I regret allowing this subreddit to scare me away from PPIs.

30M. I suffered the pain and anxiety for months as I tried every natural cure in the book. Every tea, every herbal supplement, every diet, every wedge pillow - I did it all. Some things helped, most did not. Nothing came close to the relief I felt after getting on esomeprazole (Nexium). I used them for six months to end the misery and get my life back. The taper-off was difficult, but I took it slow (another 8 weeks) and did it.

If you are suffering from acid reflux and combing through this subreddit for non-PPI cures, you are a person whose house is on fire but is refusing to use water to put it out. You don't have to stay on PPIs forever. But do yourself a favor and put the fire out. Get your life back. Then, you can sustain the post-PPI relief by making smart diet decisions and using herbal supplements that do help.

I know I'm not the first person here to say this; I'm just posting the message I wish my past self could have seen when things were really bleak.

GLP1

Hey! So I was diagnosed with chronic gastritis from chronic stress (yay) about 3 years ago. Now I’m wholly dependent on PPI’s. It’s usually managed but the past week or so it’s been so bad my throat is in bits from nighttime reflux.

Anywho- for other health reasons (long covid, POTS and severe anxiety flare) I have gained about 20kg in the past few years. I’m exercise intolerant (yay POTS) and due to my joint issues and lipoedema I need to lose some weight.

I’m curious if anyone has found GLP1 medication to NOT aggravate their GERD/gastritis. All i see is that it’s a side effect but I already have it, so I’m torn. It would really help my other health issues but I’m worried it’ll make me really unwell with my reflux issues.

Thanks!

Healing LPR without super strict diet?

Hi all,

I'm interested in hearing if anyone has had experience healing LPR WITHOUT resorting to a 100% strict diet (but still making significant changes).

I've had symptoms for ~4 months now but was only diagnosed ~ a month ago via Laryngoscope. The symptoms appeared after multiple rounds of steroids and antibiotics that were needed to resolve a sinus infection. My symptoms (in order of severity): Hoarseness, sore/irritated throat, PND, ear itchiness/pain, nasal congestion. My symptoms are always present and there appears to be NO significant change based on what I eat.

Since being diagnosed I've done a full month of taking a PPI (40mg Panto in AM) and Pepcid (40mg before bed), probiotic, taking alginates after every meal and before bed, and strictly following the acid watcher diet. I completely quit coffee, alcohol, and carbonated drinks. I also adopted all of the lifestyle changes (not eating 3-4 hours before bed, smaller portions and slower eating), sleeping raised 7 inches, walking after meals, diaphramic breathing, etc.

However, with all of these changes I feel SIGNIFICANTLY worse than I did a month ago before any treatment and even have new symptoms (frequent burping, bad taste in throat sometimes). My suspicion is that I've been much more anxious, particularly about the diet changes and the impact their having on my life (and the uncertainty of having to adhere to them forever). Almost all of my hobbies are food/beverage related: speciality coffee, wine (I was taking sommelier classes before this and have built a large collection), travel (of which food was a central component). And the vast majority of my social life revolved around dining and bars, which I have stopped doing for the last month.

In fact, the best I have felt throughout the past few months was right before starting treatment I was traveling for ~2 weeks and during that period ate almost nothing that was compliant and was having a drink or two every couple of days. This leads me to believe that mental health is even more important than diet, at least for me.

I totally accept that some amount of dietary changes are required (even though I already ate quite healthy prior to this, only had 2-3 alcoholic drinks per week max, exercised every day), but I'm curious if anyone has been able to heal without adhering 100% to a restrictive diet? For example, I'm considering the following relaxations to make it more manageable: one small cup of coffee in the morning after breakfast before taking alginate, eating out once per week choosing foods that are reasonably close to complaint (eg Risotto or Sushi), 1-2 alcoholic beverages per week (sticking to Sake now which has a ph in the mid 4s).

Especially since I see absolutely no difference in symptoms regardless of what I eat, this seems reasonable and my ENT agreed smaller adjustments should help. However, all the discussion on Reddit here seems to indicate a fully strict diet is required.

