Starting Your Invisalign Journey: Essentials & Helpful Tips

Welcome to the beginning of your Invisalign or alternative aligner journey! Whether you're just starting out or contemplating beginning, it's natural to have questions. This guide aims to tackle common inquiries, share valuable resources, recommend essential products, and offer advice. However, please note that this guide does not cover everything.

Before diving in, we urge new members to familiarize themselves with our subreddit rules to avoid any confusion over removed posts or comments and the need to contact moderators.

Consulting Your Orthodontist:

Always consult your orthodontist if you're uncertain about any aspect of your treatment. It's crucial to rely on their expertise for your specific treatment plan.

Orthodontist vs. Dentist:

An orthodontist is a specialized dentist who has undergone additional training in teeth alignment. While some dentists can manage aligner treatments, orthodontists are generally recommended for their specialized expertise.

Finding an Orthodontist for Invisalign:

You can use Invisalign's website to locate nearby providers. Remember, the number of cases an orthodontist has completed (VIP indicator) doesn't necessarily reflect their skill level.

When considering treatment, consult with multiple orthodontists to discuss costs, treatment plans, expected outcomes, timelines, and retainer costs. Ensure you inquire about emergency procedures.

Choose an orthodontist based not only on comfort with the cost and treatment plan but also on confidence in their care.

Essentials After Receiving Your First Trays:

Upon starting treatment, we recommend acquiring the following items, which significantly aid in the process:

  • Ultrasonic Cleaner: Essential for keeping trays & retainers clean.
  • Denture Cleaner Tablets / Invisalign Cleaner: For optimal cleaning results.
  • Ortho Key / PulTool: Especially useful in the initial stages for easy aligner removal.
  • Chewies: Aid in ensuring aligners fit properly.
  • Invisalign/Retainer Case: To safely store your aligners.
  • Travel Pack: Includes essentials for aligner care on the go.
  • Research After Treatment Retainer Options: Consider post-treatment needs early on.

Ultrasonic Cleaner Recommendations:

We've tested various models to recommend the best fit for our community members. Our top picks include:

  • iSonic DS180(B): Offers portability with a battery option, starting at $49.95.
  • ZimaDental Dental Pod: Aesthetically pleasing and effective, priced around $99.99.
  • iSonic F3900: A budget-friendly option with reliable performance, starting at $44.95.

Ortho Key / PulTool Tips:

The PulTool is our top recommendation for easy aligner removal, especially in the early stages. It's affordable and can be included in your travel kit. A discount code "r/Invisalign" offers 15% off for our community.

Chewies and Retainer Cases:

Chewies are great for ensuring your aligners fit snugly. If you opt for the PulTool, it also functions as a chewie. For retainer cases, we suggest sticking with the ones provided by your orthodontist or considering those offered by PulTool.

After Treatment Retainer Options:

As you approach the end of your Invisalign journey, it's crucial to think about maintaining your new smile. SportingSmiles has emerged as a standout option for post-treatment retainers, offering a convenient and effective solution for those looking to secure their teeth alignment long-term or for those looking for an affordable retainer replacement option.

SportingSmiles offers a DIY impression kit for post-treatment retainers, which have proven to be durable and well-fitting, sometimes even preferred over orthodontist-provided ones. SportingSmiles also offers you the ability to keep your mold on file so you have access to QUICK replacements should the need arise, the replacements also come with a discount, making it the cheapest option we have found.

SportingSmiles retainers start at an accessible price point of just $120, making it an economical choice without compromising on quality. This pricing structure is particularly appealing for individuals seeking high-quality retainers without the steep costs often associated with traditional orthodontic avenues.

Start your Invisalign journey informed and prepared with these tips and recommendations. Remember, each step forward is a move towards a perfect smile!

Question Has anyone received this type of retainer?

How long did it take to get used to it? My teeth are soooo sore. Confused why they are sore since my scans were literally taken of my teeth after finishing treatment and i wore my clear retainer non stop until this retainer was made for me.

Edit for those asking:

Please find attached photos of my teeth at the beginning of Invisalign and after my final tray. Next step is to whiten them and get edge bonding on my four middle top teeth. Took me so long to get to this point!

Question Permanent wire retainer — is it worth getting?

My dentist recommended getting a permanent wire behind my teeth at the end of my treatment to prevent any slight movement, as well as wearing a removable retainer.

For anyone who has one, would you recommend it? Is it comfortable, and do you notice it much? Also, do you have to keep the wire for the rest of your life?

Would love to hear your experiences and any pros/cons!

Treatment Progress About halfway through aligners

Tray 17/37, about halfway done. Crazy before, orthodontist said the teeth are tracking well up to this point, I had an attachment removed for some reason. The canines are a bit tricky but coming down fairly nicely. Looking forward to this being done but don’t mind them.

That said, once you get used to them, they really aren’t that bad.

Question Halloween vampire teeth glued to trays??

What are the odds yall think I could use like denture glue on my Invisalign to attach vampire teeth to them? I was thinking of just fully glueing them on bc I’m changing to my next trays two days after Halloween but ideally denture glue would still come off??

Next ortho appointment is in two weeks after the final tray!
I hope she says I’m done !! My Anterior open bite was closed in about 4 months and the rest has been working on alignment especially on the lower arch.
It’s a pain dealing with trays and brushing etc. , but I’m at the point now that I’d say it has been worth it so far , I did go through a phase where I missed my old smile , but now I’m getting more used to it. What do you all think?

Question Ultrasonic cleaner

• Upvotes

I’m on week 2 and really need another way to clean the aligners besides brushing them. I’m low on money and wondering how the cleaning tablets vs the ultrasonic cleaner machine work and what is worth it.

