Discussion if they wanted this tv show to succeed in the future...

Suggestion of TV Series “Ink Master” show formatting.

Lose the previous ideas of flash challenges that are not tattoo related.

Lose the concept of coaches and teams, this should be a one-on-one ruthless competition.

Restrict judging to “must meet” the daily Skill of the day (composition, adaptability etc)

Host has no reason to be a judge if odd number of judges are present.

Exception: unless the need of a tie breaker and host should be last, not first, to speak before judges.

Consider adding one Guest Judges, that have expertise in Style of the day.

Entrance Elimination Challenge:

24 Contestants should be more picked in a spectrum such as:

More than 10 years, more than 5, less than 10, and less than 5 years' experience tattooing.

8 contestants should be picked in each group.

Each group of 8, in a 4 Hour tattoo challenge of their choice.

Half get eliminate and half will go to completion, each 8 is judged on [total of 6 x [1-10pts]]

Style, composition, quality, completeness, line work, shading and/or color application.

Competition

Each Round of the competition will be broken down in the following:

Skill of the day to be defined, see list below

Signature Flash Challenge: [1-10pts] 90mins

• Flash card tattoo, Artist choice of line work

• Winner of flash challenge, assigns the skull in Technical Challenge

Technical Challenge: [1-10pts] 4 hours timed. (list below)

• Tattoo line work provided by judge x3.

• Location identical for all canvas and cannot be changed.

• Judged on Style , quality of lines, shading, colour etc.

• NB: failure to do meet style of the day equates to an automatic -7pts penalty on score.

Show Stopper: [1-10pts] 6 hours Timed

• Must Meet the Skill of the Day

• Any Style, Any Location, canvas defined.

Each end of day all contestants are tallied up on their earned points

i.e. Flash + Technical + Show Stopper = Points of the day

Revealed Top Artist of the day = Gets to choose the style of the next day

Reveal three bottom artists of the day then, eliminating the lowest scored one.

Rince and repeat until 6 contestants are left

Semi Final Elimination 6 go in, 3 come out.

Head to head semi final round Robbin

Highest scoring contestant (total accumulated points this far) chooses whom they want to call out

Lowest of the two scoring contestant select style and subject, then they get to call out someone.

Same rules apply again until each have called out someone as well has chosen a style and subject

Once 6 hours have past the contestant that got call out has to tattoo their own style and subject in another 6 hours tattoo.

Judging will be side by side, best moves on.

Finale

24 Hours tattoo any style any subject

12 hours technical tattoo selected by judges of 3

6 hours tattoo selected by season voting of public on style, subject and technical. (poll online)

Suggested Skill of the Day (difficulty order to be defined)

– Composition – Contrast – Precision – Adaptability – Fundamentals – Details – Color Theory – Freehand/Artistry - Shading – Proportion - Consistensy – Creativity.

Technical Challenge Styles (incomplete list of course)

 – American traditional – Grey and Black – Colour – Japanese – Japanese Traditional – New School – Metallic – Bio-Mech – Neo Traditional – Minimalist – Fine Line – Line Art – Watercolor – Dot Work – Geometric – Negative Space – Tribal – Portrait – Surrealism – Anime – Trash Polka – Realism – Illustrative

Question Does Ink master more money from Youtube than they get from Paramount+?

I started watching Ink Master from YouTube clips, and I have no idea how Paramount determines a show's profitability. But their most-viewed video shows the full challenge, from when they announce what the challenge is to the critics, but now they've mostly just been doing complications. Like, I get that they don't want to reveal the full episode to make people watch it on Paramount+. But a year after the season drops, I think anyone who wanted to watch it has already done so, and people who don't care enough to get a subscription won't, so you might as well post the full challenges on YouTube to squeeze as much revenue as you can from content that you've already filmed and edited as you can. And you never know; the video might go viral and bring more people to Paramount+.

Discussion Kelly that's not how people pray.

The canvas of this tattoo kept asking her to lower the hands and she kept rejecting it, even when the canvas at first was also wrong because nobody prays with their hands on their belly, those hands she drew are still wrong, nobody puts them on the side of their chin, they should be between the breast and under her chin.

I think that's bad work and it was supposed to be redemption, that poor canvas probably regret it when he got back home.

