Film Made my first short film at 18 :)

Monotone is now out on Youtube.

Watch it here- https://youtu.be/DVOlkIweIaw

About how I made it-

Originially started working on it for a contest called the TISDC but after failing to meet the deadline it became a fully personal project.
Starting from the wrinting the story I started world building and character desin in blender after which I started the animation which what took the longest time. I skipped the storyboarding part because I was low on time but that turned out to be a big mistake since I had to go through a lot of trial and error for the shots.

In all it was very fun although stressful. My writing ability was very confined because the contest need "moral of the story" narretive and had to follow a theme but still I think i did a decent job although it became a little too metaphorical.

Question Why has dialogue mixing gotten so bad that audiences need subtitles for everything?

The trend is undeniable. Most viewers now watch with subtitles on permanently, even with perfect hearing. As someone who cares about the craft, it feels like something broke in the audio pipeline.

Poll on it: https://www.getqibble.com/poll-detail/do-you-watch-everything-with-subtitles-on-even-though-your-hearing-is-perfectly-fine

Film Just launched a short film that I made completely by myself for 99% of the production in between raising a newborn and moving houses for under $200. NSFW

A couple of years ago I posted some behind the scenes clips from this short film and a few asked when they could watch it. Well, now is your chance! It played a few great regional festivals, including Art of Brooklyn, Smodcastle Horror, Chicago Horror Fest, and more! Love it or hate it, I'd still love to talk about it and tell you some of the secrets of how I was able to make the film, and if not that, convince you to make anything you can to support human art!

Question Struggling with Edit

Hey everyone! I'm currently editing a short film I directed, and I could use some help.
This is my first time cutting something this long, and I'm struggling most with the final air hockey match. We didn't get enough coverage, so I'm having trouble building a sequence that flows and makes sense.
I'd rather not ask friends, since I'm hoping for honest, unbiased notes. If anyone's willing to watch the rough cut, I'd really appreciate any constructive criticism, especially on pacing and that final match.
Thanks in advance!
Full film is 22 minutes. Please lmk if I can send you a link!

Discussion What was a film you couldn't get through?

Surely all of you have spent a substantial amount of time watching a wide variety of films. I just wanted to know, what are some films you were determined to watch and finish, but found extremely difficult to get through?

I'm a non-film student who tried to make a short film. I'm not a great colorist so I feel like some shots are rather bland. What do you all think?

Discussion Is "A [Your Name] Film" Pretentious?

Interesting discussion that came up on the FilmFestival subreddit, was just curious about wider opinion.

A poster said that if you've made a film where you wore many hats, "A [Name] Film" can come off pompous, compared to "A Film By [Name]".

I'm writer/director/DoP/editor/sound designer on my films and it honestly never occurred to me before that people would care much about the difference between these two phrases, but happy to be proven wrong. I think the former sounds cleaner personally.

Would love to know what you all think.

General We made a dictionary for film industry terms!

I think, no matter how many years you’ve been in the biz, the industry always has new jargon you have to nod your head along to and pretend to understand.

Someone used the term “FAST channels” in a conversation recently and admittedly I had nooo clue what they meant.

Like, total crickets!

Anyway, we got to thinking it would be very handy to have a dictionary with all the “industry lingo” in one place.

And so, after a lot of trial and error, we made it.

It’s still evolving but this is a searchable constellation with film and tv terms related to pitching, story development, sales, grants and much much more.

Very useful to have in your virtual-back-pocket if you ever need to look something up.

Looking for Work Best places to network in the film industry

How do people actually meet and get their first gigs in this industry? Are there specific events, festivals, online communities, or groups worth joining from abroad? And I’ve seen those memes about people adding everyone from a movie’s end credits on LinkedIn... Has that ever actually worked for anyone?

Discussion If you use grants to part fund your docs, then this might be useful

Hey all,

I'd like to hear how many of you use grants to wholly or part-fund your docs. It would be interesting to know if you gate keep this information, or if you're actively open to sharing where and who you apply to.

