Mod Post Content policy reminder: all content must be relevant to discussion of the written Harry Potter books only (no discussion of movies, TV shows, stage plays, video games, narrated dramatisations, etc.)

Just to make things clear, we will not be discussing the new HBO show on this subreddit, and discussion around the new full-cast audiobook dramatisations must be focused on the contents of the story, i.e. discussions on the voice actors, production, soundscapes, etc are outside the scope of the sub.

This forum is devoted to discussion of the Harry Potter book series, and associated written works by J.K. Rowling. We focus only on the written works of J.K.Rowling; specifically the seven novels, three in-universe book releases (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Quidditch Through the Ages, and The Tales of Beedle the Bard, as written and illustrated by J. K. Rowling for the Comic Relief U.K. charity), and the original Pottermore articles. We do not allow content centered around any other form of HP media (no movies, TV shows, stage plays, video games, narrative dramatisations, etc.)

Any off topic content will be removed.

When asking yourself "is this type of content allowed?" The simplest way to find your answer is to look at it this way: in this subreddit, the movies, TV shows, stage plays, and video games don't exist. They were never made, and there's no reason they should ever be acknowledged in any way. Is this because we have a vendetta l against them? Not at all! We are simply a very specific space, with a niche focus.

If you have any questions you can send us a modmail message, and we will get back to you right away.

Discussion What do you think would have been a better and groundbreaking plot twist in the books regarding Voldemort/Harry?

• Upvotes

I love the books, but I have to admit that when I was reading the last one I expected a way bigger plot twist than Snape being (semi) good. However Harry being Voldemort’s horcrux was a VERY good step in the direction I was hoping the book would go. I just thought that since it was the last book, that JK Rowling would go out with a huge BANG, you know?

Discussion Do you think Griphook would’ve accepted Muriel’s goblin-made tiara as a substitute for the sword of Gryffindor?

Likely not, but I was curious to see what other people thought.

Actually, thinking about it, Harry could’ve offered the tiara as an upfront substitute, with the provision that if Griphook stayed loyal he’d receive the sword as well after Harry had finished with it.

Meaning that Griphook would have incentive to stay loyal as he could walk away with both, and he’d know Harry was being honest/true to his word.

That thing you are dreading, October 16th!

Today’s the day!! Poor Lavender Brown, poor Binky. Professor Trelawney tells Lavender Brown “Incidentally, that thing you are dreading – it will happen on Friday the sixteenth of October.”

And later on

“The sixteenth of October! ‘That thing you’re dreading, it will happen on the sixteenth of October!’ Remember? She was right, she was right!”

I don’t know why this stuck with me but I always remember this date because of this😅

Can you guess the book and chapter? #45

• Upvotes

45 is up for your enjoyment! Happy Saturday!

As a reminder what this is and how it works:

Below are 7 sentences from the 7 HP books. I use a random number generator to pick the book and chapter, then hand pick a sentence that I think is decent. Not too long, too short, too obvious ect.  *** There MAY be repeated books in a set, but there will not be repeated chapters in a set. So there COULD be two from The Philosopher’s Stone, but they would be from different chapters! **\*
Scoring your points: It is 2 points for guessing the book, and 1 point for guessing the chapter, for a total of 21 points. It is obviously harder to guess the chapter than the book, but not everyone even cares to remember the chapter titles in the first place, which is totally fair and valid. So chapter titles are just a bonus point.

Below are the sentences and the answers hidden behind spoiler tags! These are fun to make, and I intend to make quite a few more if people keep enjoying them!

