Before posting a photo, you should read this.

1.7k Upvotes

So you found a photo that you think has a spirit or ghost on it, before you post it and get upset about 30 people saying it’s a piece of dust or a bug, you may want to read this!

BEFORE DOING ANYTHING

Do read the posts

https://www.reddit.com/r/Ghosts/comments/deki6k/explanation_of_orbs_aka_backscatter/

and

https://www.reddit.com/r/Ghosts/comments/icziuc/ring_doorbells_security_camera_videos_and_false/

As these really do have useful information on how to spot particle orbs, lens flare and insects crawling over lenses which do make up most of the post in this Reddit community channel.

It is common for people who believe they are haunted to take lots of photos and assume that any “orbs” must be related to this. In fact, it’s quite easy to photograph orbs. If you can’t see the orb then it’s not there. People might say that cameras can pick up ‘orb’ energy but a lot of them just don’t understand why digital cameras tend to easily pick up particles (dust, dander, hair, insects).

If you have read the above and are sure (or not quite sure) then read on.

BEFORE POSTING

Make sure you have the original photo downloaded or posted from the same device the picture was taken from. Having a photo shared from a social media site, screen grabbed on a phone, photographed from a screen or been email shared will likely to be low resolution and suffer from further compression which destroys any fine detail and will generally be useless.

If the photo is just a photo then scan the photo in at least 300 DPI and save it as a “.PNG” image. If you don’t have access to a scanner then you can take a photo of it but take it in a brightly lit room and don’t use a flash to reduce reflections on the photo.

Use the original resolution of the photo, do not rescale, resize, brighten the image to make posting easier.

If you have to edit the photo to remove people then draw the smallest black filled box you can to hide their face or them. Don’t crop the picture or remove large chunks of the picture. Keep the picture the same same size. Once edited, save / export the image as a “.PNG” image as this will keep the JPEG image as it is (if you resave it as a JPEG it recompresses the image in a lossy way so that fine detail tends to get lost) if the paint program has it then make sure that “Save resolution” is checked and that you save “EXIF information”.

If you must highlight anything in the picture (to show where you think the paranormal image is) then use a bright colour that can be seen easily, use a transparent box with thin lines and draw it in the general area of what you want us to see, do not cover anything nearby. Save it as a “.PNG” as above. If you do this then make sure you post the original too.

If you want to change the contrast or brightness of a photo then again do so but save as a “.PNG” as above and post the original for comparison. If you have other pictures from the same area that were taken at the same time then post these too as comparison photos.

If the photo is from a place you can visit again easily then take more pictures of the same area using the same camera, try to take it at different times of the day and try to take a picture at the same time of day the original was at. Also, take pictures of the surrounding area and close up images of the original location.

It is important to note that even “taking the picture in the same place” is going to mean that you will be taking the picture at different angles, heights and places which will cause images to change.

POSTING THE PHOTO

Post as an image within the Reddit post so people can see it, you can also post any comparison posts at the same time.

If the photo is too large then rescale it and save as a “.PNG” to post on Reddit but upload the original it to a file-sharing site like Google Drive or Dropbox, as this will not rescale the image.

Don’t just upload them to Imgur as most photo sharing websites will recompress the image and destroy fine detail in the picture.

Make sure the title is short but informative. “Possible ghost image from a cell in Alcatraz” is a good title, “GHOST!!?!?!?” is not.

ALSO SUPER IMPORTANT!!!! CONTEXT! CONTEXT! CONTEXT!

After you have posted the images. Make a comment in the post you have just created and put in as much context as possible!!! Too many photos tend to have the photo and some poor description and we have zero ideas of what we should be looking at.

Examples of what to include are…

  • Where the photo was taken. You don’t have to give the address but a location or rough area (if a private address) helps.

  • When the photo was taken, give the date and time if possible, if not known or you can’t remember then give what information you can (I.e In the winter in the early evening).

  • Who took the photo. It should be you or someone you know. Something like ‘Taken by A friend of a girlfriend that is friends with a baker, that my 2nd cousins' hairdresser visits every 3 months is not good’ means it is hard to ask follow up questions.

