Discussion Live Multi Track Band Recording Clickless -> Overdub Session
Tracked a band, was pretty strongly opposed to using a click track when doing their live takes, ultimately it turned out great. When I track live I do so horizontally, each take of the performance’s recording couple bars later than. I then use markers to label the songs and the band’s favorite takes in that project. Afterward, I’ll export these tracks to its own overdub project. My question is if you have a bunch of songs tracked without a click (tempo left at default 120 for the session), and you want to take advantage of some conveniences of “~the grid~” later on in mixing, and I don’t mean quantizing their performances, how are you doing so? I don’t need everything perfectly mapped but it helps me feel more organized later on and use some tempo sync’d fx etc. do ya just tap a rough tempo out with a metronome, use some of the tempo tools in logic, turn off the grid view all together and use a more tape machine type approach? What I definitely want to avoid is fucking up the performances with Flex Time or whatever time stretching stuff accidentally. I just figured getting a roughly accurate tempo could help with using the “count in” feature when punching in overdubs as opposed to the artist having to do some mental gymnastics hearing a 1234 at 120 bpm then start playing a song that’s more like 80 bpm -ish for example. Any nondestructive workflow tips would be appreciated!