  1. “Minerva, could I ask you to stand guard here while I take Harry upstairs?”  The Goblet of Fire - Chapter 36: The Parting of the Ways
  2.  He was keen to make his intentions perfectly clear. The Half-Blood Prince - Chapter 15: The Unbreakable Vow
  3. “He’s not even that good, it’s just because he’s famous . . . famous for having a stupid scar on his forehead. . . .”  The Chamber of Secrets - Chapter 4: At Flourish at Blotts
  4. “In fact, being — forgive me — rather cleverer than most men, my mistakes tend to be correspondingly huger.  The Half-Blood Prince - Chapter 10: The House of Gaunt
  5. “She — er — got a bit shirty with me.”  The Prisoner of Azkaban - Chapter 12: The Patronus
  6. Occasionally one of them started forward excitedly, as if they had seen something interesting at last, only to fall back looking disappointed. The Deathly Hallows - Chapter 12: Magic is Might
  7. He looked back at the whisperers as if he wanted to say something to them, but thought better of it.  The Philosopher’s Stone - Chapter 1: The Boy who Lived

Pottermore Question about Hogwarts Sorting

If I were a Hogwarts student, what is the exact method for getting sorted into the house that suits me best? Also, which Hogwarts house sorting test do you think is the most accurate?

Mr and Mrs Mason

I was just rereading the early parts of Chamber of Secrets when I came across this:

Aunt Petunia was just passing around a box of after- dinner mints when a huge barn owl swooped through the dining room window, dropped a letter on Mrs. Mason’s head, and swooped out again. Mrs. Mason screamed like a banshee and ran from the house shouting about lunatics. Mr. Mason stayed just long enough to tell the Dursleys that his wife was mortally afraid of birds of all shapes and sizes, and to ask whether this was their idea of a joke.

Look, I HATE to defend the Dursleys for pretty much anything... but do the Masons truly believe that Vernon, who really wants this deal to go through, somehow found out that Mrs Mason is mortally afraid of birds, and then as a prank went out and trained an owl to swoop through their window and drop a letter on her head?... 😂

Pottermore Question about Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff

If I'm not sure whether I belong in Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff, what criteria should I use to decide?

r/HarryPotterBooks • • 22h ago

They really missed an opportunity in book 7 to go chase down a horcrux in either the Muggle orphanage or St. Brutus's Secure Centre for Incurably Criminal Boys.

Would have been amazing if somehow they brought the Voldemort child storyline to coincide with something that Vernon Dursley thought up.

Currently Reading Finished my re-read of Harry Potter

Watched the Deathly Hallows in Concert over the summer and decided to reread the books. Took me a little less than 2 months to finish. I learned a lot in my re-read that I had forgotten since this was the first time I read them again after the books came out. What a whirlwhind summer, it's bittersweet to have finished but I might make this a yearly tradition.

Voldemort's Body

if voldemorts plan was to live forever, what was his plan for when old age became a danger? horcruxes can save you from your soul going on, but what about your body?

unless he planned on just creating a new body like he did in bk4, every time he grew old, for all of time? in that case, would having a horcrux be the only viable method of transferring your soul to a different body? as in, you have to die, then your horcrux tethers your soul to earth, where you live a terrible existence, until a new body is created for you to be inhabited? rinse and repeat?

also, that makes me wonder, was voldemort physically an older man after he gained his new body? we know he was 71 when he died. did he appear that old, or did he look younger?

Discussion Polyjuice potion

If two people change their looks with a potion, and each of them turns in to the other one’s crush with the purpose of having sex, would this be considered sex harassment to the owners of the identity they’re turning into?

How come nobody prepare a memorial for Sirius after he died?

Any of the Order members or Harry's friends could've prepared a memorial service to help Harry grieve for losing his father figure. Or at least gather around to say a few kind words.

Barty Crouch, the fake Madeye Moody

One thing that I really don't understand about Barty Crouch Jr and the polyjuice potion thing is that Crouch seemed to also take on Madeye's entire personality when he was posing as him. When other characters take polyjuice potion, their personalities don't seem to change. It's hard for me to believe that someone as awful as Crouch could have been acting the whole time like that. Surely he would have slipped up sooner along the way and/or Dumbledore or another smart witch/wizard would have suspected something much earlier?

Goblet of Fire Mrs. Weasley worrying during the Quidditch world cup

I'm kind of grumpy at Mr. Weasley for not sending one of those talking patronus to Mrs. Weasley after the fiasco at the world cup to let her know they were ok. Of course she was going to be worried!

