Question Outsiders built rockets and AI. Why not cures? I want to build a startup for incurable diseases, starting with HIV
Rockets, self-driving cars and AI get most of the attention and venture capital. Meanwhile, diseases like HIV still have no widely available cure, even though we can control them.
HIV shows the problem. Antiretroviral therapy stops the virus from multiplying, but a small hidden reservoir of "sleeping" viral DNA stays inside long-lived immune cells (about 1 in a million CD4 T cells). It can't be seen or reached, so treatment is lifelong. As I understand it, the bottleneck is waking or silencing every sleeping copy, then clearing those cells safely.
My background is mixed:
Finance: grew up around a family business and the stock market.
Tech: Bachelor's and Master's degrees.
Biology: self-taught out of curiosity, on top of 11th-12th grade bio.
Startups: worked in 3 startups, and I create content.
I'm not a biologist or a lab scientist, and I know biotech is slower and harder than building rockets. My plan is to learn the science properly, raise patient capital, and partner with scientists who know HIV and immunology.
I'd like honest feedback on:
Is this realistic for an outsider, and which role fits best (funder, founder, partner)?
Which research areas look most promising or neglected?
Are any scientists or biotech founders open to talking?
Please correct me where I'm wrong. I'm here to learn.
