I regret allowing this subreddit to scare me away from PPIs.

30M. I suffered the pain and anxiety for months as I tried every natural cure in the book. Every tea, every herbal supplement, every diet, every wedge pillow - I did it all. Some things helped, most did not. Nothing came close to the relief I felt after getting on esomeprazole (Nexium). I used them for six months to end the misery and get my life back. The taper-off was difficult, but I took it slow (another 8 weeks) and did it.

If you are suffering from acid reflux and combing through this subreddit for non-PPI cures, you are a person whose house is on fire but is refusing to use water to put it out. You don't have to stay on PPIs forever. But do yourself a favor and put the fire out. Get your life back. Then, you can sustain the post-PPI relief by making smart diet decisions and using herbal supplements that do help.

I know I'm not the first person here to say this; I'm just posting the message I wish my past self could have seen when things were really bleak.

💊 Advice on Prescription Meds Is my Nexium dose too high?

Hello been having a severe GERD flare up for a long time more than 2 weeks and nothing seemed to help, I started taking Nexium 20mg once a day and Gaviscon and it did nothing, I changed my life style and started eating foods that don't trigger reflux but it also didn't help. I went to a doctor and the doctor said I should start taking 40mg twice a day for a short period of time because my GERD symptoms are way too severe and aren't improving. I'm just concerned about the dose being too high.

Did anyone here take 40mg twice a day? And how did it go?

🤬 Rant about GERD nothing makes me happy anymore.

It's only been 7 weeks since this started and I'm already more miserable than I've been in a very long time. I'm losing weight that I can't really afford to lose, and I can't have coffee or spicy food anymore. It's really taking a toll on my mental health, because I relied on coffee and spicy food to help me feel better. They were the only things that helped take the edge off of my stress at work. I've been on omeprazole for 7 weeks and plain water still sometimes sets me off. I'm taking carafate for some inflammation they found in an EGD, but the inflammation was only found on biopsy, and wasn't visible. My knee is killing me and I can't take ibuprofen for it.

Thanksgiving is coming, and the thought of having to bring my own food is making me have a mental breakdown well in advance. I had finally repaired my relationship with food after years battling an eating disorder and now I have this adversarial relationship with it again.

I don't understand. One day I woke up and everything was different. The scope had no answers for me. My GI just keeps telling me to keep taking the meds and eating this awful bland slop. I haven't enjoyed anything I've put in my mouth in almost 2 months with nothing to show for it. I've given up any hope of getting better. I don't want to live if this is what it's going to be like.

😮 Advice on Symptoms Pulled muscle sensation.

Let me give a disclaimer that I am not currently Diagnosed with GERD (havent gotten checked out), but recently I've been struggling with pretty bad indigestion and acid reflux. My dad's side all mostly suffer with acid reflux.

Anyway. Recently, I've been waking up in the middle of the night with a very uncomfortable feeling between my shoulder blades in the middle of my back. It doesn't hurt when I breathe, like a pulled muscle normally might, and has only been happening when my indigestion symptoms are more intense.

Is this a common symptom of GERD or digestional problems in general? This is the first time I've been experience this feeling.

LPR aggravated by gastroparesis

So, I've had LPR since uni, and that is a long long time. But it was really silent, causing only occasional throat clearing and cough, no pain or globus. But after covid it became not so silent anymore, with pain and soreness, globus and mucus. Turned out that covid destroyed my gastric motility causing partial gastroparesis which is why LPR became so noticeable. Domperidone solved the issue by about 50%. Unfortunately due to side effects I can only take it for a couple of weeks and then I need to take a 1-2 week break, but these couple of weeks that I do use it are such a relief, guys. I hope my gastric motility will get better over time. They say post-viral gastroparesis is reversible, just takes a long time to grow back destroyed nerves. So I'm waiting..

