My free lessons for learning Tamil are now at LearnTamil.com . They are designed for total beginners who are middle school aged (~ 10 y.o.) and older. I think they may be useful for the people on this sub-reddit. It can also be a good reference to answer some of the questions here about language basics.
My lessons have been on the internet for 20 years now (!), but they are harder to find due to URL changes over the years -- I had 2 people in the last month sending me very positive notes but also mentioning that it took them hours of internet searching to find these lessons. If you also have feedback, please find my email address from the website.
Best of luck to everyone learning Tamil!

For context,
I'm a Telugu guy who understands Tamil fairly well. I can understand around 70-80% of a typical modern Tamil movie without subtitles. but if it's a 90s rural drama or old movie, something like that, I understand around 50%.
I recently learned the Tamil script.
Can you guys suggest some Tamil books, short stories, or anything else I can start reading?
Which helps me to improve my Tamil reading speed as well as improve my Tamil vocabulary
Thanks

I'm learning to read and write Tamil.
Most vowel signs seem relatively easy to understand because they appear as distinct marks around the consonant.
But உ (u) and ஊ (ū) are confusing me because they can change the shape of the consonant itself.
I grouped these combinations into a few visual patterns. I'm wondering whether this is a useful way to learn or whether I'm overcomplicating something that children learn naturally. I am curious about how children are taught the vowel symbols in Tamil. Please share tricks and tips or how you learnt this symbol part.

i read some where in facebook post "வேழ்க்கை" it says that two peoples/couple desired to become one, i don't know whether this is true or not, because i never heard of this word. i know about "வேட்கை" which means desire. and both words are giving same meaning, yet different, does this word really existed or its a made up word...

Vanakkam
I’m learning Tamil very passionately, covering all aspects incl. written and spoken language.
While I’m very happy with my teacher, I’d love to find a fellow student (any level is fine!) to share goals and keep each other accountable.
I have plenty of study material to share as well. No rigid schedules or heavy pressure - just a friendly space to stay motivated on our journeys.
If you'd like to connect, feel free to drop a comment or send a message!

Hi, these two terms are appearing a lot in a text I am reading (can't post right now unfortunately) which takes place in a village in the Vanni in Jaffna.
I thought பள்ளன் was a caste, and assumed that பள்ளன் குளம் was a lake where they are perhaps bathing or washing? But now I'm questioning myself.
And then கிறவல் வீதி keeps coming up.. but I couldn't find anything.. I started to wonder if it's gravel, but a gravel house seems strange.

Is this sentence grammatical? I don't understand the use of "onnum" here. Gemini (AI chatbot) tells me that, in this context, "onnum" means "really" or "certainly." Is this right? Could the man speaking in the audio clip be saying "innum" instead of "onnum"?
EDIT - context: Some men (old hockey buddies) are having a celebration. The celebration is marred because the captain of the team died prematurely a year or two ago. So the speaker is rueing his absence. He's saying something like: the celebration would be happier if the captain was still around (to celebrate with us).

I have 1 IRL Gujarati friend from Vellore
He said that dialect of Tamil spoken by Muslim communities in Tamil Nadu sounds different from Standard Tamil or other dialects of Tamil
And also he mentioned that he heard many that he couldn't even understand it
Is there any Tamilar or 1 from Tamil Nadu who can explain this and also tell that do Tamil Muslims have its own Tamil dialect especially in Vellore side
