Mod post New automations regarding NSFW and glove handling posts influx.

With the influx of posts containing sensitive photos that should be marked as NSFW I have made new implementations. I have made it so anytime you try to post on this sub, you are met with a warning to mark your post with NSFW or to not post at all. I hope this helps with the influx of shocking frog imagery some of you are met with by accident if myself or other mods can’t get to it in time. But of course people will still disregard this message and the rules because it’s the internet. We also don’t want to block all these posts into a queue just in case there is a medical emergency. (Which should be dealt with by a vet but we still allow discussion) but some people still need that message or confirmation of “Hey you NEED to go to a vet for this” so we do not want to block that outright.

Not all of the mods are super active, I tend to be one of the top mods doing the most removal/ nsfw markings as I can to help the sub but if we miss something please report it so we can see asap! We can’t do it alone, we need your help too!

However as a moderator, and even our sub owner, there are certain things Reddit doesn’t have automations for. We would love an automated system that if a post has keywords it is automatically marked as NSFW, but that is not a possibility we can do. If you can please suggest this to Reddit themselves, it would help so many animal communities regarding sensitive posts such as these.

That being said if there are any ideas or implementations you think we should add to this subreddit let me know by commenting it below. I would love to discuss on how to make this sub a better and more fun place for everyone.

Edit:

Please also read some of my comments I’ve said on this post already as well before posting an idea, since I have replied to a few for reasons why and why can’t we do something.

Tree Frog Firewood storage? Nope, it's a greenie house now!

We keep a little bit of firewood in here for when the weather is wet. There have been at least seven greenies hanging out every time I have opened it recently. As you can see, they aren't bothered by me at all.

Hello froggy people of Reddit, I have a dilemma. At work today I stumbled (almost literally!) upon a very small, very dehydrated little frog. At first I thought the poor thing was already a goner from the sun+wind+asphalt combo that had him looking more raisin than amphibian. Luckily, he perked up with a shallow bath and some time indoors. My original plan was to make sure he was sufficiently rehydrated and energized before returning him to a marshy area near where I found him.

But here's the thing, I'm located in southern Alberta, Canada...and this little fella is VERY Green.

To the best of my Googling I suspect my small friend to be a Squirrel Tree Frog that is very far from home (and definitely not built for the cold). I cannot, in good conscience, release an animal into an environment they are not native to and especially not to mention one that would rather swiftly kill it with the rapid approach of winter. As good as it was for a temporary solution, he cannot remain in Tupperware and he cannot feasibly be returned to his native range. So I suppose any advice on how I should proceed from here would be very welcome.

Adding pics of his after & during rehydration bath to help confirm I have my ID right. Also adding NSFW flare just to be safe, I believe dehydrated counts as injured/ill.

Tree Frog Chill American Green Treefrog

Last weekend my husband came inside and got me to come see this rather large American Green Treefrog, hanging out on one of our banana trees. What a cool creature! When the sunlight would hit its skin it was just incredibly beautiful. I even ended up writing a haiku based on its eyes alone! Thought folks here my enjoy seeing this beauty!

I have a chubby frog that I had gotten from a reptile expo 2-3 months ago, he was emaciated, likely wildcaught and I couldn’t bear the guilt of leaving him at the table who had him dumped on them without a word. I got him and set up a hospital tank because I didn’t have any hope for the little guy and I’ve been around rescue animals from cats, reptiles, birds, horses, you name it I didn’t think he would make it more than 2 maybe 3 weeks. But I made sure the cleaner crew stayed stocked, I made sure there was always some TINY dubia nymphs with food so they wouldn’t harm him, just incase. Since he wasn’t expected to live long I avoided messing with him more than absolutely needed so I would water the “empty” tank and replace whatever inverts needed replaced and didn’t think much of it. To my surprise, in my attempt to put a tarantula in this tank and clear it out for different substrate more geared towards a different critter, there he was. Plump, MAD that I just dug him up from a perfectly good nap, and alive! I was so surprised I’m still so happy I couldn’t be more overjoyed I’m excited to fully deck him out a tank more suited for long term living!!