🤒 Experience with these Conditions Anyone Who Got The Toupet Fundoplication Actually Heal Their LPR

I'm 17 days post op now. I got the hernia repair with the toupet fundoplication to hopefully fix my LPR symptoms in my throat. My throat no longer feels like it's on fire all the time; however, my throat still feels raw/sore, I have constant phlegm in my throat, especially after eating, that makes me have to talk louder and hurts my ears, and I have spit pooling in my throat at night as a side effect of the inflammation that I didn't have before surgery. I also have constant popping in the muscles in my throat.

Anybody who had this surgery and the LPR took a long time to actually get better post surgery. I did the surgery to hopefully sing again with my band, and at this point, I'm wondering if that's actually going to happen. My throat feels bogged down with phlegm and water-logged and my vocal cords hurt. The worst part is an ENT scoped me today and said my vocal cords didn't look swollen like they did in July. When the phlegm clears, my voice does actually sound normal despite my vocal cords hurting. I guess this really is a gas reflux disease and not an acid one.

🤬 Rant about GERD All my tests are normal but my stomach is not. Anyone like me?

25M. My symptoms:
• Tea/coffee gives me heartburn
• Cabbage, cauliflower, spinach → gas + urgent diarrhea
• Pasta and beans/lentils → constipated for 2–3 days
Done endoscopy, colonoscopy, and blood tests — all normal. Only my lactose test was borderline.
Now my doctor told me: stop all dairy and take amitriptyline 25mg at night.
Anyone here with the same pattern? Did dairy-free and this medicine help you?

😮 Advice on Symptoms GERD and Flu-Like Symptoms

Hello,

Had a weird experience earlier this week. I stupidly ate some of my (hiatal hernia caused) GERD trigger food (Mexican food! So good but so bad for me.) Sunday night and Monday I woke up with a massive GERD attack. Worst I’ve had in a long time!

A few hours after that I started developing some really bad flu-like symptoms. Terrible joint soreness, body aches, sore throat, cough, and the chills. I had what felt like a nasty fever and couldn’t get warm for a while! Literally teeth-chattering shivering while I had my furnace and a space heater going full blast. These lasted for about two days and I feel fine now thankfully.

My main question is, can GERD cause these flu-like symptoms? That has never happened to me before and I’ve been diagnosed with GERD for about two years. Or did a sudden Flu infection maybe trigger my GERD attack? Or was it just really bad timing and had the flu at the same time as a GERD attack? I really feel like they were related though, but I know human brains suck at causation so could be very wrong.

Thanks!

💊 Advice on Prescription Meds Replacing Pepcid with PPI?

Has anyone replaced their Pepcid with a PPI during a flare? I know it’s usually the opposite. My dr wants me to take a PPI in addition to the Pepcid I already take(20mg morning and night) for 2 weeks. I’m nervous to take both at the same time (I didn’t like how I felt last time I tried that but it could have been anxiety), but I know the ppi won’t kick in for a few days so I also am not sure if I should quit taking the Pepcid right away.

She also said to take it before my largest meal of the day, but I know it works best taken in the morning before breakfast. Should I just take the PPI in the morning instead of Pepcid, and tough it out til it kicks in?

🤬 Rant about GERD Next Steps?

Hi all, I’ve been experiencing acid reflux for over a year. I took Omeprazole, ordered by my primary physician, and it helped somewhat but got progressively worse. GI had me do an endoscopy and gastric emptying study that showed nothing. GI changed my meds to Pantoprazole and told me to follow up in 2 months. Yes, the Pantoprazole has helped but is this my life now? I’m concerned that if I tell GI the meds are working, he’ll stop trying to get to the root of the issue.

Meal Rec 🍎🍌🥑🥬🍗🍚 Meal replacement

Hello! Im new here, and feeling miserable. I started Omeprazole 3 days ago after a horrible panic attack alongside acid reflux. I was given it at urgent care. I have now found it very hard to eat solid foods. While im overweight (and could lose some) I know little to no calories is not good, what are some shakes or smooth foods like apple sauce I could eat to make up for the lack of calories lately?

