Do you have one (or 10) too many Eames chairs? Does the color of that Cathrineholm bowl you picked up for a steal last year not really match the rest of your kitchen? I bet you can find someone here who would love to take them off your hands. Post your mid century items for [free]/[trade]/[sale] here!

This is also the space to show off any of the awesome mid century inspired stuff you make, as well as the links to your Etsy/Ebay/Etc

Guide for IDing furniture and where to find actual sources.

This has came up time and again but a few times over the last few days I have found myself linking to my google drive doc about where to find primary sources for MCM stuff.

First of all, the rules of this group and r/midcenturymodern in regards to IDing items is going to change. I will make these changes today. First, if you make a claim as to a maker or designer, you are obligated to provide sources for the claim you make if asked. This includes mods or just regular users. Second and this is absolutely non-negotiable, sales or auction listings in themselves are not reliable sources. If the sales listing includes a tag, article, or catalog from the period then that information may be shared, but DO NOT LINK TO SALES LISTINGs, at all, but especially not to "prove and ID" This applies to the highest end and most respected auction houses, dibs, charish or any other platform. Maybe they give you a jumping off point, and you find out the information is correct. If needed I can give thousands of examples of current listings that contain complete bullshit information. Third, don't tell people "use google" or "try google lens" etc. As stated above this will very often lead to false information from sales listings.

So I know you are probably thinking "don't use google, how do I even find anything on the internet without google" Well, I keep this living list of sites with excellent resources, nearly all are free.

Of all these groups I have to give a shout out to "The MCM files" I have no clue why there are not more people in this group. It is not a group to ask for an ID, its just a group where some of us researchers basically dump photos of stuff we look into. I personally have posted thousands of images to this group. Its free, i get absolutely nothing out of anyone joining the group, its just a lot of the questions people ask on here are already solved there, but it will never show up on google because of facebook's walled garden.

Kent Coffey Hutch estate sale score!

I've been buying furniture for the new home I am building myself, and just added this to the collection! Saw this posted in an estate sale 85 miles away (close-by in Texas terms), got up early this morning, and wound up being 1st in line. Didn't quibble one bit about the asking price of $650, as this is in excellent condition, other than needing a cleaning. Looking forward to getting my home built to showcase this and MCM china that will go in it!

Irresponsibly looking at cedar chests before I got paid - wound up getting a 1940s one for free!

First two pictures are where it’s settled for now, outdoor pictures are during cleanup, and the last ones are what was inside when I got it.

Good amount of work to get it usable again (full of scratches and scrapes, inner tray and bottom drawer were both broken) - but certainly worth my time for such a beautiful thing!

Listed at $0 on Nextdoor. Not listed as “FREE”, listed at a price of $0.00 - thought it was a mistake, or one of those annoying “make me an offer” things. Nope! Just cost me exactly $0.00.

(Before anyone asks - no, I do not have small children in the house that could lock themselves inside. No, the key I found rattling around does not go to that lock, the correct key is still in the envelope.)

Picked it up for 18 usd. The top is in rough shape but I think a sand and refinish on that is about all I'd need.

Help identifying this unusual vintage chrome bar cart — maker or era?

Thumbnail

I'm hoping someone here might recognize this rather unusual chrome bar cart.

It features two large circular chrome side frames, two oval shelves with gallery rails, and casters. The upper shelf has clear glass, while the original lower glass is missing and has been replaced with a decorative insert.

I've searched eBay and several vintage furniture sites without finding an exact match. The design seems to have some Art Deco and Hollywood Regency influences, but I'm uncertain about its age or manufacturer.

Does anyone recognize this particular design or have any ideas about its maker, country of origin, or approximate production period?

I'd appreciate any leads. Thanks!

Hi!
Just wanted to share the pair of the MCM Inspired Upcycled Lamp .
I had to make a tool for the sanding because the sandpaper wouldn’t work properly.
I have another 2 shades available, so I am thinking on building a ceiling light with those . The same base maybe ? I don’t know .

I picked this up on FB. I’m going to clean and sympathetically refinish the wood, but not sure what to do about the pad cover. I’d like to properly clean it (and probably replace the insert if I can get the right size) because I think it’s about 60 years old. Any ideas or experiences as to how to do it effectively without shrinking/damaging the fabric. I live in the highlands and there isn’t a dry cleaner near me, which I assume would be my best option . 🤷‍♀️

Does anybody know who made this lamp? Also, it has no on/off switch and only turns off when you unplug it from the wall was that a common thing back then?

Help us choose paint colors for our 1961 home!

Renders were done by me in Photoshop.

Pics 5&6 are the current colors: a very light grey with a very dark purple.

We’re open to other suggestions! We’re in the trees and would like to stick to a natural color palette that fits in with Mid Century.

How should I go about restoring a 1966 ranch home?

Thumbnail
gallery
25 Upvotes

I've been living at the 1966 ranch house my dad grew up in for awhile now and want to bring it back to something period correct for when it was built. It's had a few renovations over the years by my grandparents but they didn't change anything particularly permanent. They're still living so I can ask if they have any photos of the house from back in the late 60s.

Offhand what I know isn't original: the formica counter tops (replaced in the 70s), the wallpaper (also 1970s), none of the flooring

What is original: most of the overhead lights, all the wood cabinetry and paneling, the aluminum sliding door (sadly broken and probably needs replacing). The paint color is original (needs repainting). House sat abandoned for 20 years but no major issues developed from that.

I don't feel it's purely midcentury due to how late in the time period it was built and how many seemingly traditional features are in it but that mixed style is largely from things that are original and I don't feel like I should change like the cabinets. Unsure on how to proceed with this project and looking for any advice or pointers.

Snagged these off Facebook marketplace, they look just like the Barcelona chairs however the wood spacer throws me off. They do have a made in Italy sticker on them.

My husband and I were visiting a smaller town in our state this past weekend. Took a wrong turn and ended up finding a thrift store! Came across this whole set (6 chairs + table) for $250 and couldn’t believe my eyes. We’ve been working on our kitchen reno and haven’t found the right combo until now!

Vintage MCM electronic clock converted to quartz

Manufactured in 1955 by United Clock Corp.
The clock was actually working when plugged in but the mechanism was failing and it was extremely noisy. I gutted it and installed a smooth motion (no ticking) quartz mechanism. The kit had a longer shaft than the original so the clock looks more "3D" than before (Sadly I could not reuse the original hands). Super happy with this find, with shipping it was about $45 total. The very last picture is the clock restored and working without the electric plug :)
