Hi all,
I'm a software developer from Poland and in my spare time I'm building a small open-source project that tries to predict where a golf ball lands from a phone-style video of the first moments of its flight, using computer vision plus a ball-flight physics model.
So far I've tested it only on simulated shots. Now I need real ones, and this is where you could help: if you hit balls with a launch monitor or simulator, I'd love a short video of a few shots together with the numbers your monitor showed.
What I need per shot
- A video of the shot, the original file from your phone (Reddit, WhatsApp and YouTube compress the video and the ball vanishes).
- The launch-monitor numbers: ball speed, launch angle, launch direction, spin, carry. A screenshot is fine if typing is a pain.
- A rough idea of where the camera was (distance and height). The form asks.
How to record (2-minute version)
- Phone on a tripod or leaning on something, landscape, no zoom.
- Highest frame rate you have: 120/240 fps slow-mo is great, 60 fps is OK.
- Side-on (face-on or from behind your back) about 3-5 m / 10-15 ft from the ball, at about hip height, with the ball on the tee in the picture and the path of the ball in front of it: some sky outdoors, the screen or net indoors.
- Any club, any skill level. Mishits are useful data too.
In a sim bay: put the phone to the side as far back as the room allows, with the ball on the tee and the first metre or two of flight towards the screen in the picture. Even that short flight is useful: it helps the ball detection and the launch-angle checks, while outdoor shots are what test the landing prediction.
How to send it: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdNJGuFxPPrBziIWq2Om1SYzRwqzrQB_vH27VpyoydsLAVlcw/viewform - one response per shot, about a minute each. You fill in the camera setup once per session. It's a Google Form with a file upload, so Google asks you to sign in to a Google account before it opens.
Privacy: the videos and numbers are used only to develop and test the software. Because of the upload, I can see the name and e-mail of the Google account each file came from; I don't use them for anything except contacting you about your shots. Nothing is published unless you tick the optional box in the form, your username/e-mail are never published, GPS data in the video files is removed, and I'll delete your data whenever you ask.
There's no reward, sorry. It's a hobby project. But if people are interested I'm happy to post the results here: how close the predictions get to your monitor's carry numbers, and where it fails.
Questions or ideas about the setup are very welcome in the comments. Thanks!