And could this be due to Omeprazole or just an anxiety thing (I have pretty bad health anxiety 😭😭)

Edit: I've been trying to eat rice and just fail, apples seem to be fine though? Idk my body hates me

I tried different meds, Nexium, Prilosec, gas x, the only thing that helps my acid reflux is Mylanta (liquid antacid). But it tastes horrible. I still burp constantly. It's horrible. 😮 Advice on Symptoms Sensation of something stuck in throat

Hello!

New to this sub, but I’ve been doing a lot of research about the symptoms I’m experiencing and it’s led me here. I know there are similar posts but would appreciate any specific insight.

I was eating chicken piccata at a restaurant a few days ago, and experienced the sensation of what I thought was maybe a caper or small piece of chicken going down the wrong pipe and getting stuck in my throat. I wasn’t choking and was still able to talk/breathe but was coughing a bit and definitely felt like something was stuck. It’s now been multiple days and I’m still having the same sensation of something feeling stuck at the base of my throat, and it’s triggering my gag reflex/making me pretty nauseous and just overall uncomfortable.

I’ve always dealt with post nasal drip so I’m not sure if that’s related, but everyone in my family experiences GERD/indigestion and seems to think that’s what this is, especially after eating a dish that was so creamy/carby. The feeling is almost constant and is just really freaking me out, especially because I’m supposed to be traveling tomorrow and I’m worried it’s going to make me feel sick or limit what I can be eating without feeling terrible. I’ve been taking pepcid chewables and drinking tons of water, but was curious if there are any other quick fixes to help resolve this feeling of something sitting in my throat? I’ve never been to a specialist doctor or anything and am about to move across the country so I really don’t have the ability to try and schedule an appointment with a GI/ENT/etc for probably at least a few months, so any insight is greatly appreciated.

💊 Advice on Prescription Meds Switching from Pantoprazole to Voquezna?

Has anyone made the switch? I’ve been on 20mg Pantoprazole twice a day for two years now. I’m starting to have breakthrough reflux while I get worked up for my hiatal hernia and wanted to hear others experiences while I research and decide. Any pros to switching? Cons? Or anyone that is on it and loves it?

Right now the Pantoprazole has caused hyperplasia in my stomach and gives me vivid nightmares every night without fail. It was tolerable until it stopped preventing the acid:( I can’t do Famotidine either because I get a reaction from it.

Sharp, stabbing chest pain that radiates to my back, but little to no heartburn. Could it be GERD?

Hey everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone here has experienced something similar, particularly with GERD, esophagitis, or esophageal spasms.

I've been dealing with recurring chest pain for several weeks. My main symptom is sharp, sometimes stabbing pain right in the centre of my chest. It's very rarely a burning sensation like typical heartburn. Sometimes the pain is slightly to the left or right of centre, and at times I also feel it through to my back, particularly around the upper back and between my shoulder blades.

The pain comes and goes. Sometimes the back discomfort feels like pressure or as though I need to stretch or crack my back to relieve it.

One thing I've noticed is that eating generally seems to ease the pain a little, rather than make it worse. For example, I had sharp chest pain around lunchtime today that settled somewhat after eating. Tonight, however, I've had quite a bit of sharp, stabbing pain. There have also been occasional times when swallowing itself has hurt and made the pain worse.

I've also experienced throat discomfort, a lump-in-the-throat sensation, acidic burps, and a metallic taste in my mouth. Burping, sitting upright, walking around, and sometimes drinking fluids seem to help.

I've been experiencing frequent PVCs (premature ventricular contractions) for months, particularly when lying down at night. I've had a Holter monitor, echocardiograms, ECGs, and other cardiac investigations. I'm prescribed metoprolol 25 mg twice daily, which has significantly reduced the PVCs. I've wondered whether reflux or esophageal irritation could be contributing to them, although I don't know if there's a definite connection.

For the suspected reflux, I'm currently taking Nexium (esomeprazole) 40 mg twice daily, Zantac 150 mg twice daily, and Gaviscon as needed. So far, I haven't noticed any real improvement from the Nexium, despite taking it at this dose.

