Information The Home Depot Hack: A Primer

If you're new to this sub, you might be confused by how often people mention "hacking". I wrote this up to try to explain what it is, why people do it, and how to do it yourself. Hacking a deal should be something that everyone is at least aware of, because it can potentially save you a lot of money.

For the record, I don't live in the US, where "hacking" is most prominent, so I don't actually get to hack deals at all. I've just seen it explained and dissected so often that I thought I'd compile the info here, hopefully making it easier for others to reference.

Edit to add (06/11/2025): Apparently you can hack deals in Canada, specifically the "buy that, get this free" promotions that they often run. It just doesn't work for online orders. So, if you want to hack a deal in Canada, you have to do it in-store, which means that you'd have to return the item you don't want in-person, at the Customer Service desk. This also means that you won't see the discounted price on the receipt until both items are scanned at the till.

Edited again to add (05/26/2026): If you're suddenly unable to make online purchases on the website or the app, your account may have been flagged by their system. I think HD uses some software or algorithm to identify specific buying behaviours that may flag user accounts exhibiting such behaviour. It's probably meant to catch return abusers and resellers, but also to curb identity theft/credit card fraud. If this happens to you, you can call in to Home Depot Corporate to explain what's happening so they can look into it and restore your account. You may also be able to just use the Live Chat option to escalate your issue.

What is hacking?

HD will often run sales and promotions on items that, when purchased together, are discounted to a lower price. A deal is hackable when the discounted prices are applied in a way that allows you to return one or more line items back to the store at the discounted price. Note that the refund is not limited to a gift card or in-store credit, it is refunded directly to your original payment method (cash, credit or debit).

How do you hack a deal?

A hackable deal will show the price breakdown in your cart, with discounts on each line item to reach the promotional price for that "package". Returning one or more of these line items at the discounted price allows you keep the other items at the discounted price. This is pretty common in the US. Some other countries, on the other hand, don't usually apply the discounts this way, so most of the time, they're unable to "hack". In Canada, you normally cannot hack an online purchase, but it is possible to hack an in-store deal. Typically these hackable deals are "Buy More, Save More" or "Buy this tool, get this for free" promotions.

An example of a hackable deal is shown below. This is a Canadian Buy More, Save More deal, where if you buy 2 items, you get 15% off each item, and if you buy 3 or more items, you get 25% off each item. In the screenshot below, you can see the line item prices for the vacuum and the organizers have been discounted from their original prices. In this case, you can return both organizers for $89.98 CDN and keep the vacuum, effectively paying $209.25 CDN for it instead of the regular $279.99. Alternatively, you can return the vacuum for $209.25 and keep the organizers for the discounted price of $89.98.

Hackable Deal

A non-hackable deal, like the one shown below, shows that the line item for the planer is actually "Free", meaning that all of the discount in the deal is applied to that item. Returning the "Free" item makes no sense, and Home Depot will not allow you to return the miter saw to keep the planer for free.

Non-hackable Deal

The hack works on more than just Milwaukee stuff. Any promotion that reduces the cost of each line item in the promotion is hackable. This means that you can potentially hack Makita, DeWalt, Bosch, etc. in the same way.

One more thing to add..

People have asked about how often you can "get away" with hacking a deal before they ban you. At least with regard to Home Depot, there isn't anything to "get away" with as you're not doing anything wrong by returning a product that you bought and no longer want. What you want to avoid is abusing returns in general.

To clarify with an example, lets say over the course of a month, you "hack" 3 different deals, and end up returning 3 items. It's very, very unlikely that you'd run into any issues. On the other hand, if you were to make 15+ purchases over the course of the month, and then return all or part of 10 of those purchases over 2 or 3 days, their system might flag your account for suspicious activity. Again, this has nothing to do with returning discounted items. If your account is flagged or banned, it's more or less due to your return history, and it's done to help curb or prevent return fraud. You'd be able to sort any issues out by contacting Home Depot customer service, if you were to ever encounter this.

Finally, keep in mind that returning a discounted item is not unique to Home Depot, which means that theoretically, you can "hack" any deal from any retailer, as long as they don't have policies preventing it.

.. and one more note, added today (Aug 12, 2026). Over the last year or so, it seems that HD has implemented or adjusted their algorithm that tracks online purchases and flags certain instances of "suspicious behaviour" automatically (like cancelling items immediately after placing the order). This can potentially result in an online purchasing ban on your account. This is completely speculation on my part, so take that for what it is, but I would highly recommend just sticking to refunding whatever you don't want in the store, or at least waiting for the item to be ready for pickup before trying to cancel it. In light of this, I've removed the "hacking the hack" portion of the original post.

Hope that answers your questions! Anything else that you feel should be included, just comment below. Thanks!

Just upgraded from my old brushless Ryobi set to these all with either the same or significantly more power from the 18v system. Did a full blackout on all my new tools and couldn’t be happier! Absolutely badass performance and look! Anyone done this to theirs? Anyone do custom colour lettering !?

Purchase Advice Looking for Install Driver, multi voltage charger, and battery for Driver

• Upvotes

I am looking to get the 4-1 install driver as cheap as possible but don’t have any batter or charger for it. I have a buddy on site as well that has a m18 battery for something but no charger for it. Wondering what the cheapest way to fix both of our problems would be. I can get away with one 12v battery but could do 2 if the deal makes more sense. Having a hard time figuring out where to look.

Purchase Advice Is there a 3/8 M18 ratchet that isn’t the 2668?

Looking to stay with M18 as I don’t have any M12 stuff but it seems like the only ratchets are on the M12 side. I’m considering just getting the 2668 “right angle impact wrench” but I don’t really need the impact part and am not a fan of it being friction ring instead of pin. Do I have any alternatives on the M18 side?