General Aesthetics instead of functionality

• Upvotes

Has anyone done Invisalign for aesthetics only? Not to fix your bite? Or will anyone even do that? Every time I have a dentist they say oh you should do Invisalign, so I go for a consult and I end up being told to have jaw surgery, and full braces, etc. I am in my 40s and I don't want to do all of that. I know my bite is messed up but I feel like I could have my top and bottom teeth straightened enough that it would make me feel better about my smile. I don't want to be walking around with a full mouth of metal braces for two years and I'm definitely not having my jaw relocated

Hi All before and after pics. Pretty happy with how the top have straightened up but was hoping for a better result at the bottom. Do you think with refinements they will be able to get the bottom much straighter? My next appointment is to decide if I want refinements or taken off. I’m thinking definitely refinements, would you say I could get refinements at the top and bottom? Thanks in advance!

Question Marathon training and Invisalign

Hi, I’m on my first week of a 2 year journey with Invisalign but I also run marathons. The dilemma is fueling on longer training runs. I’m running 5 days a week. Some runs exceed 4 hours.

I’m hoping to get some feedback from others who have done this. How did you manage your trays and fueling? Do you take it out for hours at a time to run, or find a way to leave them in and eat / use electrolights on runs with the trays in?

Question Tell me everything as a first timer

Post image
8 Upvotes

Set up to get my first set of trays next week.

I will be straightening my teeth before placing the implant in the missing molar spot. im in my 30s and have waited my whole life for this! as a kid that never had any decent dental care after about 13 years old, i have invested thousands in fillings, crowns, a root canal, and now finally the fun part....a straight smile i can be proud of. Can yall help me with:

  1. Im an office worker. i am fortunate enough to have my own office. buuut i am also used to eating my breakfast at work (wake up at 4 am so im starving by the time i get in) i also usually drink a protein shake, and of course eat lunch. tips and tricks to keep my liners clean while in office?

  2. i am paying a ton ~6k for this out of pocket. so i really want it to work. tell me the good the bad and the ugly experiences with invisalign!

  3. I did request a quote for invisalign, but he told me he would have issues with the attachments being placed on my crowns (i have 4) so i think he steered me torwards (clear correct?) they have the attachments on the liners themselves. does anyone have any information on this brand? Is it the same?

  4. After stalking this subreddit, I have a sense of impending doom like i should have requested braces. Does anyone have experience with braces + several crowns or root canal? is it possible? should i switch before its too late?

  5. I want to build a starter pack. so far, i have retainer bright, ultrasonic cleaner, ortho key, chewies and those little mini toothbrushes for when im in a pinch. What else should I get?

  6. Im on the road or in office from 6 Am - 4 PM, so I really need to have a good set up for work/travel.

Thank you everyone!!!!

Treatment Start Did my orthodontist destroy the surface of my teeth??

Thumbnail

Just started; after curing the attachments, he used the electric tool to buzz off the extra bonding agent or glue I guess but now the surface of my teeth look all scratched up like someone took steel wool to stainless steel! I don’t know how else to describe what I’m seeing but I’m so worried that my teeth won’t be smooth and will have all these etch marks that resemble a toddlers scribbling 😭
Any advice or has anyone else had this happen?

Question Is this normal?

Post image

Started January 2025, and still ongoing.

Do these aligners look as they should to you? Top set - nearly all my aligners have had slight gaps underneath around my two front teeth and those either side of them but when visiting the orthodontist he’s never raised concerns.

Thanks in advance 🙂

Question Two orthos, two different treatment plans - Invisalign for posterior crossbite due to narrow jaw?

I went to 2 orthodontist consultations and got 2 different treatment plans. Unilateral posterior crossbite as an adult. My jaw clicks when I open wide. No Ortho as a child. I'm not so concerned about aesthetics since I think my smile is generally fine, just preventing future jaw and tooth issues when I'm older.

Option 1 includes MARPE + Invisalign and is very expensive. They told me my upper jaw/palate is too narrow (a couple of mm) and would benefit from expansion.

Option 2 said I could get away with Invisalign + elastics. They said my mouth size is fine and since it's only on 1 side and I don't have breathing issues that Invisalign would be sufficient.

Both stated that my jaw closing/positioning is shifted because of the crossbite (or along those lines, sorry, memory isn't perfect).

Has anyone had success with just Invisalign for posterior crossbite due to their jaw size?

Question Rescan but Still Changing Trays

My initial order of trays fit good everywhere except the top tray was kind of “bouncy” in the front according to the ortho. They rescanned and had me keep progressing in what I have but changing at 10 days instead of 7. Anyone else had this? Do they just find the tray that kind of corresponds to where you are at in the new batch when they arrive since you have progressed since the scan?

Question Need advice

I have been doing Invisalign since last August/September. I just finished my first trays of refinement the end of this September I’m still not thrilled with the results. When I went to my dentist, I was told he’s moving ~2 hours from me, so there’s no feasible way I could continue to be his patient. After that visit, him and his staff told me I’m going to get a full refund (about $3,000). I’m now stuck trying to find an orthodontist, and when I called my original Invisalign dentist for some of my treatment files, I was told I “may not get the refund” so now I’m scrambling trying to find treatment again AND potentially need to pay and additional $3,000. The new orthodontist I visited today told me it’s looking like I’ll need regular braces for another 18 months. I’m just completely devastated and lost. I’m going for a second opinion in a few weeks but I’m basically in limbo. Any advice would be so appreciated. Has anyone else been in this position before? ☹️
