Question Lowest Cost Used Thinkpad for Linux
What is the lowest cost (in dollars) that you can find a used Thinkpad for, that is capable of running Linux?
It should at least be able to run a distro such as MX Linux or Linux Mint XFCE.
Where would you go to find such a Thinkpad at the best price? And how easy/difficult would it be to obtain?
What Thinkpad, generation, or specs, should be the minimum for this purpose?

X1 Carbon Gen 8 Bottom Cover - Captive Screw Replacement
Hi Everyone,
My ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 8 is missing a couple of the bottom cover retaining / captive screws. I’m looking to replace them and would appreciate help identifying the correct size or part number.
If anyone has purchased replacements that fit, could you share a link or recommend a seller? I’m in the US and would prefer to buy just the screws rather than another bottom cover.
Thanks!

Question Looking for a thinkpad for school ad CAD
Looking for some advice on a model. I’m trying to find a used ( or cheaper in general) thinkpad that I can run Linux Debian on and use something like freeCAD or another CAD software on. Not super intense models, just for 3d printing.
Preferably 16 gb ram, removable drive so I can upgrade it if needed, and around $1k or less.
Am I being realistic or am I asking for too much?

Other Fix for S3 sleep touchpad not working
on my thinkpad e14 gen 4 the touchpad died after every s3 sleep
ps/2 mode avoided the problem and that pointed to smbus. comparing the system state after a cold boot with the state after s3
one bit in the smbus controller config that the bios sets at boot and s3 clears
Here is a sleep hook and a small kernel patch fix it
https://codeberg.org/scada/thinkpad-e14-touchpad-s3-fix
similar problems were reported years ago in a 2017 patch and a 2018 thinkpad t480s report and kernel bugzilla 200737

Opinion ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 vs E16 Gen 3 (Ultra 7 255H) — owners, how are they holding up?
Hi all,
I'm a cybersecurity engineering student deciding between the Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 and the Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Gen 3.
My budget 1500$
I'll mainly use it for IT and DevSecOps projects, and I'll carry it to campus daily.
If you own either one, I'd love to hear about:
Thermals and fan noise under load
Real-world battery life
Screen quality
Build quality and keyboard
Linux support
RAM/SSD upgradability
Is the E16 worth the extra size, or is the E14 the better daily carry?
Any issues or things you wish you'd known before buying are very welcome. Thanks!

[Linux] Battery charge threshold
My laptop has an internal battery and an external one. The external one is unplugged.
I previously had tpacpi installed, and set charge max threshold to 80%
sudo tpacpi-bat -s SP 0 80 # set both batteries stop threshold 80
Sometime later tpacpi was uninstalled.
The internal one continues to stop charging at 80%.
When I plug in the external one, then start the computer, the charge threshold that I set previously still shows from the path below, and is 80, but the battery will charge to 100%.
Why?
T440s, Linux Mint 22.3
cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/model_name
45N1111 # internal
cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT0/charge_control_end_threshold
80
============
cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT1/model_name
45N1135 # external
cat /sys/class/power_supply/BAT1/charge_control_end_threshold
80