  • What you were trying to take. (I.e Ghosts, a high school prom or of your granny on her 97th Birthday)

  • If you (or they) were with other people. Also mention strangers.

  • What the weather was like. Was it sunny, cloudy, raining, hot, cold, warm?

  • Description of the location. If in a home, details about the place, I.e, If it is a house, apartment, cabin located 200 miles from civilizational, etc as well as if you are near a road or other places like a pub or bar, major flight path, etc. Else just whatever you can describe the place.

  • What did you feel at the time? I.e cold, scared, fearful, happy, sad, etc.

  • Why do you think it is paranormal? Describe this as best as you can.

  • Anything spooky that happen before or after. Within the same time frame, something that happens 3 months before is probably not related.

So good examples would be…

“This photo was taken at the Alcatraz prison in San Francisco. It is a picture of Cell 13 of cell block D in the cell house. It was taken on Sunday the 13th of May 2018 at around 2pm. It was mostly sunny but there were thick clouds, it was reasonably warm at around 65f and there were strong breezes every so often.

The photo was taken by myself, although I was with my girlfriend at the time. It was quite busy but no one was nearby when I took the photo. I was trying to take a picture of my girlfriend as she stood at the door but I noticed a strange white figure behind her. There was no one in the cell as we had waited for another couple to finish taking their picture before we took ours. I took 3 photos and you can see that the figure is in 2 of the pictures but is not in the third picture.

My girlfriend did say she felt cold in the cell, we had taken a picture in another cell (134 in Cell Block C) and she did not feel anything. The rest of the day was fine though and we enjoyed our trip.”

“A photo of a chair my grandmother used to sit on, in our house in Stirling, Scotland. It was taken on the 1st June 2015, in the wee hours of the morning at 6.30am. I remember it was very cold and it was dark grey and cold outside like a typical morning in Scotland. I had the lights on as although it was morning outside, it was dark in the room.

I took the photo as I felt a presence and I was drawn to the chair. I took 2 photos and you can see a grey mist around the chair. I would have taken more but my phone just drained of power and switched off, not sure why this happens as I am pretty sure I charged it overnight. I don’t smoke, didn’t have any hot drinks. I was in the room all alone as my parents and sister were still in bed and my dog was still on the sofa sleeping peacefully.

Once I charged my phone and saw the pictures, I was filled with deep happiness, I tried to take more photos but the mist never came back. What do you think it is.”

Bad examples are…

“Ghosts?!???!!?!?!”

“I took this photo whilst in an abandoned building, do you think it is a ghost?”

“Whilst trying to contact my dead aunt to ask where she left her cash, I took lots of photos and all of them had orbs and I heard some moans, screams and creaking coming from my cousins' bedroom but her door was locked!!! Is the house haunted?”

Caught on Camera I was 14 and his is a picture of me at my dad's house

I posted yesterday about a couple weird things that used to happen at my dad's house. I found an old picture of teenage me (I was an emo kid lol), and there shouldn't have been anything behind me. I was in the hallway by myself. This picture is 16 years old now. Do you see the face like I do? I see a face, and no one in the house has that color hair either.

While I was home alone I was watching a movie (so it appears quite dark in the picture I had the lights off) then heard a noise coming from in the kitchen. I just had the urge to take a picture so I did thinking there will probably be nothing. But when I brightened the picture I noticed something in the doorway. What do y'all think?

Never seen shi like this before

What Do You Think? My neighbor has died. Can I help his spirit move on?

I didn't know him much other than that he was around 70, was in a wheelchair and was incredibly depressed. An ambulance has picked him up around 5 times since the short time i've lived here (5 months) and today, many police cars and an ambulance showed up. Turns out he died. I'm not sure how he went but it was mentioned to me that he was suicidal.

I'm not big into witch craft or know much about spirits but is there anything I can do to possibly help him move on if he's stuck here?

