Discussion Why was Ginny allowed to return to Hogwarts in DH and why didn’t Voldemort use her to get to Harry?

I know Harry broke up with Ginny to protect her, but their relationship was hardly a secret, nor was Harry’s connection to the Weasley family.

In CoS and OotP, Voldemort had already exploited Harry’s attachment to others, using Ginny and Sirius to get to him. By DH, he controlled the Ministry, and Death Eaters were openly hunting Harry’s allies. So why wouldn’t he at least have tried to use Ginny to lure Harry out?

And why did the Weasleys let her return to Hogwarts, knowing the situation? I understand that they wanted to avoid suspicion by keeping up appearances, but wasn‘t that too late anyway, given how well-known their deep ties to Harry were?

Also, I’m not arguing that Voldemort understands love, but he definitely had prior knowledge of how Harry behaves concerning the people he cares about.

Discussion It still bothers me how the Trio almost starved in Deathly Hallows when food duplication is literal

1.6k Upvotes

Hermione explicitly explains Gamp’s Law of Elemental Transfiguration: you can’t conjure food from nothing, but you can multiply it if you already have some. They literally had a loaf of bread and some scraps. Why didn't they just duplicate it infinitely? Instead, we spent half the book reading about them being moody and starving in a tent. Did Hermione just panic and forget basic transfiguration, or is this a massive oversight?

Dungbomb I sure do wish I could see the Deathly Hallows films.

No seriously, I can't see like 90% of the two films. IT'S SO FREAKIN' DARK ON OLEDs. I was watching myself eat in the reflection of the TV most of time. Deathly Hallows, bah! More like Harry Potter and the Deathly Eating Habits.

Discussion Would Harry's story been different if even one adult had been consistently honest with him?

So many adults in Harry’s life either hide information from him, make decisions for him, or tell him things when it’s already too late. Do you think Harry would’ve made better decisions if the adults around him had been more honest, or were some things always going to happen regardless?
I’m curious which specific conversation you think would’ve changed the most.

Question How powerful is Harry Potter ?

• Upvotes

Harry is a pretty skilled duelist and can give any adult a run for their money but is he really that powerful ?

Compared to Dumbledore and Voldemort and could he ever reach their level ?

With Voldemort Harry did have an unfair advantage due to him being protected by his mother charm and how he became the master of the elder wand thus Voldemort couldn’t use it against him at the end.

Discussion What if Tom Riddle's memory from the diary became real? Would Tom's main soul get a proper body?

• Upvotes

So basically, Tom's Horcrux drains Ginny's life, he comes back to life, does he seek out where his soul is? Does he go to Albania and find the rest of it, and allow it to merge with him? How does that happen, and does Peter still escape and find Voldemort, pledge his loyalty, and work on expediting the events of the fourth book?

Looking for dog name suggestions for my female German Shepard! I’d love something Harry Potter themed but something that isn’t a regular human name like Ginny, Luna, etc.

Question Who are Hagrid’s friends?

I’m re reading HBP and I’m at the part where Aragog has died and Hagrid writes to Harry to ask if he, Ron, and Hermione will come to the burial.

All of a sudden it struck me as odd that Hagrid didn’t have anyone other than 3 students to ask to join him for the burial.

I know he’s friendly with a lot of the creatures in the Forrest and I know he goes into Hogsmeade to the pub but who are his friends outside the golden trio?

He spends a lot of time with the three of them. So I’m wondering who he spent time with before they arrived at school.

Discussion Allergies and Polyjuice

• Upvotes

Kind of a dumb question, but if someone were to take polyjuice potion and eat something they were allergic to, do u think they would get an allergic reaction in the new body they're in. Or do u think they'd be fine?? OR would they get a delayed reaction in their own body once the potion wears off.

Tbf tho, this is a magical world. I'm sure they'd have a solution for allergies anyway.

Discussion Barty Crouch Jr. tragedy

I’m re-listening to the Goblet of Fire audio book by Stephen Fry. Yesterday, I listened to the chapter (Chapter 35 “Veritaserum") where Barty Crouch confessed what he had done with the truth serum. And Stephen’s narration struck me deeply with how tragic this character is.

Crouch Jr. confessed everything with a flat tone, (how his father never truly cared for him, how his mother volunteered to die in his stead in a depressing prison cell, how Crouch Senior committed heinous crimes to Bertha for the family secrets to go on), while his house elf winky pitifully begged him to stop. When he spoke about killing his father, turning his father into a bone and burying him, (with winky wailing in the background), even Dumbledore adopted a soft voice. In the end, with an insane smile dreaming about the glory his master would grant him, he lowered his head. Shorter after he got his soul sucked out by the dementors.

The way he spoke under the influence felt like a psychotic chess grand master. He was so young, so brilliant, yet so misled. How wrong can a family go for him to end up like this?

