My wife and I attended our very first Chiefs game yesterday !! We hail from the land of tailgating, cheeseheads and allegedly the "best fans".

But what we saw yesterday absolutely blew us away. The welcoming fans even to the people wearing chargers attire, the stadium, the absolutely highest levels of tailgating we saw in terms of food, games, music, and comradery.

What impressed us the most was what we didn't see. Not 1 drunk staggering around, and not 1 person puking in the stands, or the parking lot.

What a fantastic experience on so many levels, we cannot wait to return to the CHIEFS KINGDOM !!

Sitting in section 110 row 2 behind the end zone. Some dude was losing his shit right next to us arguing with security trying to get his group onto the field and while watching that unfold I got hit with either a punt or missed field goal.

Didn't see the kick so pretty much I'm just curious if it was Butker or Ariza who hit me and wondering if anyone saw it happen.

DISCUSSION Week 6 Run Game Tape Breakdown

Hi everybody, back again with the breakdown of the designed run game against the Chargers. Things were kept pretty simple this week and I don't have too much to call out from the gameplan, but it is very good news that 'simple' can end up looking like 6+ yards per carry thanks to the explosiveness offered by Walker. Last year simple would have been 15 carries for 65 yards.

No video this week as nothing really caught my eye, but if we get a few more keepers on the speed option I'll put them together into a video eventually. I just love NFL teams running option.

Play Breakdown

Down/Distance Formation Personnel Playcall Ballcarrier Result (S/F) Play analysis
Q1 13:45 1st & 10 Light 3"TE" 11 IZ Left Walker +13yds (S) Chiefs line up in a "3 tight end" formation but with WRs Armstrong and Worthy lined up in TE spots. The two interior double teams get excellent movement and Walker gets clean to the second level. Shoutout to Kingsley(+) for manhandling his DT.
Q1 13:09 1st & 10 Tight Bunch Right 11 IZR Right Walker +2yds (F) Trey Smith(-) completely whiffs on his matchup and forces an instant cutback into a bunch of Chargers, Walker does well to get anything out of this.
Q1 10:28 1st & 10 2x2 2TE 12 Split Zone Right Walker +4yds (S) Basic split zone, the backside double team gets a lot of movement on the DT but nobody climbs to a linebacker which leaves the MLB to make the tackle. Might be a communication/Mike ID issue because nobody tries to block him.
Q1 8:46 1st & 10 2TE Left 12 OZ Right Walker +3yds (F) The Chiefs do a pretty good job sorting out a run blitz at the point of attack but Henley makes a good play to force this back inside into pursuit.
Q1 7:29 3rd & 1 Tight Bunch Right 12 GH Counter Read Left Walker +33yds (TD) GREAT execution of counter here. Benson(+) buries his DL assignment, Smith(+) stands up Khalil Mack on the kickout block, Gray and Briningstool combine well on a linebacker, and Walker(+) beats the blitzing Henley to the hole and races for the TD.
Q1 0:39 2nd & 10 Gun 2x2 YL 11 Power Left Johnson +4yds (F) The Chiefs try to run power into a light box on 2nd & 10, but one of the two deep safeties is crashing down hard at the snap and makes the tackle. Play is well-blocked overall.
Q2 10:43 1st & 10 2x2 YR 11 OZ Left Walker +7yds (S) Well-blocked against a light box look in the high red zone.
Q2 10:08 2nd & 3 2x2 2TE 12 OZ Left Walker +6yds (S) Same play which is well-blocked again, Walker gets 1v1 to the CB and will probably feel like he should have scored.
Q2 9:21 2nd & 4 (G2G) 3TE Right 12 OZ Left Walker +2yds (F) Same play again but now in the low redzone with more congestion, 45 gets inside Gray and probably keeps this from being a TD but it's a tough alignment for Gray.
Q2 5:29 1st & 10 Gun 3x1 Right 11 IZR Left Walker +3yds (F) This is decently block but Walker(-) stumbles trying to make his cut.
Q2 4:56 2nd & 7 Gun 2x2 Tight Left 12 Speed Option Left Mahomes +10yds (S) More speed option! Mahomes knows how to run it and it is a very effective changeup for us! I think this needs to come back as a short yardage option as well. It's only a nice play from 53 that prevents this from going even farther.
Q2 1:53 2nd & 2 (G2G) Gun Bunch Left 12 GH Counter Right Walker +2yds (TD) This counter is going absolutely nowhere when the Chargers DL slants to the right and gets quick penetration, but Walker(+) rescues it with a spin and a quick reaction block from Mahomes.
Q3 10:39 1st & 10 2x2 2TE 12 OZ Left Walker +11yds (S) Very good work to seal the edge between Benson(+) and Armstrong(+) lets Walker get to the sideline uncontested. BTW, Ezeudu is in at RT as of this run.
Q3 9:17 1st & 10 2x2 YR 11 OZ Left Walker +13yds (S) Another iteration of outside zone against a light box where the Chargers never have any chance to stop this early. This time featuring an outstanding block by Cyrus Allen(+) on his CB which gives Walker more room to maneuver in space.
Q3 8:39 1st & 8 (G2G) Gun 3x1 Right YR 11 IZ Left Walker +2yds (F) This time Benson(-) steps too aggressively to the outside and lets the end man win inside and tackle Walker. If this was outside zone his block would make more sense but Walker and the rest of the line look like they're thinking inside zone to me, so I put this on Benson.
Q3 8:02 2nd & 6 (G2G) 3TE 13 Power Left Walker -1yds (F) This play never has a shot as Kingsley(-) and Gray(-) both get stood up at the point of attack and Walker just has nothing to aim for.
Q3 7:15 3rd & 7 (G2G) Gun 2x2 Tight Left 12 IZR Right Walker +6yds (F) I think Mahomes checks to this against a very light box. I like that we have that option to punish a team for getting too light on third and medium if we know we're in 4 down territory. This gets to the 1 very easily and might score if Ezeudu can stick on his block a touch longer.
Q3 6:34 4th & 1 (G2G) Offset I 3TE 13 2x Jumbo Power Left Walker 0yds (F) I'm actually going to put this on Walker(-) as I think he lunges into the pile instead of driving with his legs and ends up getting pushed backwards too easily. It's not a clean win by the OL but I think the pullers do enough that Walker should be able to push the pile over the line. The Tonga thing is played out though, he doesn't contribute anything here.
Q3 2:17 1st & 10 2x2 Tight YR 11 Duo Johnson +2yds (F) The double teams here are good but Gray(-) dips his head and lunges into Mack who swims him and makes the tackle. Blocking Mack 1v1 is a tough assignment but he just needs to square him up and lose slowly on this concept.
Q4 13:13 1st & 10 Gun 2x2 YR 11 Power Right Walker +1yds (F) The Chargers are slowly putting more players in the box, this time having 7 and an aggressive safety as well. I think Walker(-) makes the wrong read to try to bounce this outside instead of just hitting the hole and challenging the unblocked second level player (who is just not accounted for by the 6 blockers).
Q4 6:14 2nd & 5 Gun 2x2 Tight Left 11 IZR Right Walker +5yds (S) Great push from Smith(+) at the point of attack here and the Chargers are lucky that the first contact knocks Walker a bit off balance, otherwise this goes for even more.
Q4 5:29 1st & 10 2x2 2TE 12 Split Zone Left Walker +16yds (S) The Chargers are playing the run very aggressively now and it bites them as they overpursue and get bit by a nice cutback from Walker(+). Shoutout to Gray(+) and Worthy(+) for nice blocks in space.
Q4 4:38 2nd & 10 2x2 YL 11 OZ Left Johnson 0yds (F) Benson(-) must have misheard the playcall as everybody else is blocking outside zone left and his first step is to the right and smacking into his own guard. This leaves the DE unblocked and Johnson with not much to look at.