🤬 Rant about GERD The GERD is back with a vengence

I'm 62. I was originally diagnosed with GERD back when I was in my late 20's. Stress brought it on. I was told I have a lazy 'flap' at the top of my stomach to esophagus that does not fully close. I was on Prescription Prevacid (it was prescription then) at 30mg a day. It started at 2 x a day for 2 weeks then 30 mg a day which I took for 16 years. When I got Hashimoto's 10 yrs ago and gave up Gluten, Dairy and Soy, I tried to go off Prevacid and it worked. Until now. This year starting in May has been highly stressful for me and in May I got what I thought was a Cold which, for me, was highly unusual as I never get colds or flu since 2002. I've also never gotten Covid. I'm lucky. But, I had after what I was thinking was a major headcold cold and cough ended up with Silent Reflux. I didn't even know that was a thing. So, I started treating that and it got better. This last Tuesday (5 days ago) in the late afternoon I had so much pure acid back wash come rushing up my throat into my mouth and it burned. Bad. I got home, took some Tums and called it a day. I had some slight acid flux or gerd on Wed-Thur but by Friday, it was full on GERD to the point I thought I was having a heart attack. Severe stomachache which was sour, stomach pain, and a stabbing pain that went through my front above the stomach to the back just left center of the right shoulder blade. I could hardly breath. I went back on the Prevacid this am and will take 1 in the am and 1 in the pm (15 mg each) for a few days but what added insult to injury, anxiety. The health anxiety is awful!! on thinking what is wrong even though I had this before I was sure I was dying. I'm lucky, I can lay on my left side and it gets better. I slept the night and was fine but about an hour after I woke up, it started again. Sour stomach, then coughing, then pain in the stomach, let's throw in some bloating while we are at it and let's hit it with the some center back pain due to all the muscle tension from being stressed about this while we are at it. Anxiety on and off because the pain is so bad. My poor diet (too much take out food), rushing about, not paying attention to myself with attitude of I'll do better tomorrow has caught up with me. The worst of this is the pain in the right area above stomach and right shoulder blade. I can deal with the sour stomach but man oh man...I need relief. Thanks for listening. Would love if you'd comment and add moral support. Thank you

This person mentioned in r/GERD years ago doing these exercises or maneuvers and got a lot of upvotes.

Has anyone else tried this and gotten it to help?

I also have a hiatal hernia. 2cm.

I’m skinny but cannot fathom anyone being able to fit their fingers underneath the ribs.

💊 Advice on Prescription Meds Lanzoropzole/PPI Experiences

Hey guys me again, just really anxious still. This is my 4th day on meds (Lanzoropzole and an anti nausea tablet) and I’m still having flair ups after eating as well as loose stool. The only reason why I’m worried is because everyone else on here and other groups have said they’ve had no side effects and I’m just here worried out of my mind that something bad is happening.

What would really help me is people who have been on them for years or even people like me in the early days just hearing other folks stories would really help, I’m in a really dark place rn with not being able to eat properly and having flair ups all the time

Thanks again for helping me 🙂

Air/gas pressure rising into my throat while bloating

I have a lax stomach valve (it doesn’t close completely), but for years I’ve managed my reflux quite well with pantoprazole occasionally, Alflorex, and avoiding foods that trigger my symptoms. I also have a mild sorbitol intolerance. My lactose test was negative, but dairy products like yogurt and milk don’t agree with me, so I basically never have them.
I’ve been breastfeeding for 2 years, and since my period came back about 5 months ago, my stomach symptoms have become dramatically worse.
Every month, especially during the week before my period, I get terrible bloating and a lot of stomach/gut noises. I’ve seen doctors, had ultrasounds and blood tests, and so far everything seems to be normal.
This time, though, in addition to the bloating and all the noises, I’ve started experiencing a strange and unpleasant sensation that is difficult to describe. It feels like there is pressure from air/gas moving upward all the way to my throat. It doesn’t actually hurt and it doesn’t prevent me from swallowing or breathing, but it feels extremely uncomfortable. Once I burp or the excess gas comes out, the sensation improves.
The problem is that it makes me extremely anxious, and then the anxiety seems to make everything feel even worse.
I mentioned it to my gastroenterologist, and she told me that because I have a lax stomach valve, this is most likely reflux and air/gas coming back up. I have appointments with two other gastroenterologists next week because I’d like to get some other opinions and understand what’s going on.
But right now I’m extremely anxious and scared that this feeling is going to become permanent and that I’ll never feel normal again.
Has anyone experienced something similar, especially worsening bloating/reflux or this sensation of air/pressure rising up toward the throat around their period? Did it eventually improve?

