Modded After 23 years of Duty…
I have my GBA SP since December 2003. For 3 years, I used it with an open battery compartment and a swollen battery.
A few weeks ago, I saw a modded GBA SP on Reddit with the funnyplaying battery pack and made a decision.
What I did:
IPS screen M2
Atomic Purple Mirror Shell
Black buttons
Clear black rubber membrane
Speaker
Battery pack
Everything straight from funnyplaying’s website.
I’m very happy with the outcome, especially for the price. Luckily, I already had a good-condition GBA SP.
What do you think of the color/design combo?

Games LeafGreen (AGB-E02-30) shows only “GAME BOY” with no Nintendo logo on GBA, SP. All traces check out. Is the ROM dead?
Hi all,
I’m trying to fix my French copy of Pokémon LeafGreen (AGB-BPGF). The cartridge has never shown the Nintendo logo for me. I only get the “GAME BOY” logo, and the game never boots. It does the same on a GBA and a SP, so I’m confident the cart is the problem.
What I’ve done
- Cleaned the gold contacts with isopropyl alcohol several times and with a white eraser.
- Reflowed the legs of both U1 and U2 with flux, then cleaned off the flux. No solder bridges and no visible corrosion under magnification.
- Continuity-tested the edge connector against U1. Every contact I tested (all except 2 and 3, which I don’t expect to reach the ROM) is connected to at least one leg of U1.
- Checked for shorts between neighbouring contacts and between VDD (pin 1) and GND (pin 32). Nothing is shorted.
My reasoning
The Nintendo logo is read from the ROM header, so a cart that can’t be read shows only “GAME
BOY”. Since the traces and solder joints look fine, I suspect the mask ROM itself is dead, but a multimeter can’t confirm that
Questions
- Is there anything else I should check without a reader? (decoupling caps C1–C3? an internal fault?)
- Does a dead mask ROM like this one usually show these symptoms?
Thanks for any advice!

Other Not sure which print your copy is? Feedback wanted on a small reference page
Hi all,
ever found a copy online and weren't sure which edition or print it is? That's what my small project Edinota tries to help with, and I'd like to know if it actually does.
It's an early, non-public preview: Super Mario Land, Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue are covered in depth (US prints), a few more games as early drafts. Every statement links to its source. Private and non-commercial: no ads, no prices, no accounts.
How to try it
Find a US copy of one of the three games online (eBay, auction, shop, anything with photos).
Open the game, go to "Identify a copy" and answer the questions from the photos:
Send me the listing link and the result as a comment below, by DM or to contact@edinota.com. I'll check each one myself.
"One of two" is a fine result if the photos don't show everything. Any thoughts on whether it's useful, where you got stuck or what's wrong are very welcome. I'd rather hear it now than after launch.
Thanks!
Jan
Questions Custom Tetris Cart
So I'm wanting to make my own special gameboy tetris cartridges using the rosy retrospection romhack. My issue is trying to find the right cartridge PCB's. Since it's tetris I only need a 32kb one, but with the romhack it does save highscores so I would like to either have one with a battery or the fram chips perferably. Inside gadgets has pretty much exactly what I need as they have 32kb one at a fair price, but no save function. Any help would be appreciated finding what I need that will for sure work properly. Trying to find something well below $20 USD per PCB.

Games Super Smash Land GBA is out! Downloads are live
It's finally here! The files are up and you can download **Super Smash Land for GBA** for free right now.
What you can download:
- **.gba**: for emulators (mGBA recommended) or a real Game Boy Advance with a flashcart
- **.cia**: for 3DS / 2DS with custom firmware
What's in this release:
- Arcade, Endless and Versus modes
- Mario, Kirby, Link and Pikachu, plus unlockables
- Two camera modes (fixed 1X / close 2X, switch with SELECT)
- Save support (SRAM)
- Link Cable multiplayer **(BETA)**
**A quick note on the multiplayer:** it works in mGBA, but I haven't tested it on real hardware with a physical link cable yet. If you have two GBAs and a cable, please try it and tell me how it goes!
3DS tip: hold START or SELECT while the game boots for sharp, non-blurry pixels.
This port started as a crazy idea: take Dan Fornace's PC demake, decompile it, rewrite it in C and get it running on a real GBA. Seeing it boot on my own console was amazing, and now you can play it too.
Found a bug? Leave a comment here and I'll check it out.
Thanks for following the project, and have fun smashing!
*Original game by Dan Fornace. Port by EmCamsito. Free, non-commercial fan project. All characters belong to Nintendo.*

Troubleshooting Copy save from fake cartridge?
Hoping to get some direction here. I have a bootleg copy of Emerald, about 300 hours (plenty of early grinding and idle time) and ~70% through a full living dex, but the fake cart doesn't have an RTC, so I can't do berries, Shoal Cavern, or events.
I finally got myself an EZ Flash Omega DE and attempted to copy everything over using the GB Epilogue. The ROM works, but the save won't transfer.
From what I've read some bootleg carts use different memory for the saves and don't directly transfer. Does anyone know of a way to pull such a save and convert it to work? The Epilogue will pull a save, but I can't get anything to read/use/open it.
TIA for anything on this. Been playing this Emerald off and on for 2+ years and would love not having to restart.

