meta/community Poll on Banning Post Types

There have been several popular posts recently suggesting that more posts should be removed. The mod team's response has generally been "Those posts aren't against the rules - what rule are you suggesting we add?"

Still, we understand the frustration. This has always been a "catch all" sub for IT related posts, but that doesn't necessarily mean we shouldn't have stricter standards. Let us know in the poll or comments what you would like to see.

11 Change nothing, the current rules are good.
3 Just ban all meme/joke posts.
10 Just ban tech support posts (some or all).
2 Just ban "advice" requests (some or all).
22 Just ban/discourage low effort posts, in general.
11 Ban a combination of these things, or something else.

Some steps for getting into IT

We see a lot of questions within the r/IT community asking how to get into IT, what path to follow, what is needed, etc. For everyone it is going to be different but there is a similar path that we can all take to make it a bit easier.

If you have limited/no experience in IT (or don't have a degree) it is best to start with certifications. CompTIA is, in my opinion, the best place to start. Following in this order: A+, Network+, and Security+. These are a great place to start and will lay a foundation for your IT career.

There are resources to help you earn these certificates but they don't always come cheap. You can take CompTIA's online learning (live online classroom environment) but at $2,000 USD, this will be cost prohibitive for a lot of people. CBT Nuggets is a great website but it is not free either (I do not have the exact price). You can also simply buy the books off of Amazon. Fair warning with that: they make for VERY dry reading and the certification exams are not easy (for me they weren't, at least).

After those certifications, you will then have the opportunity to branch out. At that time, you should have the knowledge of where you would like to go and what IT career path you would like to pursue.

I like to stress that a college/university degree is NOT necessary to get into the IT field but will definitely help. What degree you choose is strictly up to you but I know quite a few people with a computer science degree.

Most of us (degree or not) will start in a help desk environment. Do not feel bad about this; it's a great place to learn and the job is vital to the IT department. A lot of times it is possible to get into a help desk role with no experience but these roles will limit what you are allowed to work on (call escalation is generally what you will do).

Please do not hesitate to ask questions, that is what we are all here for.

I would encourage my fellow IT workers to add to this post, fill in the blanks that I most definitely missed.

Redacted all PII and specific company information.

I know this extreme redacting is a buzz kill but I’m just moving carefully.

Phew. Not life changing money but I have worked so, so hard man. What a strange roller coaster the IT world has been so far. I hope everyone here is having a great week and getting big wins.

Old role title was System Administrator.

opinion Is it normal at the start to keep making mistakes?

I’m only a month or two into my first IT job. It’s a small MSP and we work with dental offices. So 50% tickets for softwares for dental stuff. 50% responsibilities, which are WSUS, nakivo, hamachi, exsi setups, so on.

Yes I made a post recently….

I feel that everyday my manager finds something to yell at me for, it’s really busy right now stress is high and tasks are non stop. Swarm of tickets and so many new clients we are setting up.

But it’s getting to me, not because it’s busy but because I’m getting railed everyday about something. Very small things but I’m new to it all…..

I genuinely worry I’ll get fired lol. It’s like I can do 10 things good but occasionally two I get wrong, I get yelled at for.

I’ve been a manager before In my previous profession. I know how to train people. My manager is definitely is acting a bit shitty but I’m so worried that he’s going to let me go for dumb shit

jobs and hiring I just finished college with a bachelor's degree in IT and haven't gotten any interviews. I have an A+. Will getting more certifications help me land a help desk, support or sys admin, etc. job in Atlanta, Georgia? Do you recommend Security+, CCNA, AWS cert, Azure Windows Server cert, etc.?

opinion What is your pay rate in this job market?

• Upvotes

Genuine question for people working in IT, especially those with 2–5 years of experience:

What salary and benefits would you consider reasonable for someone with a bachelor’s degree, industry certifications, and nearly 2.5 years of professional IT experience?

My experience: 2 almost 2.5 years experience in infrastructure support, desk side support, traveling tech

City minimum wage: 19-20

I’ve received offers in the $20–$26/hour range with extremely limited or no PTO, health insurance, or paid holidays, often framed as strong opportunities to gain experience.

