LG provided me with this television at no cost as part of a promotional event. I was asked to share my thoughts about the product, but everything I say in this review reflects my own experience and opinions.
I have had the opportunity to spend some time with the LG Micro RGB evo 86” 4K TV, and after watching everything from regular TV to some of my favorite Marvel movies, I can honestly say the picture quality has been impressive.
One of the first movies I watched was Spider-Man: No Way Home, and this TV really shows what a movie like that can look like when you have excellent color performance and deep blacks. Spider-Man’s red-and-blue suit looks incredibly vivid, while the darker scenes have a depth that makes the picture feel much more cinematic. The colors pop without making the entire image look unnatural, and the bright highlights in action scenes really stand out.
Marvel Movies Look Incredible
Marvel movies are a perfect way to appreciate what the Micro RGB evo display can do. There are so many different colors, dark scenes, bright effects, explosions, city lights, and fast-moving action happening throughout these movies.
With Dolby Vision, those differences become even more noticeable. The additional contrast, highlights, and detail help give scenes more depth, particularly when you go from a very dark scene into something filled with bright visual effects. Instead of everything looking flat, there is more separation between the shadows, colors, and highlights.
I especially noticed this while watching Spider-Man: No Way Home. The nighttime city scenes looked fantastic, and the combination of deep blacks with the bright lights throughout the city gave the picture a lot of depth. Spider-Man’s suit colors also looked extremely vivid during the action sequences.
For movies available with IMAX Enhanced, the experience gets even better. The larger 86-inch screen makes a difference by itself, but combining that size with the color performance and Dolby Vision capabilities makes movies feel much more immersive. Action-heavy scenes have a scale that is difficult to appreciate on a smaller television. Something else I immediately wanted to experience was Avengers Endgame. The moment the portals started opening, my whole room glowed orange. I felt as if I was back in the theater.
Micro RGB evo vs. Samsung Frame and Frame Pro
I also have experience with both the Samsung Frame and Samsung Frame Pro, as my wife enjoys Samsung TVs, so I had a pretty good point of comparison.
The Frame TVs have a beautiful picture and are excellent if you want a television that can blend into your room and double as artwork. However, from a pure movie-watching perspective, I prefer the LG Micro RGB evo.
The biggest difference for me is color and overall picture impact. The LG has a more vibrant, impressive presentation, especially when watching movies with HDR and Dolby Vision, something Samsung trades off for their in house HDR. The deep blacks and vivid colors make movies feel more cinematic, and the 86-inch size is a huge advantage when you’re sitting down for a movie night.
The Samsung Frame’s matte display is great for reducing reflections and making artwork look more natural, but there is a tradeoff. When you are watching a movie, I do not feel like the matte finish allows the filmmaker’s intended picture to come through quite as completely. The image is still very good, but some of the richness and punch of the original presentation can feel slightly muted compared with the LG.
That is an important distinction: the Frame is fantastic as a lifestyle TV, but the LG Micro RGB evo is the one I’d choose when the priority is watching movies, games, sports or anything not art related.
Size Makes a Difference
At 86 inches, this TV is obviously large, but that’s part of what makes it so enjoyable for movies.
Marvel movies, especially those with IMAX Enhanced content, benefit tremendously from the larger screen. Spider-Man swinging through New York or the huge action sequences in Marvel films feel much more immersive when they occupy this much of your field of view.
It is the kind of TV where you start noticing details you may not have paid attention to on a smaller screen.
Sound
The sound has also been better than I expected from a television this size. Dialogue is clear, and there is enough presence to make watching movies enjoyable without immediately feeling like you have to add a sound system.
That said, if you have a compatible Dolby Atmos sound system, I would absolutely pair it with this TV. The combination of a huge 86-inch picture and Atmos sound makes for a much more theater-like experience.
A Couple of Things to Know
The TV isn’t perfect, though.
Because the display is so large, overhead lighting can occasionally produce some reflections. It’s nothing that ruins the viewing experience, and it’s nowhere near what I’ve seen with the LG G5, which can look almost like a mirror under certain lighting conditions. Still, if you have bright lights directly above the television, you may notice them during particularly dark scenes.
Another thing I’ve noticed with my family is that the TV can be very bright. Most members of my family have blue eyes and are a little more sensitive to bright screens, so we generally turn the brightness down to make the TV more comfortable for everyone. Fortunately, there is plenty of brightness to work with, so lowering it doesn’t take away from the overall picture quality.
Last issue about the TV but this one is strictly being picky. If you want the TV to be flush, you can not use the LG suggested slim mount. The mount is just small enough to where you the top bolts won’t flush so you have to outsource a different mount. It does have the spots for the rectangle mounts on the top corners, but LG is currently out of those.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the LG Micro RGB evo 86” 4K TV has been an excellent television for movie watching.
The combination of Micro RGB evo color performance, deep blacks, Dolby Vision, the enormous 86-inch screen, and support for an immersive movie experience makes Marvel movies look incredible. Spider-Man: No Way Home was probably the movie that impressed me the most because of how vivid the suit colors looked, how deep the nighttime scenes became, and how much detail and depth there was in the action. For a TV this size and detail, I felt like I was with Tom on the Statue of Liberty.
Compared with the Samsung Frame and Frame Pro that I also own, I would choose the LG when my goal is watching movies and getting the most cinematic picture possible.
The biggest strengths for me are the color, black levels, Dolby Vision, size, and overall movie-watching experience. The biggest drawbacks are the occasional reflection from overhead lights and the fact that the brightness may need to be turned down for viewers who are more sensitive to bright screens.
