Discussion My small issue with The Ramayana

I've been observing the material released since the start. They have been updating and improving the material since the start, like there's no finished product.

I mean, they show some frames during the teaser, then they updated it in Siya Ram song. Then updated a few more frames from it in another song. They uploaded the trailer, then updated a few shots from it again in the TV spot.

It's good to take people's opinion and update your material, but that's the only thing happening. They just keep on working and working and working on the stuff, updating it constantly. Do they really have a finished product already in your hand, or are they going to keep on working till the movie release?

I fear if they'll make the initial screenings of the movie and see people finding some faults, they'll update it in the next show again. Be confident, make a finished product and show it instead of constantly refining it till the release date.

Review Dil Chahta Hai (2001) - Farhan Akhtar

What does the heart want? Why does the heart want what it wants? Why can others not reciprocate it?

The movie is a coming-of-age romance drama, where the three leads start with three different approaches to love - one who doesn't believe in it and seeks physical relationships, one who thinks he is in love with every other girl every two weeks, and one who regards love as something special, something much more than a physical act- and it explores how the sensibilities of the trio change over time.

The movie works best when it focuses on the little, cosy moments of friendship and brotherhood among the lead trio. They're funny and charming in their own ways. Akshaye fares best here, in both his acting and his character, which has real depth, with mature themes explored through him. The other two can appear archetypal at times, and the side characters are mostly one-dimensional, which is a shame given the runtime. The movie is paced well for the first two hours, but digresses in its final act, where it ditches Akshaye and Saif completely to focus on a very typical 90s/early 2000s love story in Aamir and Preity. Saif's character did not have much to show, but Akshaye's character is really hard done by in the end.

It was Farhan Akhtar's directorial debut. He brings a good story and some fresh ideas, but finds it tough to weave them all together. His heart is in the right place, but he often falls victim to the tropes of his time. For example, the shot in the subway where Aamir and Preity are separated by the door of the metro is excellent and conveys very well what they feel for each other, but then it has to be followed by a cheap scene where Preity feels unsafe in the subway, and Aamir comes to her rescue. The song 'Tanhayee' is shot very well, with Aamir also at his best, but is then followed by a very cheesy reunion.

What a fucking banger album though!

Review My thoughts on Jailer 2

Post image

spoilers ahead

the movie was a fun watch but it felt like the two halves were two different movies entirely? the set up in the first half was interesting and I was curious to see how it’s gonna connect but the immediate death and introduction of sj surya was so abrupt. The brutus dialogue sequence felt like a waste of time in hindsight. wouldve been nice if they actually made SJ surya a force to be reckoned with because from jailer 1 it's obvious that muthu has a lot of tricks up his sleeve and thaat he's always 4 steps ahead. the only thing he didn't anticipate was the narasimha hospital kidnapping and bodhi finding out about his son which didn't really seem to have major consequences, just a plot line that moves things forward to get him where he needs to be. if muthu actually faced downfalls that set him back meaningfully, then every win after that point would be a bigger win. a formidable enough opponent raises the stakes. Here, it felt like the kaplan family was big in terms of wealth and manpower, but not formidable enough as a foe.

in jailer one, he had to steal the CROWN to get his son back. what are the stakes here really?
the audience didn't even get enough time to sit with his family getting captured, or them dying without knowing the truth about the son. the stakes felt lower than it did in the first movie.

oh and the BGM was played to death. im so surprised that there's not one memorable song from this movie.

While the movie was a fun watch and it was interesting to see Rajni on the big screen without major fight scenes and casually aura farming, a lot more could’ve been done with the film.

Review Watched jailer 2 with wrong context

Watched jailer 2 yesterday and during the whole movie i kept confusing coolie as its prequel (jailer) and thought varman was Nagarjuna.

Saw a post on Instagram something about the fee of the starcast of jailer and jailer 2 and realised i haven't watched jailer and saw jailer 2 as a sequel to coolie, no wonder it wasn't making sense and the story was not lining up.

I thought maybe because of Hindi dubbing its happening the story not lining but ohh so stupid i was.

But now got the opportunity to watch jailer as a prequel.

AskIndianCinema Was KV right choice afterall for Ramayana?

Post image

Only thing I find misfit about Ramayana movie is it's lyricist...Kumar Vishwas may be good at poetry but writing film songs is different....

You can't just take some verses from different scriptures, 5-6 words here and there to rhyme and make a song...words in all the songs that came out yet feel underwhelming especially when compared to original verses like "Achyutam keshamvam" and" shiv Tandav Stotram" used in the same songs...lyrics feel short to convey the weight of music and visuals..

Let me know what you think

Discussion I am glad no filmmaker has touched mahabharata till now

(Ps- ik the serial exist but i am talking about a proper cinematic project)

I've always felt that adapting the Mahabharata into a truly great cinematic universe would be one of the most ambitious projects Indian cinema could attempt, but I wonder whether the industry is ready for it. The epic is far too vast and morally complex to be told as one person's story or squeezed into a few films. It would require years of planning, an exceptionally strong script, and a clear vision for dividing its interconnected stories into a format that does justice to every major character. One idea I find interesting is adapting the pre-war politics, rivalries and family drama as a prestige web series, then transitioning into multiple theatrical films beginning with the Bhagavad Gita and covering the Kurukshetra War and its aftermath. But where should the story actually begin — Karna's birth, Bhishma's vow, or the Pandavas' arrival at the centre of the conflict? Where should it end? Which version of the epic should be followed, given the differences between textual traditions and retellings? And how do you make each instalment satisfying on its own while preserving the larger narrative? I feel this would be a generational project requiring extraordinary writing, long-term planning and a level of commitment rarely seen in Indian cinema. How would you approach adapting the Mahabharata, and do you think such a project is realistically possible today?

(I have used chatgpt in framing the para)

Discussion Title: I enjoyed Jailer 2 more, but Ranabaali left a deeper impact on me

Post image
0 Upvotes

Honestly, I enjoyed Jailer 2 more as a theatrical experience. Watching Rajini outsmart the antagonists, those slow-motion elevations, and Anirudh absolutely cooking with the BGM was a different high altogether. I had a blast watching it.

But when it comes to performances, storytelling, and the content itself, I feel Ranabaali is better.

While watching Ranabaali, I genuinely felt like I was in a trance. The performances and the portrayal of the atrocities pulled me into the film emotionally. There were moments when I could feel my emotions bursting out, and my hatred for the British Empire intensified as I watched what was happening on screen.

And honestly, I think this is VDK's best performance yet. Some might argue that Arjun Reddy was his finest, and I can understand why people hold that performance in such high regard. But for me, it's a bit of an on-and-off debate. Ranabaali gave me a different impression of him as a performer, and I personally feel this is his strongest work so far.

Jailer 2 gave me the high I wanted from a Rajini film. Ranabaali made me feel something much deeper.

That's also why I'm sad that Ranabaali doesn't seem to be getting the numbers and recognition I feel it deserves. I can't help wondering whether the negative PR and the existing hatred toward VDK are affecting its reception. Of course, I can't say that's the sole reason, and criticism of the film itself is completely fair. I just wish people could separate their opinions about an actor from the work being presented on screen.

You can enjoy one film more and still acknowledge that another has stronger performances, better storytelling, or a greater emotional impact.

For me, that's exactly what happened with these two films.

What do you guys think? Is Ranabaali VDK's best performance yet? And have you ever enjoyed one film more while believing another was the better piece of cinema?