I’d appreciate hearing how others evaluate compensation at this stage of their careers. What salary ranges, benefits packages, and job titles would you consider appropriate in today’s market, particularly in high-cost-of-living areas?

opinion Why am I so afraid of making a mistake or causing an outage?

For those over 55 and in IT.. is it me or is it my job? I’m so afraid of causing an outage on the job. I’ve been doing this stuff for dozens of years but am getting old. Some of it has to do with using automation instead of good ol’ fashioned cli. Scripts that I know I tried before (that I didn’t write) but know they worked for one device, will it be safe on another? How come others are so confident to use them? Then there’s the management. If even a planned outage goes perfectly and one app had to be restarted by someone who was missed in the verification they penalize you for it. A full inquiry and many meetings later to make sure it never happens again. All my mistakes seem to be magnified by mgmt. They don’t bother training me. The only training I get is if a new hire comes in and I complain to get the same exposure he gets. The feeling that maybe someone will come to the conclusion that I’m not fit for the job anymore. Does anyone else have these issues?

meta/community Microsoft replacing their support reps with AI?

Today I got a call from an M365 support rep regarding an issue that I was having, and I let him know he can close the ticket. He then let me know that if it needs to be reopened he won't be around anymore because they're all getting replaced with AI. Idk if this is one call center, or Microsoft's entire 365 support operation or what, but getting a call and support from an AI is very off-putting to me and probably rough to deal with in any kind of complex situation.

Anyone else hear of anything like this?

help request What are some good books for networking?

I’m currently working as a field technician and I didn’t realize 90% of my calls were going to be networking related so obviously I’m out of my depth and I want to fix that so I can be a better worker and all around more knowledgeable technician. Do you all have any book recommendations? I really want to learn all that I can about networking.

meta/community What’s an everyday problem you wish someone would build better software for?

What’s an everyday problem you wish someone would build better software for?

Hi everyone, I’ve recently started an IT business, and I’m interested in building software that helps people with the practical frustrations of everyday life.

I’d like to hear about things you find harder or more time-consuming than they should be. It could be keeping on top of bills, organising family schedules, dealing with paperwork, or something specific to your situation.

What’s a task you regularly put off because it’s a hassle? How do you handle it at the moment, and what would make it easier?

I’d also be interested in hearing about apps you’ve tried that haven’t quite worked for you, whether they’re too complicated, too expensive, or missing something useful.

You don’t need to have a software idea. Just hearing about the problem and how it affects your day would help me understand what’s worth building.

Thanks to anyone willing to share.

opinion My Company Offshored Everything Except Me. It's Messing With My Head

I'm the only one for two large buildings. 5 new helpdesk hires in 5 months, all offshored. Entra ID access ticket? India. M365 license? India. Large Network issue? India. Big infrastructure project? India. My manager is overseas too, and he still wants to hire me full time from my contract role. Is this where IT is headed? Or has it been like this for decades? What's your team like? Can you say I’m in a dead end position?

I can’t be the only one in very difficult headspace

help request M365 Admin Center is BAD & Not making sense.

I don't understand what is wrong with M365 Admin Center, we paid a lot of money to start merging out entire business onto the platform and I can't even get myself onto our custom domain without running into errors, bugs, etc.
I keep getting this error when trying to change myself to our domain, YES I have gone back about 6 times and verified it says "healthy" status, but it jumps between healthy and "not finished setup" constantly, An exception of type Microsoft.Online.BOX.Util.Exceptions.InternalException (EXOBadRequest) was thrown.

I have a timeline to get people merged over and I have no clue what to do here if M365 is just horrible.

Just trying to setup basic email for now....... And when I try to load our users (2) it just loads infinitely.

self-promotion doing research for my job - what makes teams switch msps or start outsourcing to one in the first place?

Hey there everyone,

Im a marketer trying to do some basic research for my job, I promise I wont turn this post around into a sales pitch lol. I just want to hear about some of the specific triggers/events that have created a real need for teams to outsource some aspects of IT to managed service providers, or switch providers. If you have any stories or thoughts around I’d love to hear them! Thanks