Is this paranormal? I think my house might be haunted. Need opinions...

i think my house is haunted. the only person that died in it was my father, he built it. other than him a few dogs have died. a cocker spaniel named JoJo, and a boxer named Sarah. dad loved sarah, and I swear I can still hear her nails dashing across the floor to jump in my bed. The last and current one is Larry. Dad was long dead before my son brought him home as a puppy. Larry likes to lay at my feet, he follows orders well, but he can't stay away from my feet.

Is this paranormal? Could this just be a camera thing or did I actually catch something weird?

Post image

I took this picture in my apartment and didn’t notice this weird white streak until after. I don’t remember anything being there and there wasn’t any dust or cobweb hanging in that spot.
I do believe in ghosts, so obviously this caught my attention lol, but I’m open to normal explanations too.
Does this look like something with the camera/light, or does it look like it was actually in the room?
Has anyone ever gotten something similar in a picture before?

I have as of this year I have had many unexplained issues need feedback is it ghost or am I going out of my mind.

The most recent example is on Monday I came back from running errands and I put my lanyard up, which only has my house key and car fob. Then 2 days later I needed to go out and started looked for my lanyard and it wasn’t nowhere in the house I turned everything upside down looking for it. I went through everything I might have placed them in (trash can, refrigerator even). I took everything out of my purse thinking they might be at the bottom and all 3 side pockets and nothing. Just to make sure that I didn’t overlook them in the sofa my son and his friend moved everything to check if they were there and nothing.
On the 3rd day I woke up and decided to search my purse again by then I was so overwhelmed and as I decided to search my purse one last time, by then I was in tears and having a full blown meltdown with a panic attack. I searched the main pocket I saw nothing. I was searching the last pocket before I called someone out to replace the fob, I unzipped the pocket it felt off like full. And there was my lanyard. It’s in a pocket that I hardly ever use except for my inhaler.

I guess what I am asking is this a ghost messing with me or what. A while back somewhere on here I read that when your loved ones want to get your attention they do things like this. I have been praying a lot and missing my dad especially since his birthday is on Saturday October 17th.

I took two pictures at a family member’s house around 2018. There is something in the mirror that isn’t me.

I took the first two pictures while at my grandparent’s house for a birthday. I was around 14 at the time and I enjoyed taking selfies like most girls around that age did. I didn’t usually review them afterwards, I just took them and moved on. A few years ago (around 2023) I was browsing the Snapchat folder on my phone and I could see something in the mirror’s reflection behind me so I tapped on the picture and looked closer. No one was in the room with me, I was completely alone. I did have a filter on in one photo but not the other, and according to Snapchat those photos were taken less than a minute apart. The thing in the mirror changes shape, too. I didn’t notice anything when I was taking the pictures, and no other pictures I took that night had anything like that in it. Only these two. After I did notice it I took other pictures in the mirror and the background when I went back. I couldn’t find anything that would have caused that figure in the mirror. My grandparent’s house honestly just has some weird stuff happen and the property feels super creepy at night. They have two acres and aside from the area the house is on, the rest is dark and unlit at night. Sometimes we’ll hear thumping when there’s nothing there and a few months ago something knocked down a sturdy stacked wood pile and we didn’t even know until we went outside to help take out my grandparent’s dogs. We didn’t hear a thud or leaves crunching or anything that indicated they’d fallen despite being in the room closest to where the pile was. They’ve also found a unexplained scorched piece of wood really close to the house which is a log cabin with lots of dry leaves and foliage. My grandparent’s old house definitely had activity too. Growing up there my mother said one time she was home alone as a teen and something kept going up and down the walk up attic stairs and calling her name, and she also saw the ‘shadow man’ there. My brother and my cousin also saw it a few times, with my cousin saying that she would see it at other places. Plus a neighbor drove by right before the city tore that house down (it was on a flood zone) and took a picture that had a face in the window, which wasn’t possible because the windows were boarded up.

