Need tips for keeping velvet worm

• Upvotes

Hi, I reciently got my hands on my very first velvet worm! I've had it for a few days now but I stupidly put it in a terrarium with a lot, and I mean a lot of hiding spots. I haven't seen it since but have found signs of predation here and there so I assume it's out and hunting when the lights go off.

I've accepted that I won't see it much at all but I want to make sure I minimize possible ways it could die so any knowledge or experiences you may have with keeping them would be great. I'm interested in knowing about failures as well as success stories with these amazing little animals.

For context, I am not certain about the species it bellongs to but I know it's at the very least from the genus Oroperipatus. It's about a cm wide and 12 cm in length. It is living in a big terrarium with automatic sprinklers, crickets sizes T1 to T4, an abundance of isopods, a few termites and a bunch of other stuff. It is the only predator in the system. Sprinklers go off for a few seconds every hour making it be humid constantly but there are dry areas around the top of the stump and everything inbetween. I've had it set up like this for at least 2 years. There was a small water feature that I've since drained and covered with sponge as I've heard these animals are experts at drowning themselves andd um I think that's honestly it.

I'm breeding superworms, but still want to give the bugs the best life possible. So today they are getting fresh digs with climbing structure and hides.

How to mist my Philippine leaf insect?

Hi all, I have a beautiful leaf insect nymph on its way to me in a few days, and I have the tank coming tomorrow. After which I'll procure, clean and trim some bramble and set up the rest of the environment.

The only thing I'm not sure about is the misting. I'm assuming I cannot use tap water as it may have chemicals in it, but what would I look for when purchasing dechlorinated water? My search results seem to be for fish only. Are there pre-filled spray bottles with the correct water? I have not yet bought the misting bottle so I'm open to being able to purchase them together.

Where do you guys get your water from?

Thanks!

Hornworms Won’t Pupate

Post image
1 Upvotes

I had about ten tobacco hornworms that were all around the same age. Most of them all went through the same stages (stopped eating, dorsal line, puking, wandering) and then burrowed down into the substrate to pupate. These two circled ones are acting very odd. They have gone through all the stages but now won’t go down and are moving very oddly if at all. Their bodies are starting to get stiff and their dorsal line isn’t really pulsating anymore. Anything I can do to help them? Any ideas on what the problem might be?

Where do yall get your bugs the reptile expo near me used to have a ton but they moved locations and it kinda sucks now it was already small now it’s tiny mostly crested geckos and 3d prints and my local pet store doesn’t really get many mostly OBTs so my only in person options are Petco/smart witch I know aren’t the best but I’ve got bugs from them before.

Gendering hissing roach nymphs?

Hello everyone! I’m wondering if anyone could help me gender these baby Madagascar hissing cockroaches? They’re my second ever invert pet (I have an African giant millipede that I love dearly her name is Sally) and I only got them last night, got them from the feeder insect section of a Petco and they looked a little rough and I fell in love. One of them has a broken antenna so I’m keeping on eye on that. They’re sharing a lot of stuff from my millipede so they have a thin layer of reptisoil, some hardwood mulch and leaf litter, fresh veggies, and some cat kibble as well as a cuttlebone. They also have an egg carton piece and a TP roll for hiding and chilling.

I’m just wondering if anyone can help me gender them? I know that it’s a bit easier to gender them if you look at the underside of their abdomen but I don’t want stress them out as again I only got them yesterday. This isn’t urgent, I just want to name them as soon as I can!!

hey all, I need help!

Edit: help no longer needed, definitely eggs, separated all of them and also separated the male moth from the female.

I'm pretty sure my moths (manduca sexta, Carolina Sphinx) just laid eggs. This is great because it's what I was hoping for (so I don't have to spend more on more cats) but I actually have no idea what to do... I know I'm not keeping all of them. But for the ones I'm definitely keeping, how do I raise them? And is it safe to transfer them from the mesh tent back into the tank I use for my cats? (Also how do I sex the moths so I can separate them?)

Sea Spider - epic rare find

Not many photos out there of this invert! I was super stoked to find this in my saltwater reef tank! (They are usually considered pests because they eat my zoanthid corals, but I'm a biology nerd and was super stoked to see it)

They're an invertebrate that is verrrry distant relatives of land spiders. This one is commonly referred to as the zoanthid eating sea spider. A marine arthropod belonging to the Pycnogonida class. I don't know the exact scientific name / ID of this particular species of zoanthid eating sea spider.

I just thought I would share!!

is 68F too cold for BDFBs?

my partner would like to get me an invert pet for my birthday! i’d love to get some blue death feigning beetles, but we keep our house at a constant 68 degrees fahrenheit year-round. everywhere i look says “room temp” or 70 degrees - does 2 degrees make that big of a difference for them? i know they’ll SURVIVE, but will they slow down?

also, does anyone have specific advice about lowering humidity? i’m in the midwest, so it’s decently humid in my house (around 50%).

i do still have a ceramic heat emitter from when i had a crested gecko if that may help! i just prefer not to run it if at all possible. i’m also considering a north american species of millipede instead (probably narceus americanus)

Does anyone know where I could find a list of inverts that are legal to own in FL?

I really wanted some male hissing cockroaches or blue death feigning beetles but they’re illegal 😭💔