Discussion More Anthony appreciation

When he said right before the finale "I've never been this sure about anything in my life" and he gives a 100 yard stare across a pool table. It was at that moment I KNEW he was going to win. Cleen was on the ropes and was shook up. Before this point I thought Anthony was just gorgeous and had a fresh outlook. And was skilled way beyond the couple years of experience he had. If I had this dude in my life I don't think I'd ever take another Xanax. Anthony if you're reading this when I watch the show with my sons anytime you come on the screen I say "when a real man is talking, we listen."

Does anyone else love how Dave calls everyone "buddy"? He's the only judge that doesn't make me feel like I need a shower after watching them.

Discussion Season 4

Post image
117 Upvotes

Season 4 may be my favorite season of ink master. I think they caught the tiger by the tail somehow with chemistry of the contestants. A lot of the faces in this season became permanent fixtures for the franchise, and it also had some of its strongest artists, great guest judges, interesting flash challenges, and then the normal drama with the Kyle dunbar explosion slowly building in this season, even if it didn't erupt till later. Also the mythical tattoo artist with no tattoos lol

The only thing I don't like about this season was the winner Scott marshall. Not only did he act like the stereotypical disney schoolyard bully but he also looked like one lol. I really liked matti and halo, and thought they were very talented artists, but I didn't like them when they would team up with Scott. I think it was tactical because it seemed like the judges were gonna just cream all over whatever he turned in. Did anyone else find him the most off putting aspect in an otherwise great season?

Discussion Nick D'Angelo and his winning tattoo on redemption.

I was just watching Ink Master Redemption, and a man and his son came back because Nick D'Angelo made a crappy heart tattoo, he kept screaming that it was a winning tattoo so he didn't need redemption, and when they actually showed the tattoo it was an awful dark, patchy tattoo.

First, how did that tattoo win? Are the judges blind? And second is the ego of some tattoo artist so huge that they can't see and admit they did crappy work?

Unfortunately I couldn't find a picture online. It was done on a special episode called Cupid's Ink.

Discussion Coach Christian

Post image

What is it about the relationship between Amanda and her coach Christian that just really felt wholesome and heartfelt. His eyes would LIGHT UP if any one said anything critical of Amanda, and then he got all cracked up when she got voted off. I don't recall anyone else impacting him this much.

The way he fought for her through the season makes me think of when I defends my daughters shitty decisions..... And then tell her quietly in private how much I did not want to. I know Christian is a dad, and makes me wonder if he has daughters and Amanda was his proxy daughter in their absence. A dad only knows one thing, being dad.

Somehow even through all the debilitating anxiety he pulled off the masterstroke for the finale of putting the two against each other with photo realism, while I he got an easier category thats more palatable. True class

Discussion Erin S9 "before we came here, doom let me in on a little secret and that is he's never done a portrait before"

How in the hell did they expect to win when 1/2 of their team has never done a style that is present in almost if not all of the seasons of ink Master and to then try your first attempt at a portrait on the biggest tattooing show on TV is absolute insanity. When Oliver said dooms tattoo was Beat or whatever he said, that was a drastic understatement.

Discussion Kyle Dunbar appreciation

Post image
230 Upvotes

I just want Kyle Dunbar to get his flowers. My heart really goes out to him, and I pray that he has found a place to call his own. During covid quarantine I was just watching everything available and landed on ink master one day. It was the first season that Kyle was a contestant, and by the end of the season I was a fan, but it was the Kyle Dunbar story arc that got me emotionally invested. It was never too clear what was actually happening but he would make comments like "well I guess I'm homeless now" and " I have to do a good tattoo so that I have somewhere to sleep tonight". He was saying it nicely and with a smile, but it really touched me. I have been in that same very situation. Where it appears like everything is going great and you're healthy and productive..but it not ok..