I also took ibuprofen regularly for many months in the past, which I've now stopped, so I'm concerned about possible gastritis, an ulcer, or esophageal irritation.

I've had a fairly extensive cardiac workup because of the chest pain. My most recent emergency department visit included blood tests, ECGs, and other investigations, and I was discharged after the results were reassuring. My troponin was 3 ng/L, measured approximately nine hours after my symptoms began. I also had a coronary calcium scan about two years ago, with my GP reading the score as 0.34.

I'm waiting for a gastroscopy to investigate what's going on. I'm wondering whether this could be related to esophageal irritation or an esophageal spasm. I've read that esophageal spasms can cause sharp chest pain that feels similar to cardiac pain and can sometimes radiate into the back.

Barium Swallow Question

Hi, I just had my barium swallow done but realised after coming home that they didn’t tilt me in different positions. Was told to only stand and sip the barium liquid and slightly rotate my feet positions.

I am hearing that you’re meant to be turned on your back/ side etc?

Should I query this with the GP? I am unsure why they didn’t do it with the range of symptoms I have.

Thanks

New to the show

Have had severe coughing fits for the past many years (I cough a lot tbh, nothing helps- not diet or cough drops or abstaining from alcohol or whatever) to the point where I'm gasping and ready to puke. Lungs checked out fine. Sinuses checked out fine. Blood tests fine. Got a box asthma test, not asthmatic. I don't feel any symptoms of heartburn at all. Finally got an EGD yesterday and there's no damage but the pics do show a hiatal hernia. Dr is putting me on esomeprazole for two months to see if it helps with coughs. Nothing more of a hassle than being out at a restaurant and having a coughing fit as bad as the kind Walter White had on Breaking Bad. Mid sentence I'll be talking and start coughing.

So I have a few questions.

1- does this track with what anyone else has or have had? if so did anything help?

2- dr. said to get a foam wedge for my bed. acid reflux doesn't really bother me when i'm sleeping. but I'm wondering if getting used to a foam wedge means when I go tent camping or on vacations if I'll be so used to a wedge I won't sleep well. So anyone who uses one of these under the mattress wedges, can you sleep fine in other beds that don't have that?

3- for those of you who got the hiatal hernia operation, are you glad you did?

Sorry for all the questions but I hope some of you have time to reply. Thanks in advance.

Please help me

Im getting desperate now, ive recently completed a 14day course of antibiotics for Hpylori. Few days after i was feeling progress, day by day getting better.

Then boom, hit me like a train again, i suffer with severe bloating and heartburn, to the point where i feel like i cant breathe. I sleep wedged up, no food past 6pm, literally eating eggs for breakfast and soup for lunch and evening meal. No trigger foods.

I keep having this sensation that i cant breathe, i used to panic attack over it, im controlling that but its still a fight and wipes me out during/after.

Doctor just changed me from pantoprazole to Esomeprazole. I have an appointment in 3 weeks and a refferal for MRI on my duodenum and a PHstudy on my stomach acid, UK waiting times on these are significant.

I keep feeling like im slipping back, and im desperate now, i have a 3 year old and 6month old and honestly, i have no quality of life right now.

I read someone took Silicol gel and that helped them, trying that today. Is there any other stories that peoplecan share where they found that instant relief? People keep telling me it takes time, but i feel like im loosing this mental battle and im struggling.

💊 Advice on Prescription Meds Omeprazole questions

Hello! I, 20 female, have been diagnosed with GERD since I was like 14. I was originally on omeprazole (Prilosec) for years, and it did wonders. However, after being diagnosed with Ehlers Danlos and seeing a specialist, she immediately said omeprazole is known to cause “bone death”, and was not safe for me to take anymore . This worried me because it was just doing so well with it. She said pepto or tums was safer, but neither provided any relieve. Im starting to have bad throat issues from the bile burning my throat at night.

