Feels Update #3: Infertility & pregnancy are costing me my best friend of 12 years, and now I'm terrified of going through IVF without her.
I've posted here twice before about navigating a friendship where my best friend is unexpectedly pregnant, and I'm still struggling with infertility and pregnancy loss. My first post was asking whether anyone had successfully maintained a friendship under those circumstances, and my second was about a boundary I tried to establish around pregnancy conversations.
Unfortunately, things haven't really gotten better.
After we disagreed about boundaries-not that we couldn't have them, but what they meant- I saw some things she reposted on social media about toxic friendships, pregnancy showing you who your real friends are, people not being supportive, and people who are ugly inside destroying their own lives. I don't know whether they were directed at me, but I know she has a habit of sharing passive-aggressive posts when she's upset with someone, so it seems very likely some were at least somewhat related to me and our situation. I also noticed that some were reposted while I was beginning to experience a miscarriage, just after she shared her pregnancy with me, and the others were while I was still grieving my loss and trying to figure out how to save our friendship following our recent argument.
Seeing them was incredibly painful. They made me feel judged, criticized, and like my pain is an inconvenience to her and her happiness. It made me question how comfortable I would feel being vulnerable with her going forward, because any vulnerability I share could potentially be targeted this way in a future disagreement.
Since we last spoke, and especially after seeing those, I've spent a lot of time reflecting on our friendship, the ways we've historically handled conflict, and what we each need from each other right now. I won't get into the specific details of our friendship dynamics, but I realized that I can't always be the one taking all the responsibility, making the first move, and always letting her feelings dictate where our friendship stands, especially now. And I've come to the heartbreaking realization that I don't think either of us can be the friend the other needs during these particular chapters of our lives.
She deserves to enjoy her pregnancy and motherhood without feeling like she has to manage my grief. And I need to be able to express how angry, frightened, jealous, and devastated I sometimes feel without worrying that I'm being judged or that my feelings are hurting someone I love, or like I have to offer a three-paragraph-long disclaimer and reassurance every time I have a thought that she might take personally against her or her pregnancy.
So I've decided that I need to step away from the friendship for now.
And I'm completely devastated.
This is someone who's been my best friend, my 'soul sister' for twelve years. She's the person I could say the ugly, irrational things to without having to explain that I didn't genuinely believe them or wish anyone harm. She knew who I was beyond my worst moments and could sit with me when I was miserable without trying to fix everything or feel a need to make it positive before I was ready for it to be anything but awful. The past few months have shown me that she can't be that for me right now as she's going through her own pregnancy, and honestly, when I'm trying to enjoy my life, feel like a person again, and distract myself from infertility, her pregnancy was making that extremely difficult for me for a multitude of reasons. I know I can't avoid every pregnant woman in the world, and I don't hate pregnant women, but I also know that right now, I can't be best friends with someone stepping into the experience I've made countless sacrifices and expended so much energy into over the past few years to try to get to myself.
So, now I'm preparing for IVF, something I'm already absolutely terrified of. I hate pretty much everything about the process, aside from the hope of having a baby at the end, and I won't have the one person I always imagined helping me through it. Side note: I have my reasons for feeling so strongly about IVF, and I'm working through them in therapy, hoping to eventually reach a place where the thought of treatment doesn't fill me with quite so much dread.
I have a wonderful husband, family, two therapists (one specializing in infertility), other friends, and a support group, and I'm grateful for all of them. But none of those relationships replace twelve years of friendship or the specific kind of emotional safety I had with her.
The hardest part is that I genuinely feel some relief knowing I won't constantly be anticipating pregnancy conversations or constantly worrying about how my feelings might affect her, or reassuring her that her pregnancy doesn't hurt me even though it does. But that relief comes at the cost of losing my best friend when I need her most.
And I'm so fucking angry that infertility has taken this from me, too.
I obviously know that infertility isn't solely responsible for what happened to our friendship. We're both responsible for how we've navigated an incredibly difficult situation, and some of her actions, particularly the things she reposted, have genuinely hurt me and damaged my trust.
But it's really hard not to feel like infertility has become one long marathon of taking things away from me.
It's not enough that I've spent years trying to have a baby, experienced a miscarriage, and am now facing treatment I'm terrified of. Somehow, infertility has managed to reach into nearly every other part of my life, too. My relationship with my body, my sense of security, my ability to enjoy certain milestones, my confidence, the list goes on... and now one of the most important friendships I've ever had.
I know it's more complicated than simply saying infertility took my best friend. But I can't help feeling furious that, if I weren't going through this, we probably wouldn't even be in this situation.
I just want to be a mom. I never thought that I'd have to keep losing other parts of myself and my life along the way.
I've written out what is basically a "goodbye for now" message explaining my hurt, why I'm making this decision, and how, while I need to do this for my own emotional well-being, I'm also trying to give her the space to enjoy the rest of her pregnancy and enter motherhood without feeling guilty or having to worry about making space for my grief.
I don't know whether this is goodbye forever, and part of me really hopes it isn't. But I know I need some peace before IVF, and right now, I genuinely don't know how to find that peace while maintaining the friendship.
And I hate that I'm going into IVF knowing I won't have her. I hate that I have to figure out how to navigate something so completely terrifying to me while simultaneously grieving the friendship I thought would help me through it, because I don't have anyone else like her, and the thought of doing this without her particular brand of support makes me angrier than ever.
I guess I'm not really looking for advice or for anyone to tell me whether I'm making the right decision. I've spent a lot of time thinking about it, and I know what I need to do right now (but still plan to talk to my therapist before sending anything to her).
I guess I just thought it might be helpful to hear from people who understand how much infertility can take from you beyond the obvious, and maybe from anyone who's had to face treatment after losing someone they thought would be there to support them.
I'm terrified of IVF, I'm heartbroken about my friendship, and I'm exhausted from feeling like every time I find my footing, something else gets taken away.
And I'm just really, really sad. I've cried almost every day thinking about this and how much I miss her, and I'm so angry that something I've already sacrificed so much for is costing me yet another part of my life.
I guess I could really use some reassurance that I can get through this, even without her. ❤️
