Games Chiptune Hero

I've been working on Chiptune Hero, a Guitar Hero-inspired rhythm game for the original Game Boy and Game Boy Color.

I started prototyping in gbstudio then finished with custom engine. I needed the frametime to be Quick.

I hope I don break some subredit rule with this.

It features 15 songs, 3 difficulty levels, link cable multiplayer, and online leaderboards using QR codes :)

You can also create your own songs and charts with a separate editor.

The game is free, and I'd love if you give it a try.

Going away on holiday and I don’t want to be on my phone too much, so I’ve dug out my Zelda themed GBA SP with Pokemon Emerald, along with my three favourite albums of 2026 on cassette. 👍

FunnyPlaying ITA Kit

Shell is one of the soft touch ones from ExtremeRate. It feels pretty nice to hold and looks great, especially in person.

Top and bottom stickers were designed by me and printed on regular printer paper with scotch tape over it, then cut out with my amazing X-acto knife skills, which is why they look awful.

Overall happy with how it turned out and excited to revisit the MMZ games on this thing

Troubleshooting GBP: Buttons (A & RIGHT) not working

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Hey everyone.

Any clue, why those buttons don't work? Pressing right or A does nothing.

Also, the contrast/brightness wheel doesn't work after modding the GBP with an IPS display, but that's likely because of that and has nothing to do with those buttons.

As you can see, i scratched a little bit off of the board where likely water has entered the board...

Troubleshooting Game Boy Color GameShark suddenly showing stars instead of game names — corrupted database? How do I fix it?

Thumbnail

Hey everyone!

I have an original GameShark Video Game Enhancer for the Game Boy Color/Game Boy Pocket (transparent cartridge).

Everything was working perfectly until I enabled a Professor Oak battle cheat and a Mewtwo encounter cheat in Pokémon Red. The game froze, so I restarted my Game Boy Advance SP.
Now, whenever I start the GameShark, it boots normally and says “35 Games Found,” but every game name has been replaced with rows of stars, checkmarks, and strange symbols.
Previously, it displayed all the normal game names, including Pokémon Red/Blue, 102 Dalmatians, etc.
Here’s what I’ve tested:
Pokémon Red works perfectly fine without the GameShark.

The GameShark still boots and displays its normal logo.
It still recognizes 35 games.
I can scroll through the corrupted game list.
Pressing A on an entry still opens the option to add a cheat code.
Restarting the Game Boy hasn’t fixed the issue.
I’m wondering if the GameShark’s internal cheat database or memory became corrupted when the game froze.

Has anyone experienced this before? Is there a way to restore the original game names and built-in cheat codes without reflashing the firmware or buying another GameShark?

I’d really appreciate any help, especially from anyone familiar with these older Game Boy GameSharks.
I’ve attached pictures of the GameShark cartridge and what the corrupted menu looks like.

Thanks!

This little oddish is amazing 10 straight turns with stun spore and flipping heads to paralyze. They were able to build Venusaur on the bench and win the match! I just started the game and am still using the premade deck until I can build up cards.

Games I tracked loose Pokemon cart asking prices on eBay daily for 3 months. They've been flat to slightly down.

Everyone assumes Pokemon carts only go up, so I compared the first 30 days of my tracking against the last 30. Loose carts, US eBay Buy It Now listings, average of the daily median asking price.

Game Jul 19 - Aug 18 Sep 17 - Oct 16 Change Listings per day
Emerald $243 $230 -5% ~25
Crystal $179 $168 -6% ~16
Ruby $99 $97 -2% ~13
Sapphire $98 $98 0% ~15
Gold $74 $71 -5% ~17
Yellow $69 $70 +2% ~18
Red $69 $69 0% ~16
Silver $67 $63 -6% ~15
Blue $64 $62 -3% ~17

FireRed is around $115 but I only started tracking it in late September, so no comparison yet.

What stood out: - Nothing moved more than 6% either way. If anything the trend is slightly down. - Emerald is still in a league of its own at ~1.4x Crystal. - Gen 1 and Gen 2 carts all sit in the same $60-70 band.