I am 40 years old and don't have a single tattoo on my body (I'm a musician so nothing but respect for creative arts). I am about 5 foot 7 and 120 lbs soaking wet, and have been in one fight my entire life. Someone called my mother a bitch the week that my father passed away and I totally lost my temper. I hated it. I have children I shouldn't act like that, and it was very scary. I know that Chris nunez is there to cast judgement and critique art which is always tense, but it felt like he was putting extra sauce on top for Kyle Dunbar, and I just don't get it. I almost get it the second season because the blow up brought in views so I could see them trying to repeat. Why did nunez feel so determined to destroy a man who was losing everything. I would not have been surprised if he popped Chris nunezs head like a pimple. I hope it was all for show and Kyle and Nunez were holding hands and kissing backstage.

His art was unique. It wasn't the best. Just being honest here, but it had definite style. I could almost pick his tattoo out from the crowd every time. Skills and talents can be practiced and mastered. Being a good human, not so easy

Discussion Final season idea..

Since the show is, more than likely done, I have an idea for a final season.

Call it THE Ink Master. All seasonal winners, sorry Cleen and rip Scott, compete a final time for the biggest prize. $500k. All judging is done by the host and finalists from the different seasons. The elimination vote includes the totd winner.

Give it a proper send off instead of a quiet put down.

Question So, is the show done?

I haven't heard anything since the last season. I think the show would do much better if it went back to the original format.

I'm wondering on how as many times as I've seen them say about how body parts are positioned whether it's a person or an animal and yet when the ones are competing that go up against the OG's they're loving Tony's tatt of the panther. Don't get me wrong. It's a great tattoo, but please explain to me why one of the pause is facing us with the claws? The panther looks like it's climbing up the thigh, but then we have this one paw that's looking back at us. Yeah they don't even mention that. I don't care if he's an OG, to me that doesn't look right.

Question Season 14...Do I keep going??

I've watched Ink Master on and off since I was a kid. Recently, I've decided to watch the whole series from beginning to end. I have a type of OCD that will generally only let me watch one show at a time, starting at season 1 taking it all the way. I just finished season 13; the fact that they couldn't crowd a winner was a bummer, but I don't really care for the season finale episodes anyway. I just want to see the art I don't care to hear people talk about the season haha.

So now I've hit season 14 and everything is different. I got all of 5 minutes in before it feels like the set is too bright, I wish Ryan hadn't done that to her face, and the host seems a little soft compared to Dave Navarro.

I guess my question is: Is it even worth it to keep going? My job is adjacent to the tattoo industry and I'm a big fan of tattoo designs, application, and the artistry behind it all. And yet... the whole situation of season 14 makes it feel like a whole different show. I'm stressed LOL

TLDR: Should I finish the entire series or stop before I get into season 14 and I end up hating Ink Master? Please Help

Other My husband got a cover-up by Tommy Helm

I rarely go on Instagram, and this week, I opened it up, and the first video is like a six minutes old post from Tommy with my city's name on it (Peoria, AZ).

He was supposed to be in Australia, so he had unexpectedly open books at a shop 15 minutes from me. My husband has been wanting a cover-up for the last 15 years, and Tommy's video said to call or come on down. We cruised over there, one person beat us to it, we had to get back to work, so my husband messaged him on Insta, and he had a consultation the next morning.

We asked him for nautical theme, but basically whatever Tommy wanted. He spent about three hours drawing a design... by hand. No tablet. No AI. Pure art from his brain.

My husband did two back to back sessions and has a gorgeous piece now.

Tommy is a gem of a guy. Such a kind, chill, caring dude. It felt like hanging out with an old friend. We told deep dark family stories and dumb jokes.

If you're in AZ, he's got availability, strongly recommend hitting him up. Plus, the shop is super cool. Great vibes.

Discussion One of my favorite episodes

Genuinely one of the best challenges where the canvases had a design made by their loved ones with Down Syndrome. There are so many episodes that are so corny and overly dramatic so it was nice to see something that was meaningful to the canvases and the judges be so nice and positive to each contestant and their canvases.

Discussion If you were on Inkmaster, what client would you have refused to tattoo?

This is hypothetical because I’m not a tattoo artist in any sense lol. I would’ve refused to do the eyelid flash challenge in fear I would accidentally go too deep and poke into eye by accident. I would’ve probably also refused to tattoo the motorcycle girl’s Hot Rods and Choppers tattoo in Season 7. I felt bad for her but I know absolutely nothing about motorcycles like Ashley. I would’ve rather her get a tattoo that looked like her bike from an expert than fuck up.
