Rolled Gold - The Rolled Muddler

Post image
32 Upvotes

This is a classic PNW salmon pattern developed by Tom Murray of Union Bay BC in 1974. It was originally a saltwater stickleback imitation, but is used extensively as a small baitfish pattern in both streams and stillwaters throughout the PNW and beyond.

This variation is a bead headed olive/gold version.

-Hook: Tiemco 3671 BL size 10
-Bead: Gold brass 1/8” (3.2 mm)
-Thread: Red Semperfli 8/0
-Tail: Rolled Mallard flank
-Body: Gold Mylar #12 Uni
-Flash: Pearl krystal midge (8 strands)
-Wing: Folded mallard flank
-Overwing: Olive elk or deer
-Head: Spun olive elk or deer clipped

It can be tied in multiple colours to suit local small forage fish such as salmon fry.

I did a tying tutorial if you’re interested in checking it out: https://youtu.be/D7hx9RrATwo?si=8mhLlyUz8LfIVgW2

And here is a link to a blog post by the originator: https://flyfishers.ca/2023/10/rolled-muddler/

Was playing with my cat and realised the worm toys he has might make a good Sandeel imitation for saltwater species so gave it a go. Testing to see if a little foam paddle will give it more action

Has anybody on here ever used parakeet/budgie feathers before?

My pet parakeets started shedding feathers occasionally so I decided to start collecting them and made this lil fly using one.

Fly tyers, what are your three go-to patterns for largemouth and smallmouth if you couldn’t pack anything else?

Minnie Finn

A fun-sized Mickey Finn. Traditionally tied on 4xl or longer streamer hooks in size 2-8, I opted for a more normally proportioned size 10 nymph hook for my micro version.

Hook: Firehole 633 size 10

Body: medium silver tinsel wrapped front to back, then back to front.

Wing: 3 layers of bucktail, red-yellow-red

Thread: Danville waxed 6/0 black

Jujubaetis Advice

I know we have to have some CravenHeads out there and I need some advice. This is my first time tying up the Jujubeatis nymphs. I followed the recipe on Charliesflybox.com and bought most of the materials for the fly from the website. The original recipe calls for super hair for the body but on the website they have supreme hair which they specifically say is thinner but a good substitute. When I compare my finished product to other photos I feel like the colors aren’t as vivid. Is this just because of the difference between supreme hair and super hair? Is there another secret to getting a more vivid color? Does it even matter? I haven’t fished it yet so maybe trout don’t care and I’m just being picky. If anyone else has any tips and tricks to tying this fly I would love to hear them!

Decided to experiment with orange guinea feathers as a dry fly wing. Looks pretty good, if a little sparse. Curious to see how well it shows up on the water.

Hook: Firehole 633 size 12

Tail: woodchuck guard hair

Body: blood orange custom bamboo and wool dubbing blend

Hackle: speckled badger, Whiting heritage line

Wing: strung guinea fowl dyed orange

Thread: Danville 6/0 waxed black

Weedless flys

Howdy! I’ve been tying awhile and recently started doing more fly fishing for small mouth. This has led me to rabbit hole of small EWG hooks used in ultralight fishing, but it has me wondering if they could be used for fly tying? I’d love to know if any of you guys have done so and if so what patterns?

Looking to try this guy out soon. Spotted lanternflies have infested the area and I’ve been working to mimic it with the materials I have on hand.

Size 14 daiichi 1280 dryfly hook
8/0 black thread
Red crystal dubbing for the butt
Cut yellow foam with black sharpie stripes
Dark gray rabbit dubbing for the body
And deer body hair for the wing with spots added with a sharpie

Golden pheasant rump is from Irish Fly Supplies Ltd and the dubbing is from Blob and Buzzer. Amazing materials as always 👌

Pikechanger

Ignore the scary mask! I have always been terrible at trimming flies. Just cannot seem to imagine a shape and make it happen. You should see my EP Baitfish. So ugly. Little block headed idiots. Thusly, with scissors in hand, this became a little narrow and skinny. Resembles a pike. It just might scare all the fish away now, instead of catch any haha. But I’m going asking musky with it ideally anyhow. Nose is skinny because I got into making dubbing brushes last week, and ended up running out of the big size. Made the brushes, then tied it up. Maybe two hour process? Have lots of room to improve, but I think I like it enough. What do y’all think?

Hackle vs senko

Post image

Here‘s what I’m working on to see if I can beat my personal best with senko worms, it’s a purple seducer with rubber legs tied under a brass bead on a #4 stinger hook. Now that I’ve got the concept I’ll tie it in different colors and hopefully get to fish Lake Sonoma soon.