Goblet of Fire HOT TAKE: By both “Pro Elf slavery” and “House Elf Liberation” standards, Winky was very foolish in her Choices & not a very Good Elf

“Master Barty” wanted her to tend to Junior and keep it secret, NOT to play mother and indulge in it so badly she leaves Bertha Jorkins to talk to Invisible Junior again, instead of immediately finding Senior to do the paperwork Jorkins wanted (People have been saying Barty Sr was nowhere near the Crouch House, but this is both ignoring how he closely got there in tome to catch Bertha’s snooping and zap her with Obliviate, and how dumb it would be for a lower clerk to go to the Boss’s house just to have him not be there, instead of him receiving her at his house *for the convenience* to begin with). Winky could have at least Stunned Bertha for the snooping and then try to get hold of Barty Sr after that, but instead she did nothing and Senior had to do everything.

And after all this, she still had the gall to boast “WINKY KEEPS ALL OF MASTER’S GREATEST SECRETS”, it reeks of tryhard self-delusion. :P

Pottermore Do you think the official Hogwarts Sorting Ceremony test on the Wizarding World website is accurate?

Instead of the quick 8-question version that randomly picks questions, I'm talking about the full 28-question version that shows your percentage match for each house when you finish. If you've tried it, did it accurately sort you into your house?

Discussion How come Dumbledore never had any open allies in Slytherin?

I’ve always wondered this. Dumbledore was a prodigy with years of experience and connections under his belt. He was offered the position of MOM a few times.

I wonder how a man who commanded the respect of most, had no Slytherins or Sacred 28 families like the Selwyns for example on his side?

Half-Blood Prince The Dark Lord and Slughorn

What do you think of the relationship was between the Dark Lord and Slughorn?

I think it’s clear the Dark Lord respected him.

We see in the start of Half Blood Prince. The death eaters were looking for Slughorn. This is why Slughorn was in hiding.

Slughorn may have had a tinge of prejudice, but he wasn’t really prejudice against muggle borns. Look at his comments about Lily. He was a proud Slytherin, and was very elitist in his attitude. That’s why he had no use for Ron. He only wanted to surround himself with the best. Recruiting the two brightest stars of the trio to the Slug Club.

Why do you think Dark Lord was looking for Slughorn during the second war?

Do you think it was to try to recruit him, maybe utilize some of his connections?

Or, do you think being so close to death made the Dark Lord weary that anyone could possibly know his secret about Horcruxes, therefore the Dark Lord considered it too dangerous to allow Slughorn to continue to live?

Can you guess the book and chapter? #43

43 means that I’ve done over 300 sentences now. I’m curious how much of the story you could glean if you put only my chosen sentences on chronological order. Can’t be bothered to, but it’s fun to wonder about.

So chapter titles are just a bonus point.
Below are the sentences and the answers hidden behind spoiler tags! These are fun to make, and I intend to make quite a few more if people keep enjoying them!

 1. “Mostly you just turn a fairly unpleasant orange color, but a couple of people have also sprouted tentaclelike warts all over their bodies.” The Half-Blood Prince - Chapter 5: An Excess of Phelm

  1. “I’ll go starkers before I put that on,” said Ron stubbornly. The Goblet of Fire - Chapter 10: Mayhem at the Ministry

 3. “Of course, it became apparent to me very quickly that he had no extraordinary talent at all.” The Half-Blood Prince - Chapter 2: Spinner’s End

  1. “That’s right, Harry . . . come on, think of something happy. . . .” The Deathly Hallows - Chapter 32: The Elder Wand (God I love Luna so much)

  2. He swept off his plumed hat and bowed them inside. The Chamber of Secrets - Chapter 8: The Deathday Party

 6. “I just asked her if she’d seen anything odd, and she started to say —” The Chamber of Secrets - Chapter 16: The Chamber of Secrets

  1. They popped out of the walls and tables to do a bit of formation gliding; Nearly Headless Nick, the Gryffindor ghost, had a great success with a reenactment of his own botched beheading. The Prisoner of Azkaban - Chapter 8: The Flight of the Fat Lady