Discussion Could veritaserum overcome a memory charm?

Hello! I’m currently re reading OOTP for the 100th time, and just came across the part where Kingsley puts a memory charm on Marietta in dumbledores office. Do you think if umbridge had given her veritaserum after the charm had been performed would she have told the truth? Or what she thought was the truth?

Discussion About Harry returning the Elder Wand

In the books he returns the wand to Dumbledore grave and his Reasoning is he Wants the wand power to be Broken once he die of old age which will be an undefeated death thus the wand Allegiance would never be Won by anyone else

But why would he do that when he knows how easily it is for the wand to change loyalty, after all a big part of how he defeated Voldemort was due to him beating Draco who was the true master at the Time even though it was a physical confrontation and not a Magical one and Draco didn't have the elder wand on him nor was he Aware of him owning it yet the wand considered it good enough to change allegiance

So the wand can change Allegiance easily if the master lost in any way and not only a Duel so Harry plan of ending the wand power will fail once he lose in anything and not only combat

Currently Reading OWLs and the Room of Requirement

Reading OoTP and just realized, why didn't Harry and crew use the Room of Requirement more often for studying?

They often complained of the common room being too noisy and distracting, and if they thought of something like, "I need a quiet room with OWL-level study books and materials", then the room would've been more useful than the library.

Overall, I feel like the RoR is overpowered as hell but they really should have used it more often.

Discussion Did anyone tell Myrtle?

Hagrid is essentially the official culprit of why Myrtle is dead, right? The guy was publicly expelled and had his wand snapped as a punishment for releasing the beast that supposedly killed her.

I mean at some point someone had to tell Myrtle, right? That they hired the guy and now he lives on the grounds and has tea time with the students. Do you think they pass each other in the hallway once in awhile and Myrtle just mean-mugs the crap out of him as if he was that vile Olive Hornby?

Edit: I mean "official" as in he was oficially blamed and held accountable. Not that he actually did it.

Currently Reading How did Harry's dreams work?

Something I've never understood completely:

In OoTP, Harry has almost nightly dreams of the Department of Mysteries, but it's also explained that the "dreams" are Harry sharing Voldemort's mind. If I recall correctly, this is the only time we see Harry sharing Voldemort's thoughts and not his actions.

After OoTP, Harry only sees what Voldemort is actually doing in the moment, not what he's thinking.

So was Voldemort just obsessively thinking about the hallway leading to the Department every night? Or was someone (possibly an Imperiused person) actually checking the door every night, on the chance it was unlocked?

Discussion That thing you are dreading, October 16th!

Today’s the day!! Poor Lavender Brown, poor Binky. Professor Trelawney tells Lavender Brown “Incidentally, that thing you are dreading – it will happen on Friday the sixteenth of October.”

And later on

“The sixteenth of October! ‘That thing you’re dreading, it will happen on the sixteenth of October!’ Remember? She was right, she was right!”

I don’t know why this stuck with me but I always remember this date because of this😅

Question Can ghosts be harmed ?

Like what happens is a ghost just becomes problematic and starts haunting people ?
I heard myrtle haunted her school bully till she got the ministry involved who essentially told her to leave the bully alone.

Like if a ghost becomes an issue can a wizard do something that gives them consequences for their actions.

I mean you can’t kill a ghost but maybe you can just erase them from existence

Discussion Playing quidditch at school is basically a guarantee to be a pro so where do teams get players?

There’s 7 players on a team so there’s 28 players total in the “farm league”. There’s an actual League so where are they getting this players from? My impression is that there’s more than 4 teams in the pro league so anyone that plays at howgarts is basically guaranteed a starting spot. And I’m assuming pro leagues have 2-3 people on the bench. There’s already very few witchs/wizards so we’re are they getting these players from? On top on that Irish are known to be the top national team aside from Bulgaria but we only meet like 2 Irish wizards and neither of them are on the quidditch team.

Discussion Would a Dementor’s Kiss in Deathly Hallows have been a better ending for Umbridge?

I’ve always found Umbridge’s final fate a bit unsatisfying, having to rely on post-series expanded lore to find out she eventually went to Azkaban feels like a missed opportunity for a proper narrative climax on the page.

What if, right after Harry stuns her and steals the locket in the Ministry courtroom, her Patronus vanishes and the Dementors swarm down to suck out her soul?

Would this have worked better to give her a definitive on screen downfall, or would it have been too dark/out of place? intrested to hear what you guys think!

Question When should I read these to my daughter?

My daughter is only 16 months so it will be a while obviously, but what age is it appropriate to start? Chamber of Secrets came out when I was a freshman in high school and a friend's younger sister told me about them. So obviously she doesn't need to be 14, but I babysat for a girl whose mom started reading them to her when she was 5 and the books quickly got into very dark themes for a child that young.

So what's the sweet spot for a staring age?