Takeaways

This week saw 23 runs for 144 yards and 2 touchdowns, a YPC of 6.3. There were 11 successes and 12 failures, an underwhelming success rate of 48%.
- Walker had 19 carries for 128 yards and 2 touchdowns with 10 successes and 8 failures
- Johnson had 3 carries for 6 yards with 3 failures (though not because of any errors on his part)
- Mahomes had his first designed keeper of the season, a successful carry of 10 yards

Things were pretty consistent in the run game until the goal line stand derailed us a little bit and pushed the success percentage below 50%. We've shifted to being much more zone heavy and the outside zone in particular was hitting pretty consistently against the Chargers.

I thought the offensive line played pretty well overall, and Ezeudu filled in for Moore without any hiccups after halftime. Walker was consistently rolling and Johnson looked fine as well though he was unlucky with blocking issues on his reps. Overall this was a pretty vanilla showing in terms of scheme and I think that probably reflected the fact that we didn't have to do anything super impressive against the Chargers. I would have liked to see us try something a bit more interesting in our short yardage opportunities however. The Tonga package has run its course and I would like to see Mahomes having more opportunities to roll out and get the defense stretched laterally in those situations.

DISCUSSION Is it time to talk about it? The curious case of Butker

Post image
646 Upvotes

He can probably make a 70-yarder. He's kicked some of the biggest, most clutch field goals in not only Chiefs history, but because of the high-profile stages he was playing on, NFL history.

He missed another PAT today, and another 50+ yarder. There's a part of me that gets miffed on the misses and then I correct myself and give him the free pass.

Then I started thinking, I feel like I have been doing this every other week for years. So I looked into it:

2023

XP%: 100% (1st)

FG%: 94.3% (4th)

40-49 yds: 7-7 (100%)

50+ yds: 5-5 (100%)

2024

XP%: 93.5% (21st - league avg 95.6%)

FG%: 84.0% (22nd - league avg 84%)

40-49 yds: 4-4 (100%)

50+ yds: 2-5 (40%)

2025

XP%: 88.6% (26th - league avg 95.6%)

FG%: 86.8% (15th - league avg 85.6%)

40-49 yds: 9-11 (82%)

50+ yds: 5-8 (62%)

2026

XP%: 93.3% (22nd - league avg 94.4%)

FG%: 76.9% (21st - league avg 84.7%)

40-49 yds: 3-3 (100%)

50+ yds: 1-4 (25%)

The Chiefs obviously have much bigger problems to worry about before placekicker, but these trends aren't good. Below average in a lot of cases. I just have a Lin Elliot sized gut feeling that this will come back to bite KC in the most opportune time. Has anyone else been thinking about KC maybe looking for kickers next season? He's signed through 2028 at about $6.4 million annually. He's the 4th highest paid kicker in the NFL. But he isn't the 4th best kicker in the NFL... he might actually be closer to being one of the worst/most inconsistent.
