Do you have a JR Pass, IC Card (Suica/Pasmo/etc.), or train travel question? Start here! (Monthly Thread - October 01, 2026)

Wiki and Discord

While quick-fire questions are allowed in this subreddit, please search the subreddit and check the wiki before posting to avoid exceedingly repetitive questions.

You can also jump-start your planning by joining our Discord server and asking your questions in the appropriate channels.

JR Pass Info

The nationwide JR Pass is a travel pass that allows train and bus travel for a fixed cost over a certain period of days on Japan Railways (JR) services. For more information on the pass, check out our wiki page or Japan Guide’s JR Pass page.

The JR Pass can be purchased in one of two ways: * Online at the official site * Online from an authorized retailer (also often called a "third-party seller")

The JR Pass is quite expensive, not suitable for all itineraries, and there is no way to be certain if it will be valuable for you without knowing your exact itinerary and doing the math out. If you are trying to work out whether a JR Pass is the right choice for you, here are some helpful calculators: * JRPass.com’s calculator * Japan Guide’s calculator * Daisuki calculator

There are also regional JR passes that can provide value for specific itineraries.

Train Travel

If you are looking to take trains in Japan, check out some of these resources for getting started:

If you are looking to buy advance shinkansen or limited express tickets, we recommend you buy from these official sites:

  • SmartEX app/website - for Tokaido/Sanyo/Kyushu shinkansen tickets (this includes the typical Tokyo/Kyoto/Osaka/Hiroshima golden route).
  • Ekinet - for JR East/JR Hokkaido shinkansen and limited express tickets. The Japanese version of Ekinet can reserve a wider range of seats all over the country.
  • JR West ticketing - for JR West trains, and this can also be used for golden route tickets or tickets to/from Kanazawa if other websites don't work for you.
  • JR Kyushu - for Kyushu trains.
  • Odakyu - for Hakone Free Pass, Romancecar, etc.
  • Keisei Skyliner - for the Keisei Skyliner airport train in Tokyo.
  • Kintetsu - for Kintetsu trains in the Nagoya/Osaka/Fukuoka area.
  • Nankai - for rapi:t, Koya-san limited express trains, etc.

Buying tickets from third-party retailers like Klook should be a last resort, as most third-party retailers mark up tickets prices and provide reduced offerings (such as no way to select seats beforehand).

Tap-to-Pay for Transit

As of March 25, 2026, Keikyu (access to Haneda) started to supported tap-to-pay payments, along with several other Tokyo-area train companies (see link for complete list), which allow passengers to use credit/debit/prepaid cards directly at transit gates. Please note that Tokyo Monorail (alternative access to Haneda), JR East, and Keisei (access to Narita) do not support tap-to-pay at this time.

If you are arriving in Osaka (Kansai International Airport): Nankai does support tap-to-pay payments, while JR West does not. If you are arriving in Fukuoka, Fukuoka subway does support tap-to-pay payments.

For more complete information about tap-to-pay, where it's available, and how to use it, see this page from Japan-Guide.

IC Card Info (Suica, Pasmo, ICOCA, etc.)

General Information

An IC card is a stored-value card used to pay for transportation in Japan. It can also be used for payment at convenience stores, restaurants, shops, vending machines, and other locations. There are ten major IC cards and all of them are interchangeable and usable in each other's regions, so it doesn’t really matter which one you get. For more information on IC cards, see our wiki or Japan Guide’s IC card page.

Physical IC Cards

If you would like a physical IC card to use on your trip to Japan, here are the options.

If you are landing in/starting your trip in Tokyo:

  • All forms of Suica and Pasmo, including Welcome Suica, are available for purchase in Japan. You can find them at major train stations in Tokyo, as well as at Narita Airport and Haneda Airport. Suica and Pasmo come in two forms: an unregistered version and a registered version (which requires you to provide some personal information like your name and phone number). Either is fine for the purposes of tourism.

If you are starting your trip in another region (e.g., Kansai, Kyushu, etc.), please see this page to identify which card you'll get, and it should be widely available at airports and train stations in that region.

Digital IC Cards

If you are looking to get a digital IC card, please note that digital Suica, Pasmo, ICOCA, and Toica cards can only be used on iPhones, Apple Watches, or Japanese Android phones (this means the phone was purchased in Japan). For instructions on how to get a digital IC card in Apple Wallet, see here. You do not need the Suica or Pasmo apps in order to get a digital IC card. A digital IC card can be loaded and used entirely through Apple Wallet. As of iOS 18.1, the option for adding a transit card might not show if your phone is not set to a region with transit cards (such as the US, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, etc.). You may need to switch regions or wait until you're in Japan to add a digital IC card.

Keep in mind that digital IC cards cannot be refunded (that requires a Japanese bank account), so you will need to burn down whatever value you’ve loaded onto them before the end of your trip.