Questions Im looking for new gb/gbc games to play!
There's the games I have right now. I'd prefer something around or under $30 cad. Oh and preferably with no save battery because i don't know how to replace it and the closest store would replace the battery for $20

Troubleshooting Chinese Pokémon Emerald Rogue GBA cartridge failed FlashGBX write
Hi everyone!
I bought a Chinese reproduction GBA cartridge containing Pokémon Emerald Rogue from AliExpress. I wanted to update it to Pokémon Emerald Rogue v2.2.1, so I backed up the original ROM and attempted to flash the updated version using an Aurioxin GBxCart RW v1.3 with FlashGBX.
Unfortunately, the write failed, and now the cartridge is no longer playable. Even worse, I can't seem to write any ROM to it, including the original backup that was working perfectly before the update attempt.
My hardware and cartridge details:
- Flasher: Aurioxin GBxCart RW v1.3
- Software: FlashGBX
- Cartridge: Chinese Pokémon Emerald Rogue reproduction from AliExpress
- PCB marking: AGB-E05-01
- Flash chip marking: appears to be MSP54LV256
- Target ROM: Pokémon Emerald Rogue v2.2.1
- Original ROM backup: Yes, backed up before attempting the update
I've been trying to troubleshoot the issue, but nothing has worked so far. I've:
- Cleaned the cartridge contacts.
- Tried a different USB-to-USB-C cable.
- Tried using a different computer.
- Attempted to write the original ROM backup back to the cartridge.
I also checked the available FlashGBX profiles, but I couldn't find one that clearly matches both my PCB and flash chip. I found profiles mentioning MSP54LV256, but they seem to be intended for different PCB types.
At this point, I don't know whether the problem is an incompatible FlashGBX profile, a limitation of this particular reproduction cartridge, or an issue with the flash memory itself.
Does anyone have experience with this kind of cartridge or know how I could recover it?
Specifically:
- Is there a compatible profile for the AGB-E05-01 PCB with an MSP54LV256 chip?
- Could using the wrong profile cause the cartridge to become unreadable or unwritable?
- Is there a way to restore the cartridge without replacing the flash chip?
- Why would the original ROM backup fail to write back, even though it worked before?
I'd appreciate any suggestions. I can provide photos of the PCB, the chip markings, and any FlashGBX error messages if needed.
Thanks in advance!
Update 1: when i try to erase the data from the cart, it works well. The problem persists with the writing part.
Update 2: save data can be written with no issues

Games My Childhood Dream Collection
In my childhood i only get like 15 games in 5 years. Lot of games i finished was traded (like Game Stop) and swaped or loan from friends for a week or from like blockbuster for a couple of days.
My dream was to have all the games i want. About 25 years later i began to collect a Game Boy with usb-charging-battery and some games. In den last 2 years i collected much more. My Goal are 100 Games, now i own 90. I also got many more items:
Game Boy IPS
FunnyPlaying Game Boy Color
2x Chromatic White
Camera
Accu Pack (works with new eneloop batteries)
Carry Case
Light May
4-Player Adapter
Headphones
Link Cable
My favourite game Metroid has a reproduction of the Box and inlay, manual was from the 90s in my basement and the game is like the other ones from ebay, all with cases. I have the map of Mystic Quest and four nice tin boxes. Not to forget an Everdrive GB X7.
Unfortunatelly games like mega man 4 & 5 are too expensive for me.
Money? 1000€ at least (i´m from germany).
Not shown: Game Boy Advance SP NES Style with IPS display and a Flash Card.

Questions Should I trade my GBA SP for a GBC?
Hello, recently my friend offered to trade his gbc for my gba sp. I’m considering doing the trade as I have a ds to play gba games. The gba sp is the ags 001 model. I’ve been re visiting the Pokémon games my parents used to play when they were kids. So the gbc would be nice to have. But, I realize that the gba can play gbc games. So I’m also debating if it’s worth it. What do yall think?

Questions Playing GB/GBA cartridges on TV
Is there a way I can play gameboy games on my tv with a controller? I’ve seen a GB cart reader for a computer but I’m keen to find something like the N64 transfer pak that will work with all games.
Anyone know anything?
Cheers

Not Game Boy Just a thought about the FPGBC
It saddens me how funny playing has seemed to have moved on supporting the FPGBC with firmware updates. Do you guys think with all this reverse engineering AI software now that someone will make an open source firmware for the FPGBC which will let the community update and support it?

Shopping/Haul Grandfather's Axe of a cartridge
So I was looking on eBay for a copy of Link's Awakening and this one in particular stood out to me for all the wrong reasons. The seller claims it's authentic but it really isn't so. Almost everything else makes it look like a fake. The shell just by the pictures is an immediate red flag because it's so much lighter than an official cart, as well as the fact that it's smoother than a baby's bottom. Real GB gray carts have that texture to them. So basically what I'm getting out of this is if it's "authentic" then they mean they used an original board from a beat up cart, changed the battery, and slapped it into an aftermarket shell. I don't know if this is an acceptable business practice, I mean if you're just doing it for your own copy never intending on selling it I guess it's fine, but for resale? I dunno. Either way I'm not going to buy this particular cartridge.
