Question For Genx Who Left Those Porn Mags in the Woods?

It seems to be a universal GenX experience to have found discarded porn mags in the woods. I know I did. Did you? And, who the hell leaves a porn mag in the woods? Playboy. Oui. And more gynecological publications. Was that as universal a GenX experience as I think it is? Or did I hang out in areas where more periodical porn was randomly discarded in the shrubbery than the norm?

Working on a theory .

Was at a brewery with a bunch of X friends and then conversation switched to pets.

Then we noticed that everyone’s cell phone screen was pictures of their dogs, not their kids ! lol.😆

Is this a Gen X thing ?

History & Culture It's Saturday, October 17th 1987. What were you doing?

You got that right. It's Saturday October 17th, but it's 1987.

What would typical you have done on this night? How old were you if you care to say, and where would you be, or what were you watching/listening to?

Remember that Fred Dryer was and is one of the coolest mofos around. No way in hell he’d color his hair or fuck around with implants or some shit.

Nostalgia When you were a kid was there always an opened box of baking soda in the fridge?

Post image

My mom always kept a an opened box in the fridge. She never baked anything or did anything else with it but it was always in the fridge.

---In the 1970s, Church & Dwight (the parent company of Arm & Hammer) was facing a decline in sales because home baking was becoming less common. To sell more product, they launched a massive advertising blitz pitching a brand-new concept: placing an opened box of baking soda inside the refrigerator to absorb food odors---

---By the 1980s, the ad campaign was so successful that more than half of American households had an open box sitting in their fridge. The ads even encouraged consumers to replace the box every 30 days and pour the old box down the drain to freshen garbage disposals—a genius strategy to keep people buying it month after month.---

I didn't know about the marketing campaign but my mom sure must have.

Nostalgia The smells that take me back...

Yesterday while hiking I walked past a guy smoking a pipe. Ahhh, the memories came flooding back of when I would be sitting in the back of my dad's Datsun B210, windows rolled up, listening to Waylon and Willie. Other smells that were huge...Polo cologne, arcades, fried food at the state fair, newspapers, cigar smoke, cloves, old engines. You?

Question For Genx Cinnamon paper and toothpicks

Checking to see if this was just a California thing. In middle school (1982-83) kids used to sell sheets of paper that had been soaked in cinnamon oil for kids to tear off pieces of paper and chew them. This came after the toothpicks were banned. It was like a quarter for a sheet of cinnamon paper.

Aging Turned 48 Today

Been a good day and all, and I don’t have anything to complain about, but it’s really sobering realizing that I have more birthdays behind me than ahead of me. Honestly, I don’t worry about myself dying—that’ll happen and it’ll be the end of it. I worry about watching loved ones go before me being left behind, especially my wife. We don’t have kids and are the best of friends (I’ve very lucky to have such an amazing partner) and I just don’t like the thought of being without her. I knew you all would get it so thanks for letting me just say this somewhere.

Question For Genx Elderly folks , Hoarders, advice needed.

My folks are almost 75 and 80. They are hoarders. I’m an only child and they are very touchy sensitive about approaching the subject of getting rid of items.

My old bedroom is not able to be navigated. I can’t open the door. Spare bedroom is the same. Along with living room, sunroom and garage.

They now have rented 2 storage units they also filled up. How do I approach such a sensitive topic. They get so upset when I do.

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you. 🙏

…..I know…
…..And. ….Fuck…whatever …who cares….👀

Nostalgia How 18-Year-Old Girls Told 19-Year-Old Boys They Liked Them in 1991

Post image
16 Upvotes

You guys seemed to like yesterday's love letter from 1985, so here's another one from the archives.

This one is from August 30, 1991 (I know the date because I still have my old diary entry from that night), when I was 19 and she was probably 17 or 18. She was really cute, and we'd danced together and made out a little bit that night at our local small-town teen nightclub. This made my closeted secret boyfriend jealous enough to call me a poseur, which, as I'm sure you'll all recall, was one of the worst possible things you could call somebody back then.

The Latchkey Years No phone growing up in 70s/80s?

My wife told me last night they didnt have a home phone until around '89 or '90. She lived in rural oregon. Her neighbors had them, so they were available but they didnt have one. I never really heard of people not having a phone during my lifetime. We are both about 50. Anyone else have no phone in their house growing up?

Aging When do we update hair color on our driver’s license?

As our hair becomes salt and pepper with shades of silver and gray, at what point do we change the color on our license to reflect that? Overall, my hair is still brown, but I have quite a bit of silver and white around my face. Do we have to update it, or is this like our weight, and they just let us stay our “goal weight” for decades even when it’s clearly not accurate?

Music I’m over Zeppelin.

Hopped in the car today and Zeppelin was on the radio. Never much a fan to begin with and after listening to them for over 40 years I immediately switched the station.

Having said that, Pat Benatar “Heartbreaker” came on and I cranked that shit to 11.
