Mod Approved New photo megathread

That’s me on the left and my sister and a dog I do not remember. I would say I was about six or seven years old, which would make this 1974 or 1974. This photograph was taken on the porch of the feed shed of a small store my parents owned in Eastern Kentucky.

Midlife Crisis Stuff Actual friends?

Do you have any current friends anymore? I've got my work buddies, my wife, our friendly neighbors, and the the people from when I was young that I interact with on the socials, but an actual, flesh-and-blood, live, in-person, current **friend**? A person whose primary attachment to me is based on common interests/personalities instead of proximity or employment? Nope. All those others are primarily connected to me for other reasons, not friendship. If I leave my job or we sell our house, etc. that connection is severed and I'll never talk to those people again. What I mean is, it's the circumstances holding us together, not the friendship. Got any friends you hang out with because you want to hang out with them, not because they need to borrow your hedge trimmers or it's your lunch break?

Question For Genx Who Left Those Porn Mags in the Woods?

1.3k Upvotes

It seems to be a universal GenX experience to have found discarded porn mags in the woods. I know I did. Did you? And, who the hell leaves a porn mag in the woods? Playboy. Oui. And more gynecological publications. Was that as universal a GenX experience as I think it is? Or did I hang out in areas where more periodical porn was randomly discarded in the shrubbery than the norm?

History & Culture It's Saturday, October 17th 1987. What were you doing?

You got that right. It's Saturday October 17th, but it's 1987.

What would typical you have done on this night? How old were you if you care to say, and where would you be, or what were you watching/listening to?

Question For Genx I need GenX 's help with a gift for my daughter

• Upvotes

My daughter is turning 18 soon. We have long referred to her as an "honorary" member of Gen X. She has a very "whatever" attitude. She was a bit of a free range kid, walking home alone from school starting in third grade and riding her bike all over town. She loves 80's music and can often be found wearing a vintage concert T.

So I'm trying to think of a really great gift to commemorate this milestone birthday. It doesn't have to be GenX/80's related, but that's where my mind is heading. Maybe a "mixtape" on a thumb drive with songs that are meaningful to her?

Any other suggestions? What have you given your kids for milestone birthdays? I know cash will be the answer, and we will give her some, but I want something else to go with it. Could be sentimental or funny.

Cinemax after 10 you can see if you hit both buttons on side of channel…sometimes then tech of wavering arm up and down horizontally you could get in phase almost to minimize lines interference

That is all

Question For Genx Elderly folks , Hoarders, advice needed.

My folks are almost 75 and 80. They are hoarders. I’m an only child and they are very touchy sensitive about approaching the subject of getting rid of items.

My old bedroom is not able to be navigated. I can’t open the door. Spare bedroom is the same. Along with living room, sunroom and garage.

They now have rented 2 storage units they also filled up. How do I approach such a sensitive topic. They get so upset when I do.

Any advice would be appreciated.
Thank you. 🙏

…..I know…
…..And. ….Fuck…whatever …who cares….👀

...because of the sopranos, the wire, mad men, saul, thrones, breaking bad, west wing, er... i struggle to find anything of quality (top tier writing/strong characters), to contently waste hours binging.

...suggestions? (new or not new)

(snl & law & order 1-20, are my emotional support show, whenever there's a drought.)

Working on a theory .

Was at a brewery with a bunch of X friends and then conversation switched to pets.

Then we noticed that everyone’s cell phone screen was pictures of their dogs, not their kids ! lol.😆

Is this a Gen X thing ?

Question For Genx Your bedroom

• Upvotes

Last night I started watching the series Castle Rock (am enjoying it, but that’s beside the point).

When Henry Dever returns to his mother’s house and into his old bedroom, the bedroom, of course is perfectly intact, supposedly just the way he left it, still with its baseball theme. But of course, the house is a huge old 3 story.

Did any of you yourselves or even maybe someone you knew have a bedroom that was preserved after you left for college? Did you not take your bed and your decor with you when you left?

Aging Turned 48 Today

Been a good day and all, and I don’t have anything to complain about, but it’s really sobering realizing that I have more birthdays behind me than ahead of me. Honestly, I don’t worry about myself dying—that’ll happen and it’ll be the end of it. I worry about watching loved ones go before me being left behind, especially my wife. We don’t have kids and are the best of friends (I’ve very lucky to have such an amazing partner) and I just don’t like the thought of being without her. I knew you all would get it so thanks for letting me just say this somewhere.

Question For Genx Cinnamon paper and toothpicks

Checking to see if this was just a California thing. In middle school (1982-83) kids used to sell sheets of paper that had been soaked in cinnamon oil for kids to tear off pieces of paper and chew them. This came after the toothpicks were banned. It was like a quarter for a sheet of cinnamon paper.

Old Person Yells At Cloud The grocery store rearranges itself every six months now and I am done learning new floor plans

1.0k Upvotes

I have lived in the same town for fifteen years. The main grocery chain has moved the bread aisle four times. Four. They shifted pasta to where the cleaning supplies were, put cleaning supplies where seasonal used to be, and now seasonal lives in some kind of floating pop-up situation near the front.

This is not about efficiency. Someone in an office is getting paid to justify their job by making us all wander through impulse buy territory hunting for black beans.

I finally snapped last week and asked an employee where they hid the peanut butter. She said, and I quote, "Have you tried the app?" No. I have not tried the app. I tried learning where things are, which used to be a reasonable life skill, and now that knowledge expires like a television password.

My parents had the same store layout for thirty years. The manager knew their names. There was a butcher who would cut things to order. I am not asking for much. I just want to walk in, get ingredients for one dinner, and leave without needing a map and a software update.

Anyone else stockpile favorites when they find them just to avoid the scavenger hunt next time?

Nostalgia The smells that take me back...

Yesterday while hiking I walked past a guy smoking a pipe. Ahhh, the memories came flooding back of when I would be sitting in the back of my dad's Datsun B210, windows rolled up, listening to Waylon and Willie. Other smells that were huge...Polo cologne, arcades, fried food at the state fair, newspapers, cigar smoke, cloves, old engines. You?

The Latchkey Years No phone growing up in 70s/80s?

My wife told me last night they didnt have a home phone until around '89 or '90. She lived in rural oregon. Her neighbors had them, so they were available but they didnt have one. I never really heard of people not having a phone during my lifetime. We are both about 50. Anyone else have no phone in their house growing up?
