Product Megathread [Megathread] Do Black Levels Really Make a Difference on an OLED TV? LG OLED Perfect Black Explained
When watching a movie, you may come across a dark scene that looks gray or flat. Turning up the picture brightness may make the picture easier to see, but it does not by itself improve black-level performance or restore the contrast that gives the image its depth.
That’s why black-level performance isn’t just about making dark scenes darker. It shapes the entire picture: how cleanly bright areas stand out against dark ones, how vivid colors and highlights appear, and how much detail you can see in the shadows.
If black levels are a priority, look for features such as self-emissive pixels, independent pixel-level control, and black-level performance verified under specified ambient-light conditions.
What Is LG OLED’s Perfect Black and What Difference Does It Make?

ⓒ LG.com CA
On LG OLED, Perfect Black refers to the display’s ability to produce deep blacks across different viewing environments like dark or bright room. This is made possible by self-emissive pixels, each of which is controlled independently and can turn off completely. This precise pixel-level control helps create lifelike image quality without distortion or exaggeration.
LG OLED’s Perfect Black performance has been verified by UL Solutions, with black levels of ≤0.24 nit at ambient light levels of up to 500 lux. Under the same lighting conditions, Perfect Color was also verified with color consistency levels of more than 99%.
So what does that mean when you are actually watching something?
Consider the scenes where black levels matter most: the depths of space and night skies, or shadowy cities and alleyways, where deep blacks appear alongside bright highlights. Bright city lights and illuminated pich-side markings can then stand out clearly against darker surroundings.
This separation between perfect black and bright highlights helps give the overall image its contrast, depth, and definition.

What Are the Best Movies for Testing Black Levels on an LG OLED TV?
Movies featuring night skies, space scenes, deep shadows, and bright lights against dark backgrounds are among the best for testing black levels on an LG OLED TV. Revisiting a movie you already know well can make these differences even easier to notice.
If you’d like to experience it for yourself, here are a few titles tested by redditors:
- Excalibur ARROW
- Bay of Blood 4K
- Silent Hill
- Texas Chainsaw Massacre
- 1917
- Blade Runner 2049
- Alien

What Do LG OLED Reviewers Say About Black Levels in Real-World Viewing?
To see how Perfect Black translates into actual viewing, we gathered impressions from two redditors and a YouTube reviewer who experienced the LG OLED G6 black levels in different content and viewing environments. These comments reflect individual viewing experiences rather than standardized performance tests.

(ⓒ Spawnpoiint- G6 77”)
“It doesn’t matter whether you’re watching this in a bright room during the day or at night in the dark—the black levels are unreal.”- Spawnpoiint
“Perfect blacks. The expanded brightness makes for bold and beautiful color palettes across HDR/DV modes. At no loss to the perfect blacks only present on the OLED panels”- u/shruikang
“Bleak has never looked so beautiful. This disc probably does the best job of showing off the G6’s strengths. Watching this in a dark room was freaking incredible and it genuinely brought me back to how it felt seeing the film theatrically for the first time. The television takes the disc to a whole new level.” – u/dam_ships
Together, these reviews describe how the LG OLED G6’s Perfect Black was experienced in HDR and Dolby Vision content with increased brightness and vivid color, during dark-room movie viewing, and in both bright and dark rooms.
So, Here’s Our Question for You

Support Afterimages looking around in Game on LG QNED84BUA
I bought a LG 75” QNED84BUA today and trying to play Resident evil 9. I am running into a major issue where every time I move the camera there are some “blue trails” that follow some objects when they move. More specifically, if I look around, some objects will leave blue trails in their wake that are close behind then sync up when I stop moving. Any advice on this?