Is omeprazole a true concern? I haven’t been seeing this specialist in about a year now, and my mother and grandma (who both have GERD and take omeprazole) just keep telling me to just start taking it again cause it’s never harmed them. I wanna do that but I’m curious what everyone else’s thoughts are on this and omeprazole being taken every day as a 20 year old female. Thanks

Getting off PPI's - My Experience

Hi Everyone,

I'm just here to discuss my experience getting off of PPI's and what it's entailed.

This started with my pantoprazole magnesium going on back order at my pharmacy which lead my doctor to substitute that with rabeprazole.

Rabeprazole took a toll on me that is hard to put into words, but the gist was that it gave me delayed stomach emptying (I would eat a meal and feel full/sluggish for 6+ hours after), severe anxiety, brain fog, and at points loss of focus. My doctor and I have chalked it up to a bad reaction to this medication.

Since this happened, I got my doctor to give me pantoprazole sodium (which for some reason the pharmacy had but they were reluctant to prescribe me it, perhaps because it's cheaper?) to tide me over until after an exam I had to write (note that in this exam I had lost focus about a half hour into the test which lead me to an anxiety attack and ended up losing a whole hour in the bathroom before building up the courage to go back out and finish it for the last 1.5 hours) which I just got the mark back and thank God I passed with high 80's anyway so I was more than prepared for it even missing the hour as a result of this medication destroying me mentally and physically.

Since the rabeprazole debacle, I decided I want to get off this PPI crap, since I definitely shouldn't of been taking it to the detriment I've found myself in. I had only started it because of a couple episodes of eating certain things before bed and waking up with acid in my throat and discomfort, or drinking too much alcohol and eating on top of that - which, these episodes, could've easily been resolved by taking a couple tums and going back to sleep.

This coming Saturday marks 3 weeks since my last dose, and the last-last dose I had planned on taking was a week before that.

The first 10-14 (like Dr Google says) we're brutal - the acid rebound was sometimes unbearable and I really had to fight through and stop myself from taking the pantoprazole sodium I still have. I just fought through with 20mg famotidine twice a day, which still didn't provide any relief, and tums/Pepto-Bismol tablets as often as I could while also eating like a 5 yr old (chicken nuggets, toast, nothing with anything but salt on it). Four days into the rebound (3 weeks ago) I caved at 3am Friday night and took a pantoprazole because I was just so miserable and couldn't sleep and it was causing me a lot of anxiety but I regretted taking it and haven't taken one since.

I won't lie the first 10 days were excruciating; bloated, sweats, no sleep, anxiety from not sleeping/eating normal, feeling like I can't do anything (I can work from home so I managed to do that when I felt I could), not going anywhere, no alcohol, no take-out, no deserts/candy, nothing - I essentially lived like a monk for the first 3 weeks and only now in this 4th week am I getting back to normal and eating regular types of meals again. The positive from this lifestyle is I've shed about 15 pounds down from 260 to 245 so I can attribute something good to this endeavor - lol.

I noticed the famotidine 20mg was making me dizzy, and lightheaded when I took it so I got off that and switched to 10mg famotidine (Pepcid OTC) twice a day. I'm at the point now where I'm starting to take it just as needed, and thinking that by next weekend (5 weeks of only 1 dose 4 weeks prior) I can try to drink for Halloween. Another thing regarding the 10mg famotidine I've noticed, is that if it has nothing to do to me in terms of reducing my acid production, then it ends up making me dizzy, or giving me heart palpitations, which has lead to me taking it only as-needed now which so far for the past 3 days is working like a charm.

I feel better, less anxiety in general, no brain fog, and generally feel better all-around now that my stomach is almost healed and I'm off this medication I didn't need to be on in the first place. I'm sharing this experience for anyone out there looking for a potential timeline or possible events they will encounter given they decide to get off it. I've taken pantoprazole for 5-6 years every morning, and these were the circumstances I encountered to get off this medication.

Note: I also realized I shouldn't be on PPI's when my aunt that's also on PPI's told me that before she was on them she could bend down and be choking on acid, which was not the case for me at all... I took it because of minor inconvenience but I never should've in the first place since it could've been solved simply by Pepto or Tums whenever it happened.

