Styling Advice I think I've been wearing my dress pants too low for basically my entire adult life

This feels like one of those things you suddenly notice and then can't unsee.

Pretty much every pair of dress pants I've owned sits somewhere around my hips because that's where I've always worn pants. Never questioned it.

Recently tried on a pair with a noticeably higher rise and they sat closer to my actual waist. At first I felt like somebody's grandfather.

Then I put a jacket on.

Everything looked... better?

My legs looked longer, there wasn't this weird gap of shirt between the jacket button and trousers and they were more comfortable when I sat down. After about ten minutes they stopped feeling unusually high too.

Now I'm looking at pleated trousers as well and I'm worried I'm about six months away from carrying a pocket watch.

For anyone who switched from modern low/mid-rise dress pants to a more traditional higher rise, did you stick with it?

Also curious whether you went pleated or flat front. I'm warming up to pleats but I haven't fully crossed that bridge yet.

Fit Feedback Just thrifted this jacket on flea market, size too big?

I can't help to buy this piece cuz its only 2€ and the texture quality might be also pretty good. But I'm a layman at suits stuff, can any expert tell me whether it's too big? Or maybe oversize outfit style will do the trick?

🫪

I'm also quite curious about this brand, if anyone has the relevant information, much appreciated:)

Styling Advice Wife and i are having a personal photoshoot for the autumn season and i thrifted some clothes for it. It feels like its missing something. Any advice on what to add or maybe change?

My wardrobe is that of a pretty basic guy in his 30's. Never been strong in the styling department; but wanted to do better because my wife is rather excited to take some fall photos this year.

Thank you in advance for any positive suggestions or critiques.

Fit Feedback Second Attempt to Dress Better

First few photos are what I am trying on now and the last is my last post on this sub. I took y’all’s recommendations and went with a longer pair of trousers and these actually fit my waistline a bit better too! I need a skinny belt for these but I think overall im not mad at the outfit but something just isn’t clicking for me…

Are my trousers too long and wide? I feel as thought they might need tailoring to make them a little less wide at the thighs and maybe a bit shorter in length? y’all let me know.

I also know that I should invest in some loafers to compliment the more casual look and to make it seem a little more organics than the pointy derbies. I was thinking of Meermin for loafers, I want quality but not rly looking to break the bank. Anyways looking for any and all criticism!

Also I am thinking of investing in a Barbour Bedale as it might suit better the style im going for rather than the rider jacket I have on but I like the jacket so its what I chose for the pic. Should I bother in getting jackets now or focus on getting more essentials first? I only really have this shirt and trousers and the ones from my last pic lol.

Question Can anyone help figure out why my tie keeps slipping down?

Post image

I used a full Windsor knot. Both tie and shirt are from Suitsupply. No matter how tight I make it, my tie keeps slipping down immediately. Any ideas how to fix this?

Discussion Is Uniqlo overrated or worth it?

• Upvotes

I have recently bumped into uniqlo, because i was looking for clothes that are well made, fit well and hold over time without breaking the bank.

Now some people on here say it has fallen off, AI says its best in its category.

Would you recommend it or not?

If not, what are some good alternatives.

  3. Tee: Brave Star Sumo XH 3XL
  4. Over-shirt: Brooklyn Industries Corduroy XXL

7: Boot: Vintage Ralph Lauren x Rancourt Chukka MiUSA Sz 13.

  1. Watch: Vintage 70s Citizen Eagle 7

  2. Bag: not sure: it’s the first nice bag I bought when I got my first decent gig ca 2011: Says “Mori” on the bag and has a leather tag says “528”

10: Fragrance: Tom Ford Oud Wood

I’ve owned all these clothes for at least several years.

Vitals:

6’3” 260lbs. 41yo

Chest: 48L
Shoulder: 21”
Torso Length: 30”
Arm: 27”
Waist (natural): 42/44”
Inseam: 32”
Shoe: 13 US

Philosophy:

I love vintage high quality clothing. As I have aged I’ve put away my skinny and slim cut jeans and suits. I focus on quality made clothes made from whole fibers (no plastics). I focus on every day fits that have a timeless appeal. Pretty much any golden era pre-NAFTA American brand or those that copy them. I try as best as I can to avoid clothing made in China, South Asia, or Pacific Islands. Those clothings aren’t universally bad, but if I’m paying heritage quality prices, I’d rather purchase things from Western brands with decent labor practices and quality assurance.

Clothing Review Permanent Style Linen Overshirt Review

https://shop.permanentstyle.com/products/the-ps-overshirt

Verdict: I kept this item and I am initially happy with it. It’ll allow me to layer in the warm weather. It’ll allow me to maintain a cleaner and more refined aesthetic without stepping up in formality to something like a hopsack jacket. I don’t really care about price, but if you’re keeping an eye on your money then I can’t argue this shirt is (even close to) $500 better than throwing on an existing relaxed shirt as an overshirt. Finally, I’m not sure I can see myself dry cleaning this and I’m afraid how much it might shrink if I wash and hang dry.

Collar: Permanent Style seemingly always does a nice job with collars. This collar has enough strength to stand up well when unbuttoned and optionally lets you pop the back of the collar while the collar points remain flat (if you so choose). A normal shirt worn as an overshirt will primarily let you down here with a sloppy collapsing collar.