🤒 Coping with these Conditions Curious if others have the same symptoms + ENDEP advice?

Hello all,

I had gastro really bad last November and developed Functional dyspepsia from it. Though all testing came back normal.

This lead to me eventually developing GORD and oseophagitis in June.

My symptoms as of today include: bloating (almost all the time no matter what I do), mild constipation, lightheadedness, stomach sensitivity to touch, feeling full and hungry at the same time, tiredness, mild abdominal tenderness everywhere from time to time. Lowk always worried I got food poisoning from something because it always feels like early stage food poisoning.

I've unfortunately grown a very bad relationship with food now and get pretty bad anxiety when trying something new. I've cut out 90% of my diet and eat 10-20 limited foods to ease symptoms.

The specialist recommended ENDEP for my FD but my doctor was incredibly against it. I've heard it's bad for constipation so I'm curious how others reacted if they took it. Man I really want it to stop I'm sick of this.

Trying to get a dietitian but they're so expensive.

Australia btw.

Thank you for your time!

Does anyone with GERD experience constant burping, throat tightness, ear fullness, boat-like dizziness, and a racing heart?

Hi everyone,
I’m wondering if anyone here with GERD has experienced a combination of symptoms like these. I’ve been dealing with several symptoms, and I’m trying to understand whether they could be connected to GERD, the vagus nerve, or something else.
My symptoms include:
Constant burping: Frequent burping throughout the day, sometimes even when I haven’t eaten much.
Throat tightness: A sensation of tightness or something stuck in my throat (globus sensation).
Swallowing difficulties: Sometimes swallowing feels uncomfortable or difficult.
Ear fullness: A feeling of pressure or fullness in my ears.
Boat-like dizziness: A persistent rocking, swaying, or floating sensation, almost as if I’m standing on a boat.
Body heaviness: My legs sometimes feel heavy, and I experience a general feeling of heaviness throughout my body.
Elevated heart rate: I sometimes notice my heart beating faster than usual, especially when these symptoms are bothering me.
I’m particularly curious about whether GERD, LPR (silent reflux), or vagus nerve-related issues could potentially contribute to some of these symptoms.
My questions:
Has anyone with GERD experienced this combination of throat tightness, ear fullness, and persistent boat-like dizziness?
Can reflux or LPR cause ear pressure and balance-related symptoms?
Has anyone experienced a rocking or swaying sensation that feels like being on a boat rather than traditional spinning vertigo?
Has anyone experienced heavy legs, whole-body heaviness, or an elevated heart rate alongside GERD?
If you experienced similar symptoms, what helped you the most? Did treating GERD improve your dizziness and other symptoms, or did you eventually discover another underlying cause?
I’m not assuming all these symptoms are necessarily caused by GERD, but I’m interested in hearing about other people’s experiences.
Any insights, personal experiences, or suggestions about which specialists you consulted (ENT, gastroenterologist, neurologist, etc.) would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

tapering off esomeprazole [40mg, 28 pills]

2.5 months ago I finished my pylera treatment, which ended up causing me a sourish taste, which is my only symptom. my gastroenterologist prescribed me 40mg of esomeprazole, I got it for a month (28 pills), but im afraid of the rebound effect when getting off it. my doc didn't tell me much about it. how can i lay out the treatment to avoid the rebound reflux? also, I cannot get 20mg without prescription. I took the first one today morning, could someone make an example schedule or something? ): im a bit lost in the topic

🤬 Rant about GERD I'm so desperate to have my life back

I feel like everything in my life changed after being diagnosed with this, I miss when I used to drink coffee without worrying about it or eat the things I like without negative consequences later.

I just really really want to be able to eat cheese again or add garlic to my food.

I've been barely eating anything because literally most foods trigger my GERD.

I just want a cup of coffee or well seasoned food that actually tastes like something instead of all the very few bland foods I can handle.

