Rotten wood behind chimney siding

Recently had an inspection done because I’m going to be renting out my house, and they found that the wood behind my chimney siding is rotten. They only inspected what was shown from the loose siding and as far up as they can reach, so I’m not entirely sure how far this damage goes. The rest of the siding on the house doesn’t look loose, just this area. Any estimates on what this costs or how to go about fixing it in a way that won’t break the bank? This is in Nashville. Also, is this an emergency? I’m a first time homeowner and have only had this place a year so this kinda sucks.

Also, these are the pictures from the inspections, I don’t have better ones because I haven’t been to the property since the inspection.

Door seals

Hello friends

I replaced my door seals and apparently I did a horrible job. Can anyone help me figure out how to do a better job? I got the expensive seals from Lowe’s, pulled out the old ones, measured, and put in the new ones. They’re the perfect length. My door closes super tight at the bottom, and loose at the top. I have no idea how to get this door fully sealed. Please help.

French horizontal window is not closing - I’m freezing :(

Hi everyone,

I hope this is the correct place to ask for some help with a French window. Since I haven’t succeed at finding other Reddit posts with my issue and type of window, here we are.

For starters, I have no idea how old the building is. The window is in my room, and I get cold at night :(

I will be sharing more videos of the window in question and another window (same brand) that actually works.

What I have done so far:
-Clean the frame/where the locks are. There was dust and webs everywhere.
-Put some oil into the locks or whatever name the sliding things have.
-Check for differences between the working window and my broken window. (The working one is dirtier and has almost the same defects…)

Broken window description:
The brand is named Pidosan… and when I searched for it I found a Turkish site? Idk, the brand name has the same font so.

What, I believe, seems to be broken/malfunctioning, is the knob. When I turn the knob for the working window it feels easy to turn. With the broken one, I feel like it’s a bit stuck/feels weird when I turn it.

The black plastic frame, I think it’s the seal of the window? (Sorry, cannot name it in English), it’s loose in the left side.

It is impossible for me access this window from outside: I hope you can get why from the videos, I’m terrible with explanations.

The locks, the little things that lock the window, are synchronized but I don’t know, something feels off.

Lastly, I’m in France, how come I’m freezing? What if I told you I used to feel cold in Argentinian summers?-

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!

Best mattress topper as a temporary fix? Moving in 6 months and don't want to buy a whole new bed right now

My mattress has started sinking in the middle and it’s been waking me up in the middle of the night with pain all over. I need some temporary fix because my lease ends in 6 months and I'm definitely not gonna spend money on stuff I'll probably leave behind. Was thinking of getting the Nolah mattress topper to survive the next few months but I'm worried that since it’s memory foam it would also soften or sag with daily use. Any experience with this topper? What else would you suggest?

Can anybody tell me what this style of interior glass is called, and what kind of moulding is used to secure the panels? I didn’t break that one at the bottom, just ignore that

Am I unreasonable about bugs in home?

So I bought a pretty well-maintained 1960’s bilevel about a year ago. My favorite part (and least favorite part depending on the season) about the house is the big windows and wide deck doors on almost all the walls in the living room and dining room. The views are absolutely amazing. The windows and deck doors are new as of a couple years ago. The transom glass panels above the newer ones are I think the original with some surrounding wooden panels. The south facing wall gets close to 70 Asian lady beetles daily on the inside in the colder months probably from Dec to Beginning of April. I understand that some bugs are expected in homes especially when living in such a wooded area. But these have been a big annoyance. I recently got exclusion work but I don’t have much hope because I already see a few since my area had a freeze warning recently. I’m dreading the colder months and am on the brink of selling the house. I love seeing bugs when I’m hiking and camping in the back country but absolutely hate bugs inside home. Am I being unreasonable about this? I know I have other things going on adding to the stress like having started my own business that will still take time to profit, being at the end of my savings and not being able to afford my mortgage after a month since my partner and I are ending things. Just very confused and having a difficult time adjusting to being a homeowner. I was pretty happy in my “luxury” apartment and I get that I should be grateful for having a house. But it’s just expense after expense and doing it by myself is difficult.