As of March 2025, there is also a Welcome Suica app on iOS. This app allows you to create a digital Suica valid for 180 days, has integrated train/tourism information, and offers minor discounts at some tourist sights. While it does also allow for purchasing of unreserved shinkansen tickets, please note that this is for JR East shinkansen and not for the typical Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka-Hiroshima route (which is JR Central).

IC Card FAQ

I have an old IC card from a previous trip. Can I use it on my upcoming trip?

IC cards are valid for ten years after their last date of use, so if you received the card and/or used the card less than ten years ago, it’ll work.

Can more than one person use the same IC card for travel?

No. All travelers who want to use IC cards on transit need to have their own card. Most transit in Japan is distance-based, and the card is “keeping track” of your journey, and it can only keep track of one at a time.

Can I load money onto a physical IC card with a credit card?

No. Physical IC cards can only be loaded with cash, which can be done at ticket machines in train stations, convenience stores, and 7-Eleven ATMs.

I’m landing in Tokyo, but then I’m going to Osaka and Kyoto. Do I need a suica in Tokyo and then an ICOCA in Osaka/Kyoto?

No. Once you have one of the major IC cards, it can be used pretty much anywhere. There are some exceptions to this, but they are mostly on individual lines or in specific rural regions. For the majority of tourists, you'll be fine sticking with whatever IC card you originally received upon arrival.

Help! I tried to load my digital IC card through Apple Wallet and the transaction didn't go through! What do I do?

Did you attempt to create it/load it overnight in Japan? The digital system goes down for maintenance from about midnight to 5am JST, so try again during Japan's daytime hours. Beyond that, some credit cards (particularly Visas and Mastercards) have trouble with funding digital IC cards. Unfortunately, if you can't find a digital card + credit card combo that works for you, you may not be able to use digital IC cards.

Recommendations Where can I buy a tanuki statue in Osaka? (狸の置物)

狸の置物。I see them on doorsteps everywhere and I want to buy one as a souvenir for my family member! My grandma would find it hilarious. I live in Osaka and I can't go to very far places where they are famous for being sold. Is there a store for them in Osaka anywhere? I've explored Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi, and Nipponbashi up and down many times but not seen them.

Question Leaving Japan tomorrow - any must buys to make it less miserable?

Unfortunately our time has come to an end in Japan. We have a 15 hour trip tomorrow. The flight here was miserable. Are there any purchases you made while in Japan that made your trip home less miserable? I’m talking medicine, accessories like pillows or headphones for the tv, etc.

Question how to act with groping?

hello! im going on a trip to japan, yay! last time i was there 2 years ago. it was fun and im looking forward to it!

but unfortunately, ive been groped 2 times on the butt by men passing me when i was waiting in line. it happened fast and i kinda had a freeze reaction :(

another incident was on the train. i forgot the rush hour time and had to stand close to the door while it was really full. a man kept leaning back on my breast (☠️). first time felt like an accident, he was pushed into me, the following times he leaned in with his upper back, exactly on my boobs. i kept shoving him away, but it didnt help. eventually i put my backpack infront and pressed an (open) pencil in his back and it stopped lol

it shouldnt really matter, but i wore super normal clothes. maxidresses and jeans.

i know, i cant throw hands, but is there something else i can do? really dont want those assholes to get away with that behaviour. im from germany and here u can scream at them and slap them at least, the police wouldnt care (they will even secretly agree).

EDIT: wow, someone reported me. well guess what, groping is a real life issue and its unfortunately happening every day. theres nothing wrong in wanting to protect myself with ways that are according to the laws and culture of the country

EDIT 2: thank you all for your helpful comments! i feel more reassured now :)

Advice Golden Week 2027 with young kids: stay in Tokyo or head elsewhere first?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! We’re really excited about our first trip to Japan! We’re a family of four, with two kids aged 2 and 4.

We chose our dates based on flight prices, the weather, and when we could both take time off work. Next sencence is for context, not as an itenarity: We’re flying out on April 28, arriving at Tokyo Narita on April 29, and flying home from Narita on May 15, 2027.

After booking, we realized our arrival coincides with Golden Week. We’d love some advice/tips on planning around it, especially with young children. We’re hoping to explore beyond Tokyo while keeping the pace fairly relaxed.

A few questions:

  • Would you recommend staying in Tokyo for the Golden Week (so until around May 6) and exploring other regions afterward, or heading elsewhere first and returning to Tokyo once Golden Week is over?
  • Are there places or activities you’d suggest avoiding during that period? Anything you’d particularly recommend experiencing?
  • For those who’ve visited during Golden Week, how much did the crowds affect your trip? With accommodation and Shinkansen seats booked in advance, was getting around and sightseeing generally manageable?

We’re happy to adjust our itinerary and expectations. We’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences, especially if you’ve traveled with young kids.

Thanks!

Question When to visit: May end to june start, or mid december to end?

• Upvotes

We are thinking of going to Japan in one of the 2 ranges mentioned here: Mostly either end may to early june or mid december to new years.