Discussion Micro RGB vs OLED vs Mini LED : 20 Buyer Types & Their Picks [2026]
I’ve got a G5 OLED and I love it, but I’m setting up my apartment and I need another screen. I figured a bit of research would settle it. By reading various reviews, spec sheets, and many posts on this subreddit, I managed to accumulate quite a few notes. Therefore, I decided to compile 20 types of buyers, each with their purchase option. Maybe it will be useful to someone.
--
| # | Category | Winner | Why | Wrong choice if... |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Home cinema purist | OLED | Perfect blacks, no blooming | You rarely watch movies |
| 2 | Serious gamer | OLED | Near-instant pixel response | You mostly play casually |
| 3 | Room full of windows | Micro RGB | Brightness overpowers glare | A window reflects straight into the screen |
| 4 | Room full of lamps and glossy surfaces | Premium OLED | Premium OLED reflection control | You’re on a lower-tier OLED |
| 5 | Sports fan hosting crowds | Micro RGB | Brightness, color, big sizes | You watch alone and care about contrast |
| 6 | The 100" dream screen | Micro RGB | OLED doesn’t reach that size | Your room can’t handle that size |
| 7 | Biggest screen per dollar | Mini LED | Largest sizes at the lowest price | You want premium contrast |
| 8 | HDR showpiece | Micro RGB | Reviewers measured around 4,000 nits | Blacks matter more to you than highlights |
| 9 | Photographers and creatives | Micro RGB | LG’s triple 100% color coverage (LG claim) | You never look at color closely |
| 10 | News, tickers and static-heavy viewing | Mini LED | No burn-in worry | You want the best picture |
| 11 | Wall-mount minimalist | Premium OLED | Slimmest, cleanest look | Brightness is your top priority |
| 12 | Small room or bedroom (55" and under) | OLED | Micro RGB doesn’t come that small | You want a huge screen |
| 13 | Tight budget | Mini LED | Best value | You can stretch to a premium set |
| 14 | Best picture, money not a problem | Premium OLED | LG itself calls it the most complete performer | You want maximum brightness and size |
| 15 | Chaotic family household | Mini LED | Durable, no static-image anxiety | Picture quality is the priority |
| 16 | Wide seating spread | OLED | Strong viewing angles | Everyone sits dead center |
| 17 | Early adopter | Micro RGB | The newest tech in LG’s lineup | You want a proven, mature panel |
| 18 | Vivid animation and colorful content | Micro RGB | Color purity (partly LG claim) | You mostly watch dark, moody films |
| 19 | Casual streamer | Mini LED | Good enough, cheapest to own | You’re picky about picture quality |
| 20 | Working from home with the TV always on | Micro RGB | Bright, no burn-in concern | You want the best black levels |
.
I have not yet decided on the type of display that I am buying for the apartment, so I would really like to hear what you’d pick. If you live with Micro RGB or Mini LED, in particular, I would really like to hear where I was wrong.
Quick disclaimer: I only own the OLED. The Micro RGB and Mini LED picks come from research and reviews, not from living with them.

[Sound Suite] Review & Setups M7 speakers without H7 soundbar
So I just bought a 65 inch G6 at Best Buy and it came with a free M7 wireless speaker. I would have bought the H7 soundbar but it was a bit out of my price range at the moment ($800+). My question is if I buy another M7, can I connect both M7s to the G6 without the need for the sound bar, and will it even sound good that way? Or is the H7 soundbar completely necessary?

Support LG TV DNS issue
I have this old model LG 49UN7300AUD from probably 2020 or 2021, and it is currently running with webOS 5.6.2-21, and connected to a Bell Giga Hub, and I’m trying to figure out whether the issue is with the TV, the router, or the interaction between them…
The TV connects to my Bell Wi-Fi network, and the Wi-Fi status shows as connected all the time, but when using the TV’s built-in web browser to watch videos, the video eventually stops playing and appears to be DNS connection issue.
I tried restarting the TV and restarting the WiFi modem, but both are temporary fix, sometimes it gets disconnected after 10 minutes and sometimes it works for 2-3 days and I have to restart everything again.
Does anyone know what could cause this?