How it's measured: new listings matching each game, loose carts only, excluding lots/bundles, Japanese and PAL copies, and anything labeled repro, bootleg or fake. Days with fewer than 8 matching listings are left out.

Big caveats: these are asking prices, not sold prices, so actual sales land lower. And fakes that aren't labeled as fakes can still slip in, which is a real issue with Pokemon carts.

Disclosure: the tracker is a project of mine (CresvaMent, it does eBay deal alerts). Daily numbers for each game are here if you want to dig in: https://cresvament.com/deals?ref=reddit

After several days I managed to fix this terribly corroded play it loud blue. It did stink like hell and the front board was eaten. Had to reconstruct maaaany traces and reflow almost everything on both PCBs but I'm super satisfied now. Is it really this rare? I didn't find too many on Ebay. Bought it for ca. 25-27 USD.

Troubleshooting Pokemon Emerald - Save Failed. Checking Back up memory error.

Recently found my old pokemon game and got the battery replaced. When starting a new profile and trying to save, this error keeps occurring. Having never really dealt with these kinds of issues, I was unsure where to go since the info on this seems kind of limited. Was wondering if anyone had this occur and what kind of method they used to solve it? Please let me know :)

Not really looking to get the save back, more or less trying to fix the problem to have it fully functional again for a new play through

Worse news. After trying to reflow all chips and soldering another battery. It was all in vain because I discovered the save only dissapears when the cartridge is removed from the console. Any idea why does that happen?

Games Native Super Smash Land PORT for GBA

I’ve been working on a native GBA port of the game *Super Smash Land*, and it’s nearly finished (I know the game was originally intended for the classic Game Boy, but running it on that hardware is virtually impossible). I realize this might not generate a huge buzz, as it’s not a game many people remember, but ever since it came out, I’ve been dying to see it running on real hardware—so I felt the time was right to give it a shot and share it with you all. I’ve tested it on an emulator and it works, as well as on real hardware (as shown in the video) using a SuperCard MiniSD (I’m not sure how it performs with other flashcards). If this post gets a positive response, I’ll release the FULL ROM next week.

Just a quick note: I want to give credit to the original creator, Dan Fornace, who made the game for PC. https://www.supersmashland.com/ I hope you enjoy it!

Questions Planning on getting a Gameboy Colour in the future and had a question about the batteries

I'm planning to sometime down the line (sometime this year) get a GBC to be able to play og GB and GBC games, and wanted to ask how long it would last on 2 alkaline batteries

I know the batteries are prone to leak the acid and that however I always take them out when they're drained and change them out for fresh so there's not really a chance for that to happen

I did look up online that they usually last around 10-12 hours, however I wanted to actually ask people who have the original GBC how long it typically lasts for them so I have a rough estimate, thank you! :3

Troubleshooting Scratched motherboard, can I fix it?

Looks like a broke 3, maybe 4 connections here, any ideas what components I'd need to solder to each other to have the sound working again? Honestly seemingly one of the worst places to scratch.

Im not experienced enough to be using magnet wire to fix this, am trying to trace using this picture and the scans from RetroSix and am having a real tough time figuring it out.

Wondering if anyone here has done circuit trace repair in a similar area.

Shopping/Haul Went to a used game shop in Japan

Went to a secondhand shop near me to look at SPs. Rough conversions at today's rate (160 yen to the dollar):

- Famicom color SP, console only, 66,000 yen (about $410)

- Pearl Pink, boxed, 60,500 yen (about $380)

- Onyx Black, boxed, 55,000 yen (about $345)

- Boktai "Django Red", scratched, 55,000 yen (about $345)

- Toys R Us limited, scratched, 55,000 yen (about $345)

- Onyx Black / Pearl Blue / Platinum Silver, console only, with scratches, 29,700 yen each (about $185)

The handwritten notes on the tags say things like "scratches on the body" and "mint". A scratched SP was around 5,000 yen (about $30) here not that many years ago.
