoring a silver medal right away! I'm definitely pushing for gold next year :)
Feedback always welcome!

Miniatures are both baby owlbears by Bite the Bullet, printed by Pluto Minis.
The guy on the left is the first mini I painted after trying out a paint and take at a convention. The one on the right was finished today, exactly a year after the first. I’m proud of them both, they’re different points in my journey and I’m honestly still having so much fun with this hobby. Here’s to many more years. 🥂
Full disclosure, I’m a 2D artist as well, which has definitely helped me pick things up quicker, especially since I don’t really watch tutorials.

For this Ork, I wanted to go with something a bit different from the usual green skin. Bright turquoise, deep blue and purple shadows, combined with some worn reddish metal and dirty yellow trousers.
I had a lot of fun playing with the volumes and pushing the contrast on the skin. The goal was to make him look colorful and expressive without losing that rough, brutal Ork feeling.
I also tried to give each material its own character, from the battered metal and scratched blade to the skin, fabric and little details.
Definitely one of those minis where everything just started to come together naturally. No overthinking, just painting and having fun!
Hope you like this angry little guy!
C&C always welcome! 💙

This was my first time trying decals, and I decided to print my own. I definitely need some products and techniques to blend the decal into whatever its on.
Next, I have to relearn how to light the mini to look good with the new camera.

Fun little gobbo figure I finished up recently! He was a good ole time to paint. I definitely need to get myself some more greenskins sometime.

Nowhere near as good as half the stuff that gets posted here, but I'm proud of it.
Thanks for the feedback on my last post to everyone who commented.
C&C welcome to help me improve.

I was expecting to get something close to what's in the picture next to the paint, but all I get is this transparent "shattered glass" look that flakes off and falls apart as soon as I touch it.
I've applied it directly to bases that are primed and painted with acrylics. Tried applying thin layers and real thick layers, get the same result with both.
What am I doing wrong, and what should I do instead?

I painted this fellow in the brief time my kid was napping yesterday. This model is hand-cast in metal and full of character without fiddly details. Really fun to paint.

I finished this model after months of work. I learned a ton about nmm and light placement after this project. I got burnout after 4 months and decided to finish instead of continuing to work on my mistakes. I also got burned out from a failed base attempt, and this is what I salvaged. I would like paint one of these bad bodies in the future after I have mastered these techniques. I know a lot of things are not correct, and lots of the highlights needs better placement. Please feel free to comment and critique this model. Do any of you guys have any tips to prevent model burnout? Because it was a bad for after this model.

I used to collect and paint minis 13 years ago as a kid, but the hobby slowly dwindled away after my citadel paint pots dried :')
Constructive criticism welcome!
What should I work on the most to improve?

Really enjoyed working on this piece. Tried my best to capture the raw energy and expression of the dance through the highlights on the skin and the deep contrast in the dress folds. Hope you like it.

Would love some recommendations or tips drawing a blank as I was focused on just trying to make it look a bit like Magma which I’m happy with even if a bit rough