Ps. He’s just in the cup because I haven’t been able to give him calcium since he’s been underground and I wanted to make sure I watched him eat some of them. I got an adorable video of him eating that mealworm like .5 seconds after that photo I pulled my camera out at the perfect time!!

Tldr:
Emaciated frog wasn’t looking good lifespan wise, we both pushed through without my knowledge and in the end he fought to live and be fat again 🫶

we found this poor froggo hiding in our car engine from tennessee cold. we assume he is native to tennessee. I have named him pistachio. I will most likely keep him, atleast for a few months till the weather gets warmer. I just need to know what breed he is for his care. we own 3 whites tree frogs, and he looks like them, but they are definitely not native to Tennessee. He has a white stripe from his nose to his neck, is about the size of a thumbnail, has white spots along his back (beautiful!) and is moving around. I really wanna keep him, but I gotta know more about him and if I’m able to release him if it gets warmer.

Sick/ Deceased Frog Amazon milk frog prolapse caused by moss? What can I do ?

Hey guys,

Four days ago, I bought four Amazon milk frogs from my local pet store, Fressnapf.

Since I was buying four frogs at once, I suggested buying the enclosure they were already being kept in, at least temporarily.

I've been wanting frogs for a whole year now and have spent that time researching their care. My original plan was to get White's tree frogs because they're generally considered one of the most beginner-friendly frog species.

However, when I entered the store and saw these beauties, I was immediately curious. I asked the so-called "reptile expert" whether there were any significant differences between the two species in terms of care requirements.
He assured me that there was NO real difference apart from temperature and humidity. He also told me that he'd been keeping frogs for years, blah blah blah...

While inspecting the enclosure, I already had a bad feeling about the moss. I'd read multiple times that moss isn't recommended for many frog species because of the risk of accidental ingestion.

However, this guy seemed so experienced that I assumed there must be a reason why it was suitable for these particular frogs.
Yesterday, I noticed a strange-looking bump on one of my frogs. After doing some research, I'm pretty sure it might be a prolapse. I immediately moved the frog into a quarantine enclosure and tried the sugar-water treatment, but unfortunately, there has been no improvement whatsoever.

At first, I thought I might have accidentally fed him crickets that was too large or given him too many crickets, especially since he's the smallest of the four.

However, today I noticed that one of my larger
females has developed a small bump as well, around six hours after feeding. I also watched her accidentally get some moss into her mouth.
At this point, my intuition kicked in, and I decided to investigate whether this moss was actually safe for them.

Since I'd bought the entire enclosure preassembled, I had no idea what type of moss it was. I ended up doing a reverse image search, and if the results are correct, this type of moss may be unsuitable for them and could potentially cause digestive issues or even contribute to a prolapse if ingested.

I'm honestly at my wits' end right now. I feel terrible because I genuinely thought I was making the right decision by listening to someone who was supposed to be knowledgeable and experienced.

Has anyone here experienced something similar with their Amazon milk frogs?
Is there anything else I can do to help them, or is this something that requires immediate veterinary attention?

Could the moss actually be contributing to these symptoms, or might there be another explanation?
Has anyone had a similar experience with a pet store giving them incorrect care advice? Is there any way to get compensation from the store if I end up having to pay for veterinary treatment?

I'm really sorry for the long post. I'm just worried sick about them and would genuinely appreciate any advice from experienced Amazon milk frog keepers.

Thank you so much in advance

Eastern Spadefoot! (Scaphiopus holbrookii)

Tonight's heavy rain in Central Florida has brought a great bounty, and a symphony of calls. Toads, Cubans tree frogs, and one particular call id never heard before. You can hear the exact call at 5 seconds, and again at 8 seconds, in the video. Tracking its call revealed it to be an Eastern Spadefoot, I think. Im not too familiar with this particular amphibian but a bit of quick reading helped to remedy that. Apparently, a primitive amphibian, neither true toad, nor true frog.