🤒 Describing a Symptom Thick phlegm on top of throat?

Hello. I have been disgnosed with reflux a year ago by an ENT doctor. I had bad cough, throat clearing, feeling of a globus when swallowing and waking up gasping for air from time to time. ENT noticed some irritation on my vocal cords but said it’s nothing serious (when it comes to damage).

After my diagnosis I got 30mg of PPI to get rid of coughing and throat clearing. It helped. In the meantime I decided to quit coffee and eat healthier. Then I got 20mg PPI to use daily from my primary care doctor. I decided to come back to normal diet.

I also decided to gen endoscopy to see if any damage is done. Endoscopy was fine, showed no damage or no disfunction when it comes to LES. GI doctor gave me 40mg of PPI to use daily.

I did take it, then I switched back to 20mg but it started to make me feel heavy on stomach and generally not fine. I guess it was due to food sitting too long?

During all this I went through all kinds of symptoms such as burping, post nasal drip.

I decided to get off PPI, stick to normal diet. Now here’s the thing. My ONLY symptom now is this thick like phlegm on the back, on the top of my throat like it’s stuck to it. It’s not on the back „wall” of my throat. Just the top, but not above my tounge, more like in the back.

I currently eat and drink everything. Coffee 2x a day, drinking tea with lemon, eating pizza, basically completely normal since my symptoms disappeared. I can even drink coffee while laying down…

This phlegm… I recently experienced a week completely without it. Or I recently went on a 7 day trip to Italy where I was eating pizza, drinking coffee, alcohol and eating chips before bed and I had NO symptoms. Granted, I did take 20mg of PPI as a support but only like 2-3 times. And even when I took 20mg PPI at home I still had phlegm. In Italy? NOTHING. But now it comes back. It’s not there when I wake up, it appears after eating or drinking, but I don’t think it always appears. When I keep swallowing it’s there, but when I stop swallowing and don’t think about and get my mind occupied, it disappears. I’m also on Lexapro for my anxiety.

I don’t know how to go about this. Is this from reflux damaging my esophagus and throat? It’s weird because I had so many other symptoms and now everything is gone, like I’m healthy again. Is it my sinuses?

Help me please. I will try to go to the ENT again for her to see but I wanted your input first. Thank you. I’m 33.

Support Needed 👥 Gastritis esophagitis or ulcer?

took a very short duration of ibuprofen 200mg every 6 hours + dicloxacillin. One day I chugged water with my supplements while on these and my stomach burnt like fire for 20 mins then passed: anyway now three weeks almost after stopping both ibuprofen and the antibiotics (only took 5 pills…ugh) I’m having lingering behind the breast bone pain that’s just always there. Burping constantly, sometimes I feel hungry and have this intense feeling when I’m not hungry. I’m not in severe pain or vommiting but it’s noticeable and ruining my life lol. I just started changing my diet.

Could this be an ulcer? Or even an ulcer in my esophagus?

🥳 Success Stories [UPDATE] Nissen Fundoplication AMA

https://www.reddit.com/r/GERD/s/n5aDYWUqfg

Hi folks, back in June I made a post regarding the Nissen Fundoplication I had in order to treat my GERD and quite a few of you had asked for me to update as I went!

I am now 4.5 months post op and have been editing the post with updates as I go, but since updating doesn't always bring it back for folks to see on the feed, I thought I'd make a lil post reminding you it exists and link it in case it helps anyone with their own experiences, as I know this surgery isn't spoken about much in the long term by those who had it.

Tagging this as a success story as despite what has been going on, I am so happy I had the surgery and don't regret it at all as it's completely gotten rid of my reflux!

As always happy to answer any questions, and I hope my experience is of use to others 💛

Support Needed 👥 Can't take meds, feeling hopeless

I'm extremely sensitive to medications. Throughout the years I've tried things like pantoprazole, esomeprazole, and famotidine for GERD and every single one has caused such severe psychiatric side effects that I've had to stop.

I've made lifestyle changes where I could. I cut out a lot of foods that made it worse. I use a wedge pillow under my mattress (even though it doesn't seem to make any difference). But some changes I haven't been able to make. I'm bedbound and can barely sit up, so at best I can recline after a meal. Even when I'm fully upright, my regurgitation is so bad that I have to only drink small sips of water or it comes back up.

