❔Question / Discussion❔ How often did medieval soldiers strike each other down at the same time?

Thumbnail

There's a common expression in self defense. It goes "Nobody wins in a knife fight." That's because if you have a knife and fight another person with a knife, both parties end up badly cut. Did this dynamic exist with medieval weapons where both soldiers end up cutting each other so much that they're both killed or incapacitated?

Hello, I'm currently writing a seminary work for my history degree, and I wanted to ask if somebody doesn't have literature for St. Margaret of Hungary because she seems to be a very niche saint and I have troubles finding literature about her. Any tips appreciated.

🏛️Career Advice / Help🏛️ Grad School Panic..

This will be short, because there's really not much to it.. I am just very caught between pursuing an MLIS vs an MA in History, and I wanted to see if anyone with an MA/PhD or MLIS here has any advice. For context, I am about to finish all of the degree requirements for my BA in History, and have one more academic year remaining to complete my dual degree in Art History. I am also a library student supervisor, so I am aware of the general ins and outs of an academic library and positions within them. My main fears are the job market (of course), passion, and a feeling that I would betray one interest for the other. Also, I want to do history research specifically, not just maintain a continuing education on it in my personal time.

❔Question / Discussion❔ Have any of you participated in a history club? I need advice.

I'm looking to found one in my school and I'm just wondering what you guys did in yours, to get some inspiration. I tried last year and my school said our ideas were too similar to just the history class. My current goal statement is, "To explore history without the bounds of curriculum in a student-led environment and establish a community of students interested in history to share ideas."

I'm thinking of letting students do short fun presentations each meeting, and have discussions on certain topics, but I'm honestly at a bit of a loss. I really don't know what good activities would be. I would be president for the first year so I can shape how it goes.

I need to be really specific otherwise they'll tell me to try again next year. I'm thinking 30 minutes weekly, but that could be changed.

Thanks!

🧩Other Advice / Help🧩 Hi, may I ask for advice for postgraduate studies for History?

Hello everyone, I am currently an undergraduate student pursuing a degree in the economics field.

However, I will be graduating later than the original graduation date (which was supposed to be in 2025, but now I will be graduating in 2027). I do not think economics has been my strongest field, as evidenced by performance which could have been better. I have also found myself immersed in history (I've liked history in high school and pre-university studies), unlike economics where I feel as if I have to force myself to be someone I'm not in order to enjoy it. With history, I can find myself being immersed in it. I watched some lectures (though not fully) and I never experienced that with any of econs related lectures.

I find myself wanting to go into history (Master's and perhaps PhD) and perhaps pursue a career in academia there, but I know that chances are extremely slim (as it most likely is for other academia fields). I am wondering what makes it worth it for someone to pursue history at Master's level and also PhD level. For those who took up further studies at these levels, what were the most challenging aspects and what were the most rewarding aspects? What do you think makes a perfect candidate for those who want to pursue a Master's and PhD in History? What does your day-to-day look like? Do you have any advice for someone like me? Additionally, what are some career options outside of academia that are attainable with Master's and PhD in History? I am personally looking into doing my own history related research for my CV after my research deadline for my degree in December...

Thank you so much and hope all of you have a great rest of your week.

🏛️Career Advice / Help🏛️ Is a history degree worth it?

I’m a junior in high school and I don’t know what I want to do but I’ve always loved history and museums and I think it would be cool to work at a museum or do something history related. I live in Cleveland, Ohio and there are a few museums here which I could eventually work at if I major in history. But is there anything else I can do? (Besides teaching I cannot do that lol sorry) I don’t care about money I already know I’m probably not gonna have a lot I just want to be happy. But overall, would you say a history degree is worth it? I don’t have a lot for a masters or anything but I could probably try with a scholarship I have a good GPA but I really don’t want student debt. I’m definitely in denial over that but it’s okay😭 any advice is appreciated !! Thank you

🔎Research Advice / Help🔎 Evidence of oral storytelling tradition formed through games?

Hi Reddit historians,

I've recently been personally convinced that games were likely part of forming traditional oral stories; however, much of the literature I've read mentions improvisation vaguely (as part of the telling), but little is said about how it was formed. There also seems to be this idea that there is a 'teller' and an 'audience', but little is said about the role of the audience beyond listening. I remain convinced that there was likely more interaction than documented, but I've really struggled to find sources (aside from a note on word play games influencing oral storytelling in Scotland and Sumerian call and responses-- but that's not a scholarly source).

Would anyone be able to point me towards some sources?

📖Media / Resources Recommendation📖 Book suggestion Mexican history

Hi all, I’m currently working on a paper and I’m trying to find a good book that covers everyday life in Mexico during the Porfiriato or the late 19th century in general. I’ve been seeing different books on google but can’t really make up my mind. The book can be in Spanish or English, and ideally would be available to order online either in the US or Mexico.
Thanks! :)

🔎Research Advice / Help🔎 Help me find an niche topic for my paper!

Hello! I get to write a paper on any topic of American history from 1890-1990. I have a couple interests, mostly just initial questions i.e

Trauma is used as a tool to militarize the minds of young men through severe PTSD in order to create killing machines

Weather modification was used by the US to win the Vietnam war.

Why are men willing to fight for a powerful woman (lady liberty) but fear one inside their homes.

I don’t know if these are good topics and I am having a hard time finding reputable sources. I’d appreciate any specific events that align with one or any of these or if you have an event that is somewhat controversial so I have to pick a side. I’m really interested in medicine/disease trials/war but I don’t really know where to start

🔎Research Advice / Help🔎 Neutral Resources on Columbus?

It's no secret that Columbus is a controversial figure in history. You hear extremes from both sides, from a genocidal maniac to a saint. It's very hard to believe anything someone says once they get into hyperbole and I'd like to do some research to make my own decision. However, I'm also conscious that nothing will be complete neutral, and it's easy for even what appears to be completely nonfiction and historical to be biased, even heavily biased.

With that being said, does anyone have recommendations for neutral resources on Columbus? I prefer actual books, but other resources are okay as well. As far as his journals, are there any recommended translations or annotated versions available?

Thank you.

🔎Research Advice / Help🔎 Could a young woman in Nazi Germany work as a baker in 1938?

I'm writing a historical novel and am trying to find out if a woman who'd finished her apprenticeship by 1936 could have gotten a job in a small bakery that was not run by her family—and by "job" I mean one that allowed her to use her skills (rather than only working in the front). Or would this job be reserved for men and she would only be able to call herself a "helper"? In either scenario, would she be obliged to complete her Duty Year when that law came into effect in 1938 if she is under the age of 25?