[OLED TV] Product Trial & Promotion Does Screen Size Really Matter When Watching TV? Testing the LG Micro RGB evo 86-inch with Marvel Movies
LG provided me with this television at no cost as part of a promotional event. I was asked to share my thoughts about the product, but everything I say in this review reflects my own experience and opinions.
I have had the opportunity to spend some time with the LG Micro RGB evo 86” 4K TV, and after watching everything from regular TV to some of my favorite Marvel movies, I can honestly say the picture quality has been impressive.
One of the first movies I watched was Spider-Man: No Way Home, and this TV really shows what a movie like that can look like when you have excellent color performance and deep blacks. Spider-Man’s red-and-blue suit looks incredibly vivid, while the darker scenes have a depth that makes the picture feel much more cinematic. The colors pop without making the entire image look unnatural, and the bright highlights in action scenes really stand out.
Marvel Movies Look Incredible
Marvel movies are a perfect way to appreciate what the Micro RGB evo display can do. There are so many different colors, dark scenes, bright effects, explosions, city lights, and fast-moving action happening throughout these movies.
With Dolby Vision, those differences become even more noticeable. The additional contrast, highlights, and detail help give scenes more depth, particularly when you go from a very dark scene into something filled with bright visual effects. Instead of everything looking flat, there is more separation between the shadows, colors, and highlights.
I especially noticed this while watching Spider-Man: No Way Home. The nighttime city scenes looked fantastic, and the combination of deep blacks with the bright lights throughout the city gave the picture a lot of depth. Spider-Man’s suit colors also looked extremely vivid during the action sequences.
For movies available with IMAX Enhanced, the experience gets even better. The larger 86-inch screen makes a difference by itself, but combining that size with the color performance and Dolby Vision capabilities makes movies feel much more immersive. Action-heavy scenes have a scale that is difficult to appreciate on a smaller television. Something else I immediately wanted to experience was Avengers Endgame. The moment the portals started opening, my whole room glowed orange. I felt as if I was back in the theater.
Micro RGB evo vs. Samsung Frame and Frame Pro
I also have experience with both the Samsung Frame and Samsung Frame Pro, as my wife enjoys Samsung TVs, so I had a pretty good point of comparison.
The Frame TVs have a beautiful picture and are excellent if you want a television that can blend into your room and double as artwork. However, from a pure movie-watching perspective, I prefer the LG Micro RGB evo.
The biggest difference for me is color and overall picture impact. The LG has a more vibrant, impressive presentation, especially when watching movies with HDR and Dolby Vision, something Samsung trades off for their in house HDR. The deep blacks and vivid colors make movies feel more cinematic, and the 86-inch size is a huge advantage when you’re sitting down for a movie night.
The Samsung Frame’s matte display is great for reducing reflections and making artwork look more natural, but there is a tradeoff. When you are watching a movie, I do not feel like the matte finish allows the filmmaker’s intended picture to come through quite as completely. The image is still very good, but some of the richness and punch of the original presentation can feel slightly muted compared with the LG.
That is an important distinction: the Frame is fantastic as a lifestyle TV, but the LG Micro RGB evo is the one I’d choose when the priority is watching movies, games, sports or anything not art related.
Size Makes a Difference
At 86 inches, this TV is obviously large, but that’s part of what makes it so enjoyable for movies.
Marvel movies, especially those with IMAX Enhanced content, benefit tremendously from the larger screen. Spider-Man swinging through New York or the huge action sequences in Marvel films feel much more immersive when they occupy this much of your field of view.
It is the kind of TV where you start noticing details you may not have paid attention to on a smaller screen.
Sound
The sound has also been better than I expected from a television this size. Dialogue is clear, and there is enough presence to make watching movies enjoyable without immediately feeling like you have to add a sound system.
That said, if you have a compatible Dolby Atmos sound system, I would absolutely pair it with this TV. The combination of a huge 86-inch picture and Atmos sound makes for a much more theater-like experience.
A Couple of Things to Know
The TV isn’t perfect, though.
Because the display is so large, overhead lighting can occasionally produce some reflections. It’s nothing that ruins the viewing experience, and it’s nowhere near what I’ve seen with the LG G5, which can look almost like a mirror under certain lighting conditions. Still, if you have bright lights directly above the television, you may notice them during particularly dark scenes.
Another thing I’ve noticed with my family is that the TV can be very bright. Most members of my family have blue eyes and are a little more sensitive to bright screens, so we generally turn the brightness down to make the TV more comfortable for everyone. Fortunately, there is plenty of brightness to work with, so lowering it doesn’t take away from the overall picture quality.
Last issue about the TV but this one is strictly being picky. If you want the TV to be flush, you can not use the LG suggested slim mount. The mount is just small enough to where you the top bolts won’t flush so you have to outsource a different mount. It does have the spots for the rectangle mounts on the top corners, but LG is currently out of those.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the LG Micro RGB evo 86” 4K TV has been an excellent television for movie watching.
The combination of Micro RGB evo color performance, deep blacks, Dolby Vision, the enormous 86-inch screen, and support for an immersive movie experience makes Marvel movies look incredible. Spider-Man: No Way Home was probably the movie that impressed me the most because of how vivid the suit colors looked, how deep the nighttime scenes became, and how much detail and depth there was in the action. For a TV this size and detail, I felt like I was with Tom on the Statue of Liberty.
Compared with the Samsung Frame and Frame Pro that I also own, I would choose the LG when my goal is watching movies and getting the most cinematic picture possible.
The biggest strengths for me are the color, black levels, Dolby Vision, size, and overall movie-watching experience. The biggest drawbacks are the occasional reflection from overhead lights and the fact that the brightness may need to be turned down for viewers who are more sensitive to bright screens.