Roof leak

I recently posted about water getting in to my ceiling! I noticed this on my roof, the bottom shingles are soaking wet and they seem to line up. Could this be the issue and why water is getting in to my house?

Drywall crack or structural issue?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Just showed up today. It’s at the front of our house, and we currently have a crack widening in our slab toward the back of the house. The front half seemed fine until this showed up. I found online that drywall cracks are often harmless if they’re perfectly straight, but this is not. Does it look structural?

Slab home built in about 2000.

Edit: we are getting foundation repair people out after the weekend, just trying to figure out how worried I should be.

This is the first wall crack we’ve noticed since the foundation slab started quickly widening about two weeks ago. No door frame cracks or anything like that. We were hoping the foundation issue was only in the back of the house so hoping this doesn’t mean we have a larger issue at hand. Was hoping to understand if this looks like a typical drywall crack with seasons changing or not.

I feel uncomfortable in my own home..

I bought my first home almost 5 years ago. One of the first things I did was hire a pest company as I have a fear of certain bugs & dislike mice, roaches etc. i didn’t notice any issues with pests, just for prevention. Throughout the past few years I’ve found the occasional spider, beetle, spricket in my basement. Not a fan of those bugs but I can deal. During the warmer months I usually find a total of about 2-4 house centipedes. The weird thing is they’re usually on a specific wall in my living room. Fast forward to this summer into fall. I have literally found more of these bastards than I’d like to & now they are no longer on that specific wall but in my kitchen, dining room, coat closet & last night, in my bedroom. I am disgusted with them & don’t care that they can’t hurt me or that they eat other bugs. I want to understand why I’m finding more & more than usual. They usually pop out on the first floor only. Have never found one upstairs. I’ve had my pest company come out but that helps for a few weeks & then they make their presence again. I cannot walk through my home without being on alert looking at walls, base boards etc. I do not feel comfortable in my own home. Any suggestions?

Blinds don’t block out light

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi all,
I’m having issues with the blinds, particularly in the mornings, as they let in light and wake me up.
I was advised that fitting the blinds inside the window recess could help, but unless blackout blinds or curtains are installed, I understand this could cost approximately £1,000.
I’d also like to highlight that the mechanism on the third blind (on the right) appears to be faulty, meaning it doesn’t close fully like the other two.
Could you please advise on the options for resolving these issues, including whether curtains could be a suitable alternative?

O-ring stuck to socket thread

Post image
4 Upvotes

I can't loosen this sucker! I've tried gripping it with my bare hand, a latex glove, and a rubber jar opener. The circuit breaker is off, but I'm hesitant to try pliers or any kind of lubricant. If you look above the glass, you can see one of the other four sockets, which I had no problem removing the o-ring from. Any thoughts?

This is what I used as lubricant and to give you an idea of the logistics of me trying to do this on a ladder with one hand.

First time seeing a thermal camera used for leak detection

Post image
5 Upvotes

I'd never seen this or a thermal camera up close before so impressing me might be a pretty low bar. I have a leak in a cold water pipe near the base of my shower in a solid concrete wall. It is just a tiny leak. Before the plumbers come in (tomorrow) the leak detector guy redirected the hot water into the cold water pipe and used the thermal camera to see where the cold water pipe stopped getting warmer. Apparently it stops flowing at the leak and doesn't heat up the pipe, blocked by the tap, by dispersing the existing cold water.

It was amazing the leak lit up like a beacon.

In a prior leak this same guy about 15 years ago used nitrogen injected under pressure to listen for the leak.

Now the plumbers don't have to dig out more than they have to. I was even more impressed when he fired up ChatGPT (free version) and dictated his report and had it send an invoice and photos in no more than 5 minutes. He said it saves him half a days work each week. When I saw this guy do that I realised what a game changer AI will be.

Then probably for my amusement he had AI rework the report to make it more technical sounding. My response was something to the effect "You can't send bullshit like that out."

It made me think