Fabric/Fit/Silhouette: Apparently this is a 290g Irish linen, which feels light and breathable enough to layer in warm weather. However, unlike a normal shirt, it is stiff enough to provide structure and clean lines (haven’t washed it or truly worn it yet, so hopefully that doesn’t change). The cut seems to be fairly straight/clean and somehow provides excellent freedom of movement, which is something I often struggle with…maybe it’s the armhole shape and/or the box pleat, but I’m impressed.

Pockets: Contributing to the clean look are the pockets. The chest pockets don’t have a bulky patch pocket visible on the outside. The hip pockets are nearly invisible. Plus you get a bonus interior pocket. Yes, the chest pocket flaps provide interest, but in general, the pockets largely fade into the background.

Buttons: The buttons look nice and importantly they’re large enough to differentiate it from a normal shirt without looking comically/inappropriately large.

Length: This is about as long as my longer shirts, which places it around 3/4 down my seat. I quickly tried it on with an untucked tee and the lower/mid rise denim I happened to be lounging in, which left me wishing it was a touch longer. However, I may feel differently with my higher rise trousers and a tucked in top. Notably the hem is flat, which once again differentiates it from a normal shirt being worn as an overshirt.

Size: I wear a large. I’m 5-10.5, 155 lbs, 39 inch chest, and 31 inch waist.

Question Wedding suit

• Upvotes

I’m attending a summer wedding and planning to wear a black blazer, a white shirt, navy dress trousers, brown leather dress shoes, and a matching brown belt.
Do these colors work well together, or would it look odd to combine a black blazer with navy trousers?

Hello all,

Looking to get wool trousers and I looked to SuitSupply as I’ve had many items from them in the past and they always did me right. This is my first time with these items/pants and I wanted to see if you think they fit properly and which ones to keep, return, or just tailor.

These will just be everyday use trousers, not for office, I’m a returning student so I’ll be wearing this to school and outings with friends mainly.

Disregard the white socks and enjoy my Lewis Hamilton pose.

My specs:
- Height: 5’8”
- Wt: 180 Lbs
- Waist: 30”
- Pant Length: 30”
- Tops: Medium

Pic 1. SuitSupply Black Wide Leg Tapered Wool - 30S
Pic 2. SuitSupply Brown Straight Leg Wool - 30S
Pic 3. Haggar Premium Flex Stretch Straight - 30x30

Top: SuitSupply Black Merino Crewneck
Shoes: Meermin Softcalf Black

Styling Advice Is a 36 inch inseam too big for someone who is 5'9/5'10 if I want my jeans baggy?

Was recently looking online and found this beautiful pair of 36x36 jeans that are well below retail and hard to find. For reference I love my clothes baggy but at my height would a 36 inch inseam be TOO baggy or do you think it would still work? I roughly fit into a 36 waist (I might be slightly lower but it works and I can wear them without a belt) so the waist is no issue I'm mainly concerned about the length

Question Meermin 514511 brown softcalf, different shade color?

Thumbnail

Just purchased these from meermin’s website but I just noticed each shoe is a different slight shade color from each other. Does this warrant for an exchange or customer service conversation? I’m kind of annoyed because this is already my 2nd pair as I had to exchange the first for a bigger size (half size up).

What do yall think? Maybe just my OCD lol

Styling Advice Am I wrong for always wanting to tuck in my shirt?

Thumbnail
gallery
1.8k Upvotes

I'm very new to dressing nicer so please feel free to flame me in the comments for being dumb. Also, please ignore the wrinkly pants I do not wear them out like that I only took these pictures for reddit and couldn't be bothered to iron them.

I always prefer to tuck in my shirts, because it seems to create a more masculine silhouette. However, with certain tops it seems like more of a faux pas (cable knit sweaters I've heard it's definitely a no-no for but I hate how it looks untucked).

I'm buying clothes that are comfy for me (and a lot of what I own is thrifted) but since I have wider shoulders and generally long/narrow torso (I'm on the heavier side rn so it's not as much of a problem but when I lose weight its very bad) I often feel like most sweaters and shirts I own look baggy around the middle, and tuck to compensate for that. Is this all in my head, is tucking ok for this purpose, or do I need to buy better clothes/tailor my clothes?

Question Im trying to move away from backpack when im on campus, or just wanting to have my stuff on me as im out and about, what are my main options?

I never really worried about having a bag other than a backpack but i havw been thinkin about having a sling bag or messenger bag dont know much about what to buy or other styles

If i had to pick a vibe i would say outdoorsy or like brown leather, and it hopefully can fit a laptop. But if big bags are out and its mostly like small slings i pad should be fine

Question What colour trousers should I buy next?

What colour formal trousers should I buy next? I only have dark-coloured ones: black, navy blue, and grey.

Should I go for a lighter colour, like cream or beige? And should I add more colours to my shirts?

Also, what colour formal shoes would go well with cream or beige trousers?

My current shirts: white, dark green, maroon, sky blue, navy blue, light pink, and blue-and-white pinstripes.

Question Clarks Boots

Post image
6 Upvotes

Out shopping for new shoes. I work in a retail sales, which require somewhat smart casual attire. I know Clarks has great shoes, both in terms of quality and comfort. Wondering how do the desert boots hold up for wearing while working 8+ hours. Or if there are other shoes/brands better suited for that.
TIA!

Post image
9 Upvotes

I’m going to wear this to a wedding in November in the UK. I do not want a white shirt tho. I was thinking maybe a deep purple or burgundy or navy blue tie - but which shirt could work?. I would consider a striped shirt, just vertical not sure. Any idea?

The photo colour temperature is not great. This is the item is here

EDIT: the colours are for tie only.