Honestly, I don’t know what appeared behind me in the mirror but I do know it wasn’t my own reflection, and I find it weird that other things still happen at that property sometimes. I’ve never had anything else like this happen in other pictures. Also, I’m sorry that the first two pictures with that thing in it aren’t great quality. Back then I had an iPhone 6 still and the camera quality wasn’t great.

Edit: The silhouette beside me in the picture I believe was mine, but the face in the mirror that can be seen under the lights fixtures isn’t me.

If ghosts are real why isn’t there more solid evidence?

First off I’m open minded, and kind of want ghosts to be real, but I simply don’t believe at this point. I can’t help but think if they were real there would be irrefutable evidence. Not just orbs in a crappy photo or a temperature change or a feeling like energy changed. What evidence has been the most solid for you?

Personal Encounter My little brother used to see a crying man beside his bed every night. Any explanation?

First of all, I am not a superstitious person, and I don’t usually think too much about these kinds of things. But I’ve been thinking about something that happened when I was a kid for a while now, and no matter how I look at it, I can’t seem to come up with a reasonable explanation.

When my little brother and I were five and six years old, we shared a bedroom. My brother has pretty severe autism and has always been a sensitive kid. When we were that young, he told me and my parents numerous times that an old man sat beside our bed every night, crying. He wasn’t joking or trying to scare me. Every time he brought it up, he seemed completely serious but not scared. He told me it happened almost every night. The old man would sit beside our bed and cry.

I slept in the same room as him, only a few feet away. I never saw anyone. Not once. I never heard anyone crying, either. There was never anything unusual about the room that I can remember. But my brother kept talking about him. Looking back, I can think of plenty of explanations. Nightmares, childhood imagination, sleep-related hallucinations, or something else entirely. But there’s one thing I’ve never been able to figure out. Why did he describe the same thing happening almost every night, with such absolute certainty and such specificity? And why was it always the same story: an old man crying beside our bed?

I don’t know if my brother was dreaming, hallucinating, or simply experiencing something I couldn’t understand. I just know he believed it was real, and I was sleeping right there beside him, and I never experienced it myself. Does anyone have any idea what this could have been? I’m genuinely curious whether there’s a psychological or sleep-related explanation for something like this, especially since we were so young and it's a pretty odd and specific thing to say as a kid. At least that's what I think. Maybe it's normal for kids around that age to have weird dreams or imaginations.

I showed my mom these pictures. she claimed she saw two figures in the first picture. when i showed her the second, she freaked out real bad and left immediately

every now and then my mom talks about seeing figures in pictures. according to her, she’s always had this ability and used to actively look for figures in pictures, until one day she saw a dead girl hanging from a beam and it scared her so much she wanted nothing to do with it and stopped trying.

today, we talked about it again. she explained its something about opening up your mind to seeing it. she used to go in a facebook group where people shared pictures and lots of people saw the same thing. i dont have this ability and im very intrigued, so i couldnt help myself despite her telling me the whole thing makes her uncomfortable.

i went to an antique store a few weeks back, inside the building you see on these pictures. i randomly took these pictures cause i wanted to show my friends where i went.
the air in the upper floors was very bad quality, causing me to yawn non stop. felt weird up there.

i wanna know, does anyone see anything?

Paranormal Community [Discussion] Ghost hunters, did ghosts like or dislike you?

I've noticed that anytime I watch a ghost hunting streak or video ghosts or the paranormal in general usually likes one person (I realized this watching Detour's VOD with Markiplier, while the ghosts loved Markiplier they hated Jordan) and I was wondering if any other hunters have experienced the same?

If so did they give a reason to why they hated or liked you?

Personal Encounter I saw a ghost last night. It had white dots for eyes and maybe 5ft tall with a head and body.

Weirdly enough, I wasn’t scared of it. I saw it, turned over, said a prayer and went to sleep. However, I’m wondering if the white eyes meant anything? I’ve seen a ghost years ago, however it was the complete opposite. All white with black eyes. How can you tell if the ghost is negative or not or just a visitor? Again, I didn’t have any fear, but I’m curious as to what kind of ghost it was or am I slowly tapping into my mediumship?
