Announcement Welcome to r/Antiques, read this before posting!

This subreddit is dedicated to sharing and learning about antiques in your collection or that you find, or are considering buying. Antiques are items that are 100 years old or older.

When you're posting about a particular object places kindly include multiple, clear photographs of it from different angles so we can see it from every side. If there are any marks or identification (labels, signatures) please take close ups of those. If it's pottery or porcelain, tag photos of the bottom, if it's a rug make sure to have a shot of the back. Make sure that these photographs are clear and well lit so we can see the works in particular (preferably not surrounded by a bunch of other objects).

Make sure to also include dimensions so we know the size of an object. And your location.

Also explain what are you looking for. Are you asking for general information? Who the maker is? The age, value or provenance?

If you do not include a question, the dimensions and sufficient background information and photographs of the object your post may be removed by the moderators.

IN SUMMARY, include:

your location

multiple, clear photographs from a number of angles

any background information you have

close up of particular makers marks

the question you'd like to ask

Keep in mind, antique means objects that are a 100 years old or older. You cannot post newer items here. Share them in r/collectables instead.

These rules will make it easier for our subreddit antique experts to give you some help! Remember, if you're solely posting a link to a website/blog/store then this will be considered spam and your post will be removed (multiple posts may result in being banned).

Finally, keep these other subreddits in mind in case your post is better suited for one these -

Advice Old general store hardware cabinet - looking for info! Nashville, USA

Found this at an estate sale near Nashville, Tennessee. It was marked at $3k on day 1, now $2200 on day 2 (today). the previous owner had a general store and this was his hardware cabinet. There are still screws, staples and other odds and ends in the drawers.
It has roughly 140 drawers and comes apart into six sections, plus the top. The seller didn’t know the maker or age and thought it might be pine? The drawers all open cleanly except for one. I haven’t measured it.
Has anyone come across one like this or know what it might be worth? I’d love to figure out roughly when it was made and what wood it is. Online asking prices seem all over the place.

Date Early 19th-century Norwegian painted extending bed (dated 1818) – thoughts on construction, dating and regional origin? Norway

I recently bought this Norwegian skuvseng, a traditional farmhouse bed that extends in width, and would appreciate some input from those familiar with (Norwegian) antique furniture.

The bed has a blue-painted exterior, carved end panels and a wooden plank base. It measures 182 cm in length and extends from 79 to 134 cm in width. The front bears the inscription “Ole og Engri Olsdatter Hamre 1818”. It was purchased from Norwegian antiques dealer Kaare Berntsen approximately 37 years ago.

I’ve been researching Norwegian parish records to identify the people mentioned. Hamre appears as a farm name in both Gudbrandsdalen and Western Norway around 1800. My suspicion is Gudbrandsdalen, based partly on the bed’s appearance, but I haven’t been able to confirm this. Earlier parish records have also proven difficult to navigate.

Hi hello! I recently acquired two beautiful antique garments and am truthfully having a hell of a time dating them. I understand that styles changed pretty much every year during the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Any thoughts/help dating these and approximating fabric type or sewing techniques would be greatly appreciated! This is just too far out of my typical wheelhouse. Also if anyone has good resource recommendations for dating antique clothing please feel free to share them. I’m here to learn!

Advice Unmarked mirrored silver-lustre ceramic plate, 23 cm – possibly 19th century? Australia

I recently acquired this decorative ceramic plate and would appreciate help identifying its origin, age and manufacturing technique.
It measures approximately 23 cm in diameter.
The front has a highly reflective silver surface — clear enough to see my face in — with intricate white floral decoration. The surface feels completely smooth, including the decoration.
The reverse is plain white glazed ceramic with no visible manufacturer’s mark.
I’ve been investigating whether it might be English silver resist-lustre pottery, possibly nineteenth-century, but haven’t found an exact match.
Does anyone recognise the decoration or know whether this is genuine silver resist-lustre pottery or a later technique?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Advice Qajar vase questions - UK

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Hello - this attractive 25cm vase turned up in the U.K. (sadly drilled for an electric lamp).

It seems (to me) to be a Qajar vase partly in the Chinese style (hence the Chinese shape, temple lions on the neck panels, and the yellow lion ‘handle’ decorations).

It doesn’t look ‘right’ though - the material (fritware), colours, overglaze and style match Qajar style, but the figure painting (which seem hand painted) and decoration appear far too good compared to other Qajar vases I’ve looked at online.

Could it actually be a ‘good’ Qajar vase that’s just very well painted, or is it in fact a much more recent copy of a Chinese style Qajar vase - maybe not even Persian at all - maybe even made to be an electric lamp?

I’m also wondering about the pattern that’s showing on the base - presumably it transferred from something that happened in the kiln - does anyone know how this could have happened and whether this helps to identity or date the vase?

Any thoughts gladly appreciated!

Show and Tell Update to the cursed and/or cheap resin statue (NH, United States)

Well that post got way more attention than I expected! Many seem interested so I just wanted to post an update.

With the caveats that:

- I am an amateur! Not a gemologist or antique expert like many of you. I am just a lover of weird little things

- this is just a gem tester from Amazon that I bought a while ago to help my mother in law sort her jewelry

- this little statue is just a happy addition to our home. She made my son smile, she’s pretty, that’s really all I need. She doesn’t need to be a valuable score or anything like that

That said, here is what the gem tester said. Sorry for the photo angle, I only have so many hands/fingers :)

Thanks, all, for your insights and thoughts

Hi All! I am 99% sure this is authentic Meissen but I’m stumped on the date/era as I’ve never seen this pattern before. I believe it could be late 1800s early 1900s but could be totally wrong. Would love any thoughts! The swords are also different so I’m having a really hard time with it. I’m also a very novice porcelain collector so I’m looking forward to being in this group to expand my knowledge

Edit: I had a typo in my title meant Meissen 😳

Advice Shellac Finish or Shellac Plus Something? (Denver, CO USA)

Thumbnail

Greetings. I found this dresser that I probably paid too much for at the thrift, given its condition. the drawers are super smooth though and I love it. I have a similar little jelly cupboard that seems like someone stripped ALL the finish off it at some point.

I want to refinish it, or restore the finish. It would only be my third project, and the first two were so much trial and error. I was hoping for it to be shellac, since I have my dewaxed shellac flakes and denatured alcohol and I like dealing with shellac quite a bit. I did the denatured alcohol test on a couple spots. On the top, the coating smoothed out and turned shiny and nice. On the super thick part and the crazing on the sides, not so much.

Do you think this might just be because it’s thicker, or do you think it may be heavily waxed or have another type of coating over top? Any other tests I could do on the finish to find out what else may be on there?

Thanks so much for any ideas or input you may have.

Questions Paymasters desk? Postmasters desk? (Maryland, USA)

I'm looking for clarification about what this item is called. I've encountered it many times on Facebook marketplace (all were listings that were still active but the item was actually SOLD, sadly/annoyingly 😒) and its been called a few different things. I am hoping to find one that looks like this and is in decent condition so I want to narrow down the terms I am searching for. Also, if anyone happens to be selling one in my area (Maryland, USA) I'm interested!!