I also can't fast at night, because due to other GI issues I have to consume food in small amounts throughout the day and night. (This was advised by my dietitians. I'm barely getting enough calories and I'm underweight).

My reflux seems to actually be at its worst after several hours of not eating. I wake up during the night with reflux and pain, and it's only settled by eating something (usually a few saltines). Antacids do basically nothing for me. I haven't been able to sleep through the night without waking up and eating something to settle my stomach for something like 15 years.

I'm scared the reflux is going to cause permanent damage. It seems to only be getting worse. I've been seeing doctors and specialists for years, but none of their suggestions have worked so far.

I would greatly appreciate any gentle advice or emotional support. I've been trying for so long and working with so many doctors to try to find solutions, but I just keep hitting more roadblocks and dead ends. Thank you for reading.

🤒 Describing a Symptom Does anyone else experience false hunger?

I don't see people talk about this symptom very much, but it seems to be my most prominent along with chest pain and a sore throat.

It gets worse right after eating before settling down, unless I keep it on my mind. I understand anxiety probably makes it worse, but it's very confusing. My doctor doesn't think much of it either. There's no stomach rumbling, just a persistent pang of hunger in my upper stomach that almost burns sometimes.

Anyone else?

(It's worth noting that Gaviscon relieves the hunger pangs a bit)

🤒 Describing a Symptom Constant stomach, back and side pain, it shocks me how this could possibly all be GERD or Gastritis does anyone else get these symptoms?

I get the pain around my stomach, my back, my hip area and the back of my hip area, above the groin area, around my a\*s and down my legs. The pain is mostly in my leg back and side and it's been getting more persistent and a little more painful but not debilitating. I've also been constipated where I'm releasing stool multiple times a day but only in small amounts. My acid reflux is taking a bit of a back seat recently but im still getting the chest and throat pains. Does anyone else get this? I'm not on any meds but I do have severe anxiety.

😮 Advice on Symptoms This is worrying me

Hi there I’m really worried, and new to the group.

For the last 2 weeks I’ve had chronic reflux/stomach burning and nausea. I’ve since been to the doctors about it and was prescribed Lanzoropzole for the supposed ‘reflux’ and Cyclizine for the nausea.

But the last few days I’ve noticed something worrying my stool is loose (which I know it’s somewhat normal with what is going on with me + medications) but it’s kind of yellow? And I’m really worried about this

Has anyone else experienced this? I’m really worried and I have bad health anxiety and agoraphobia so it would just really help if people could share their experiences.

Many thanks in advance 🙂

Health anxiety issues

hi!

42/f here. been dealing with awful health anxiety/gad the last 3.5 years…largely centered around cardiac fears. have seen a cardiologist. echo good, “gorgeous“ nuclear stress test, have worn monitors (occasion pvc), cac of 0, low/great Lp(a), in range apoB, take atorvastatin since I’ve had high cholesterol most of my adult life (genetic)…

about 3 weeks ago I was pretty stressed and also got a deep tissue massage for the first time in about ten years. later that day, after drinking a ton of water, I started getting heartburn and it just never went away. I spent a week bugging out it was my heart. Chest pains and burning under my boob, center of chest. Back. Shoulder burning and upper arm burning.
went to primary and cardiologist. They both did ekg. Both were fine. I got omeprazole and over the last two weeks my symptoms greatly improved and almost disappeared. Yesterday I didn’t take it- as per instructed by the doctor to stop after two weeks and go to every other day. I was ok during the day, but by night I was extremely burpy and gassy. Laying down, I started getting the burning in my chest and it was in my shoulders and top of my arms. Eventually I took a tums and it was slightly better. Always better when I sat up. i did sleep for about 20 minutes but woke up choking. later on I had a sour taste in my mouth for about five minutes and I basically spent most of the night sitting up for some relief.

im going back to my primary later today to ask about weaning off it or other options. I’m just so stressed thinking this is my heart with all these overlapping things. I also get jaw pain from tmj that I’ve been dealing with. Has anyone experienced this shoulder: arm burning? Can this really be from not taking omeprazole for one day?
