Party building, how much should I consider the 6th slot in my team?
Greetings
I'm going to play IWDEE, but coming from BG1EE I'm feeling a tiny bit overwhelmed having to roll a whole squad compared to 1 custom dude and a rotating selection of companions. Even after planning the party I'd like to use, I ended up with a bit of decision paralysis.
The pillars of my party are:
- Bard, Half-Elf
Will get all the scrolls I find, not sure about proficiencies but I don't think they'll matter much, since they'll be mostly singing with the occasional spell, so I guess whatever weapon has defensive version plus bows
- Avenger, Elf
Avenger gets more shapeshifting forms and extra spells, the STR penality is inconsequential since they'll polymorph into a giant spider during scraps. For weapon pips I suppose the usual scimitar/club and sling, followed by whatever fighting style works best with a polymorphed character
- Paladin, probably Cavalier
Undead Hunter may be better, but I like to have Lay on Hands available for some emergency/extra healing. Weapon pips on longswords, flails and then I suppose dualwielding?
- Dragon Disciple
Not sure if Elf for more DEX, or Half-Elf for more CON, probably the latter.
Won't have to compete for scrolls, and with the "free" spell selection I'd like to set this up so the character can be focused around Polymorph Self, self-buffs and such.
Dagger proficiency, want to be Lawful Evil so they can read the Find Familiar scroll and get an imp for mustard jelly pet during fights
And now, for the remaining party slots:
I'd like to add a kitted thief, of any sort, mostly because BG1 drowns you in unkitted thief companions (and a few multi-class ones), either as Half-Orc for that 19 STR, or human so I can dual class it out in case I get bored of its playstyle.
Now, I'd stop at 5 party members, but I've realized that with this setup I miss out on a side-tank or archer role (I'm missing on a cleric too, but I don't think it matters much with a single class druid and paladin on the party). I've been considering either roll the thief as Swashbuckler with two pips in longbows, have the thief dual as fighter, roll a poison archer blackguard, or a gnome barbarian (mostly to get use of that fancy midget helmet). But I'm open to suggestions.
What are your opinions about all of this?