My Gaming Setup LG HDMI
I have an LG OLED65C16LA and I'm constantly having HDMI issues. My PC frequently loses signal and the TV shows "No Signal". I've tried different settings, cables, ports, and all the usual troubleshooting steps, but the problem keeps coming back.
To make things worse, my Sony soundbar, which worked flawlessly over HDMI for years, has also stopped working.
My PC is running an RX 9070 XT and is connected with a RUIPRO 8K HDMI 2.1 Fiber Optic Cable (48Gbps, 5m).
Is LG just bad, or am I missing something?

Support LG UltraGear evo 39GX950B OLED Curved screen issues
Hello all, I need some help with my newly bought LG UltraGear evo 39GX950B OLED Curved (bought in August 2026). Since a few days the screen starts to distort (even the OSD) and then goes completely black. After a few minutes, everything returns to normal for the rest of the day. I made a video of what happens. I tested all the cables, I tested different ports with different devices.
I have several devices plugged into one outlet—could the screen be getting too little power?

Support LG 34GN850 display issues
I have a 34 inch LG Ultrawide monitor, model 34GN850. I have a setup with a 4K HDMI receiver for all my gaming consoles plus an AV switch for my M2 MacBook and Windows desktop. I’ve displayed 3440 x 1440 without issues for years.
We were traveling for four months. Monitor was off and the surge protector it was plugged into was unplugged. There were some bad storms but again everything was off and unplugged. When I came back, I plugged everything in again and the below problems started.
I can display 1920 x 1080 or 3840 x 2160, but not the native 3440 x 1440. I’ve tried direct connect into both HDMI ports, removing all switches. I’ve replaced cables. I’ve confirmed the MacBook displays just fine on another monitor. I’ve even plugged in a Roku 4K TV stick, and it runs fine for 10 minutes or so but then soft locks where the screen goes black, I can’t change inputs, and I have to pull the power.
My last option is to try a HDMI to DP active cable here later today.
I’ve heard of monitors not working, but never “kind of” working. Anyone experience this and have a suggestion? I’d prefer to not buy a new monitor right now.

[Sound Suite] Product Information Question about the LG Sound Suite
I have an old model LG oled55c7v-z and I’d really like to get the full LG Sound Suite to pair with it but I’m just a bit confused from the reviews I’ve been reading online. Is the sound suite only compatible with newer LG TVs or will it work with any as long as you have the soundbar?
Are there any features that would not be available to me using the older tv? It’s paired with an Apple TV if that makes any difference?

Discussion TCL or LG 55inch TV
guys im planning to buy a 55Inch tv, mostly 3-4 OTT usage. Display, sound quality, hardware and long term smooth software matters for me. Not gonna play games or heeavy usage, just basic usage but it should last for 10 years. But concern is TCL provides 3gb ram, 32gb storage, while LG offers only 1.5gb ram and 8gb storage. But online sources says LGs hardware, OS are very good. Like its OS runs well on 1.5gb ram while google TV OS is quite heavier so it consumes more resources. Also my parents wants to go with LG since they are afraid TCL is some new brand, not much service centers or stores near by. Also heard some panell issues happening in few yrs.
Even in LG there are 2 models - 1 is normal LED 4k and mini LED. 5-6k difference in price, but it really makes difference in daily usage (mostly parents use), coz the dimming zones, no of LED , nothing is mentioned clearly by brands in entry level models(what if its a gimmick)? advice me