Success Story

I promised myself that once I started feeling better, I would come back and share my success story.

If you’re in the thick of it right now, I promise there is hope. Things really can get better, but sometimes you have to make changes along the way.

I developed chronic GERD after a stomach virus in April. Before that, I had experienced reflux maybe 1–2 times a week, but it was always at night and easily relieved with a Tums.

What happened after that virus was a completely different story.

I was experiencing reflux almost ALL day, every single day. I felt like I couldn’t eat or drink anything without triggering it. My diet became extremely restricted, and for months, I convinced myself that only a handful of foods and water were safe.

Boy, was I wrong.

Looking back, I genuinely believe one of the biggest turning points in my recovery was when I stopped obsessing over every little symptom and started eating normally again.

Over the past couple of months, I’ve made more progress than I did in the previous four months combined.

I still avoid highly acidic foods and drinks, but I’m officially drinking COFFEE and Poppi (a healthier soda) again after six long damn months!! Something I genuinely thought I’d never be able to do.

Throughout this entire experience, I saw four different naturopaths, ended up in the ER, had an endoscopy, and went through countless appointments and tests. My endoscopy showed no structural abnormalities.

Eventually, I found an amazing naturopath who recommended trying melatonin (3–6 mg nightly for at least eight weeks). There is some research suggesting melatonin may help improve lower esophageal sphincter (LES) function, although the evidence is still limited.

Around the four-week mark, I started noticing the biggest improvements.

I also started taking DGL about 20 minutes before each meal and again before bed.

I’m not completely symptom-free yet. I still experience some reflux, mostly after lunch, but it’s SO much more manageable. Usually, chewing a couple of calcium carbonate tablets is enough to settle it.

And here’s the part I’m most excited about…

In the past two weeks, I’ve needed Gaviscon maybe TWICE.

For comparison, I was taking it practically every single day for six months, often alongside PPIs, Pepcid, and whatever else I could find to get some relief.

I cannot even begin to explain how much this condition consumed my life.

I tried EVERYTHING. Acupuncture, chiropractic treatments, hypnotherapy, supplements, restrictive diets, you name it. I was desperate to find answers and terrified of being stuck taking a PPI forever.

I also recently completed a comprehensive stool test through my naturopath to get a better understanding of what’s happening in my gut, so I’m still working on figuring out the bigger picture.

But overall, I am feeling SO much better, and I finally feel like I’m getting my life back.

I know how isolating and exhausting this condition can be, especially when you’re dealing with symptoms every single day and feel like nothing is helping.

If there’s one thing I want people to take away from this, it’s that recovery isn’t always linear, and what works for one person may not work for another.

For me, it was a combination of time, finding the right support, changing my relationship with food, and finally allowing myself to stop living in fear of every symptom.

I’m not 100% healed, but I’m a hell of a lot closer than I was six months ago.

And six months ago, I would’ve given anything to feel the way I do today.

Support Needed 👥 Globus sensation has been ruining my life for almost a year.

I've had this sensation for a year now. For the first 4 months it was constant, now it's on & off, but when it's there it's impossible to ignore & lasts anywhere from 30 mins to an hour. I have Acid Reflux, Gerd, & GAD so I'm literally set up to fail with this lol.

I know I'm supposed to ignore it, not hyperfixate, but it's HARD. This shit HURTS, it feels like I'm being choked. I swallow & swallow but it just does nothing. The only thing that helps is fucking gum & sometimes tums. I get so worked up I start crying because I HATE feeling like this. Before this year I had NEVER felt this way & now it's like a fucking ghost always looming over me, making my MDD even worse.

I try to be patient, I try to remind myself it'll probably go away, but I've never dealt with an affliction for this long. I even quit smoking to try & help, but it didn't really do anything. I feel so stupid crying over something like this but I just NEED IT TO STOP. I would literally give my left tit to be rid of this horrible bullshit. Can someone please tell me it'll go away for good eventually? My doctor doesn't even seem to give a shit & I'm convinced the only way around this is death. Please help me.