Is Milwaukee the only one that makes the containers for the food warmer? $30 for one is kinda ridiculous, would love to get some cheap knockoffs if possible

Purchase Advice M18 or M12 stubby?

Hi, I’m 16 and working a part time job in an agricultural workshop alongside college.
I also do a lot of spannering on my own projects outside of work and I’m looking at getting a stubby
impact.

I already have some M18 tools (drill, impact driver, 1/2” high torque) so it would make sense to go with an M18 stubby but I’ve heard a lot of good stuff about the M12 new gen.

I’d eventually like a few m12 tools aswell so it would also make sense to make a start with m12
Id eventually like a die grinder, soldering iron and ratchet. Any good?

I’ve spoken to some people who say get the m12s and I’ve spoken to people who say stay away from m12.

So, which is better and what should I buy?
M12 1/2” stubby new gen. Or. M18 1/2” stubby new gen

Also, are there any m12 tools to stay away from and what other tools would you recommend I get?

Thanks in advance

M12 Keeping extra M12batteries?

Are extra XC5.0 batteries worth keeping around if I only currently have an M12 Stubby and 3/8 Ratchet? Only currently have on CP2.0 and XC5.0 total to power them now.

I know you can “never have too many” but just don’t want them sitting if the usage is low enough to make them sit and degrade over time.

I just got the Gen 2 M12 Stubby a few weeks, and this thing is crazy.... These lugs in the picture belong to a 2009 Yukon denali xl awd. I think 140 ft lbs are the torque specs, but you can clearly tell thats not the case anymore 😂. I didn't think it was gonna even stand a chance loosing them, but it honestly did it with no hesitation at all, it probably took 10 to maybe 15 seconds to remove all of them..... also does anyone got any ideas why this is the only set of lugs on my truck that look like this the rest look complete normal 🤔

Information Hello Milwaukee users I’ve got a question about some sales in my area

So my question is does MAP pricing really mean it’s the cheapest price? MAP means minimum advertised price but is that totally true or do tools go on better sales during Black Friday or anything? Thanks

Then $100 for 2 batteries & the charger (came with the 3/8 ratchet but I returned it that’s why it came to $100 for the battery charger set )

M18 M18 Inflator Issue

Post image
46 Upvotes

I am trying to inflate my tires and I notice that the inflator stops short of the psi and I have to keep hitting the start button. Is this normal?

I also noticed that when I inflated some tires and it shows the set psi, if I remove and reconnect it the psi is still short of the set psi. Often my multiple psi and I have a quick connect attached. Not sure the issue with this.

Edit: since some people have posted, I am aware of the stop, start pauses when inflating and it does do that but it also stops short and doesn’t reach the set psi. I wait 5 minutes and it doesn’t resume to meet that set psi. I have to manually keep hitting the button for it to continue.

I use this open flow chuck as I read as suggested due to the open flow design to not let out as much air as the screw on from the attached hose. (This behavior of the stops still happens without this chuck as well) https://jacosuperiorproducts.com/collections/tire-air-chucks/products/l2x-tire-inflator-air-hose-extension-nozzle-locking

Information Battery discharge

I’m moving overseas in less than two weeks, and have no current projects. I have m12 and m18 5.0 batteries. The shipping company is requiring me to have the batteries below 25%. Is there a way to safely discharge the batteries without sitting there running my tools?

30 inch box with the top stack and hutch. Everything works, no issues with drawers or anything like that. There’s roughly a 4inch by 4inch area of a paint chip below the bottom drawer. What would someone pay for something like this?

Packout Small/Tiny Storage Boxes For Packout Dividers?

Anyone have recommendations on small storage boxes that close/have kids but also fit within the 3.5” L x 3.5” W x 2.5”D dividers (or even 3.5” L x 7” W”)? I want to compactly store loose items like butt connectors, cotter keys, zip screws, etc without them jostling around inside and getting loose.

Doesn’t have to be fancy, just has to work.

Anyone else buy the three pack of glasses from
Home Depot? It’s nice because they’re cheap, but the ends of them rub off and the plastic beneath is a little sharp. Hoping Milwaukee will see this and fix.

Purchase Advice Heated Lunchbox Questions

Hi all

Does anyone use the milwaukee heated lunchbox?

I currently have an aliexpress/noname brand chinese one that works really well but am thinking of getting the milwaukee.

My questions are

1) Can the unit plug into auxillary power? My chinese one just takes a 25 watt usb supply from the car so its battery can stay topped up as i drive between jobs.

2) Is the steel tray microwave safe? My chinese one is microwave safe so i can pre-heat the soup or meal before i leave for work in the morning.

3) What is the element wattage? The promo and instruction manual says it takes 2 hours to heat up. My chinese one will sit on warm mode which puts a constant 10 watts of heat in to keep the food around 30 degrees. Then when I put it into heat mode which I believe is about 60-80 watts, it only takes about 30-45 minutes to bring 1 litre of soup and vegetables up to super hot for eating.

I never use the auto-start timer. I find its easier just to start the heating when i know im going to be finishing a job in "about" half an hour. If i had to predict at 8am my lunch break might be at 1pm then i dont know how long each job is going to take and it would be a bit annoying if the food is too cold by the time i get to it at 2pm.
Edit: Just confirmed it has a "heat now" mode. But if its only a 30 watt element then its still a long time to plan ahead if it still takes 2 hours to heat.

Having the auxillary usb power is great because if i only eat half of it, i can still reheat it again later as the battery is still mostly full.

4) If you do have one, what are your thoughts on it? Do you like it? What kind of foods are you having in it?