Which is a better time to visit?
I've heard that Mt Fuji is not visible in End may? is that true?

Will december get too crowded?

And how is the vibe overall in end may time? Which dates should we go for best Mt Fuji visibility? I heard that it is better to go right at the start of a may trip because the clouds set in after that

Thanks! would appreciate any tips

Question Watching Godzilla in Japan: Are English Subtitles Available?

• Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’ll be visiting Japan in November first week and would love to watch the new Godzilla movie while I’m there.
Does anyone know if Japanese cinemas offer screenings with English subtitles or English audio/dubbing? I’m planning to visit Osaka and Tokyo, so recommendations for cinemas in either city would be really helpful.
If anyone has watched a Japanese movie in Japan with English subtitles or knows where I can check for such screenings, I’d really appreciate your advice. Thank you!

We're visiting:

Tokyo, osaka, kanazawa, shirakawago, takayama, magome, tsumago, kusatsu onsen and karuizawa. But happy to visit Kobe if the resturant is amazing

What are your favourite spots? We're particularly looking for good teppanyaki but it could be anything good, And as budget friendly as reasonably possible. Obviously I know its not going to be cheap cheap, but anything that was an amazing experience with unforgettable beef.

Question Aoshima JR Station - Couldn't tap out and no staff

Yesterday night I arrived in Aoshima from Kagoshima and couldn't tap out with my ICOCA. Since the exit was not barred, I thought I would just come back the next day and settle the issue with a staff member. Turns out the station is unmanned! What am I supposed to do here?

Advice Solo travel 3 weeks?

Hello 28F planning Japan end Feb/early March. I am taking 3 weeks off but confused on whether I should spend all 3 weeks in Japan or 1 week somewhere else as well as I haven’t explored that part of the world much and will be travelling solo. I heard it might be overwhelming doing only Japan for 3 weeks solo.

Any tips for a solo traveller to help with my budget would also be appreciated!

Recommendations Advice for second trip to Tokyo

I was in Japan for 5 weeks two years ago and did a lot of things in Tokyo and a bit in Yokohama and Kyoto.

I'll be back in Tokyo for 12 days Nov 17th-29th. I've already seen a lot of the city, many of the touristy places (Disney, USJ, Tokyo Tower, Team Labs, a lot of landmarks) and I did a lot of shopping.

Any recommendations for some more niche things to do, things the locals might enjoy?

My Japanese is limited to a few phrases if that might matter.

Thanks.

Question Luxury Flower Arrangement Recommendations.

Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone knows any flower shop recommendations? Looking to give some preserved flowers.

Besides Nicolai Bergmann, is there anything similar to their boxed flower arrangements? Price really isn't an issue, as I'd like to give it as a long term gift!

EDIT - TOKYO Location

Question Is Chiikawa market in Tokyo station so crowded that you have to wait for a bit?

I am going to go to Chiikawa land in Tokyo station and Nagano market at Ginza. But I have maybe 5 hours of time to look around all these shops. I might go to these early next year when the craze from the movie dies down, but even if you get there now, would you have to wait for a while? maybe for about 1~2 hours waiting in a queue?

Recommendations If you had to choose one: Kyoto National Garden vs Kyoto Botanical Garden?

If you only had time for one, which would you choose and why?

I am aware of the difference in "style." National garden is more like an outdoor park, while Botanical has controlled indoor greenhouses

Which would you choose and why? thank you <3

Question Shirakawa-go from Kanazawa (via Toyoma)?

Looks like I am out of luck for the Shirakawa-go lottery from Kanazawa in November. An alternative I saw was to take the Shinkansen from Kanazawa to Toyoma and then a bus from Toyoma to Shirakawa-go. It looks like the bus from Toyoma has seats. Has anybody done it this way instead of the direct bus from Kanazawa?

Recommendations things I would skip on a second trip to japan

I just got back from 2 weeks and the list of stuff i wouldd skip is longer than i expected (not hating on anything btw, just what wasn’t worth it for us)

takeshita street was the big one as it’s only about 350 m long but it was so packed in the afternoon that we spent most of it shuffling instead of looking at anything and we went because every video said to and i would have been just as happy walking cat street and the back streets of ura harajuku.

teamlab planets also same story, tickets were like 4,000 yen each and it took us about an hour.

I am most annoyed about how we kept changing hotels and dragging bags around so next time i would use fewer bases and ship the suitcase between cities, which you can do from the airport or hotel desk (roughly 2,500 yen a bag from tokyo to kyoto and arrives the next day). also i spent way too long comparing flights on google flights, rift flights and skyscanner and the difference came down to which airline had the better baggage rules

And something you should skip is wandering yanaka and an evening in shimokitazawa,i think people over plan the temples and under plan the random neighborhoods.

what would you skip if you went again?

A random idea popped up in my head, to bring maybe like one pair of socks, and buy the famous Family Mart socks when i land there. I can save a couple of grams for my luggage!😬 Anything you guys recommend?😅
