advice Gentleman 101: Day 7 | Change a Tire
Thursdays are for skills every man should have. With winter tire season starting, let's begin with a basic one.
Before you ever need it:
• Find out what your car actually carries. Plenty of newer cars have no spare at all, just a sealant kit. Better to learn that in your driveway than on the motorway
• Locate the jack, the wrench, and the wheel lock key if you have one. Check the spare's air pressure now and then.
When it happens:
• Pull fully off the road onto flat, solid ground. Hazards on, parking brake on.
• Loosen the lug nuts half a turn while the tire is still on the ground.
• Jack at the lift point shown in your owner's manual, not just anywhere under the car.
• Swap the wheel and hand tighten the nuts in a star pattern.
• Lower the car, then tighten fully, again in a star pattern.
• Check them again after 50 to 100 km.
Doughnut spares aren't built for highway speeds or long trips, so get to a shop soon.
On a busy highway shoulder with traffic flying past, call CAA and wait somewhere safe instead. Knowing when not to do it yourself is part of the skill.
And if you haven't booked your winter tire swap yet, do it this week. Shops fill up fast once the first snow hits.