Most doc philanthropic grants are usually topic specific. My docs revolve around the intersection and coexistence between humans and wild/farmed animals - https://docsout.org/grants (this is open now and the EOI is due mid-November).

If you're willing, please list where and who you reach out to for philanthropic grants!

Thanks.

Full disclosure: I'm a journalist with the Los Angeles Times, and I'm researching a story on filmmaking in Saudi Arabia (where I'll be traveling soon). I'm looking to speak to people who have tried their hand at filmmaking in Saudi Arabia and are willing to talk about their experiences, the state fo filmmaking there, production rebates, etc...

Discussion I feel like I'm not as passionate as I should be for Film Production

Hi! I've just started my first year working towards a degree in Film Production at my university (A broad university, not one which specializes solely on film). But about a month into semester, I keep having this feeling that I don't really belong? It's not like any students or professors are bullying me; I love it on campus. But rather, I feel like compared to them I'm not as passionate when it comes to either making films, wanting to make films, or most importantly, watching films. I don't go to the theatre that often, mainly because of gas, prices, scheduling, etc. But I also don't really put aside much time to watch movies at home on streaming.

In my current film class it's a lot of going over film techniques and everything which goes into a film, and then watching a film which covers a certain aspect quite well. This in itself is fine, and I kinda enjoy it. But the thing which keeps making me doubt my interest is when it comes to whether or not we've already seen a film. For example, my professor earlier today was going over design; set props, makeup, etc. One of the examples was one of the Batman movies (I don't know which one) and he made a passing comment of "Everyone's seen this movie, right?". It definitely wasn't meant to be a negative comment towards anyone, but I still felt mildly embarrassed about it.

I know watching films isn't the most important part of being a filmmaker and film enthusiast, but it's still given me a sort of imposter syndrome when it comes to the rest of film making as well. Next semester I believe will be the first hands on class I'll have and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't extremely anxious about it. I'm worried not only about not being able to understand equipment, but also, once again, the social aspect. It's been told to us many times now, but reaching out and befriending other students in similar areas can help, especially when we'll have to inevitably need someone to play a part in making a film. My problem however is that I'm extremely anxious. It took me almost a month into the semester before I introduced myself to other people at the university. Even if I manage to befriend someone who would want to help me with my films, I'm very anxious when it comes to sharing my ideas and explaining my passions to other people who I think will judge me.

I know these fears are probably a bit ridiculous and I'll hopefully get comfortable in my program, but IDK. I wanted to make a reddit post to maybe see if someone else can just reassure me or tell me "I've been in a similar position, and you'll be alright". Sorry for the ramble, it's a bit of an interesting first post to this subreddit lol

Discussion Location Managers in the UK: How do you navigate councils and local authorities?

Question for UK location managers and crew: When shooting outside the M25 or major hubs like Manchester and Birmingham, what is the single most frustrating bottleneck you face with local authorities? Is it slow road closure turnarounds, lack of a clear single point of contact, or inconsistent property pricing? Wondering what a model 'film-friendly' council office actually looks like in practice from your side of the fence.

General [Method Production Suite] Open Source Software for Film Production

Hey there party people. On the heels of ArtCraft's amazing work on open source apps in post production, I figured development and production could use some love.

Introducing Method Production Suite! Our launch apps so far:

- Method Budgeting

- Method Scheduling

- Method Storyteller (Writing)

- Method Reader (PDF to fdx/osf for epub view and editing previously exported drafts).

All still very early clean room builds or early development of apps I've been working on for a while.

If you like I'm looking for people to help provide feedback, develop, etc!

Question Archival Footage resources

Hi All,

I have shot a film that requires quite a lot of archival footage, mainly UK seasides and Cairo Egypt. Working on a shoe string budget so free use footage and public domain/cc would be ideal. Just wondering if you had any suggestions for places I could source footage.

Thank you so much!

Question Working/living in Taiwan as filmstudent

Hello!

I am a 29 year old film student from the Netherlands. Next spring I have quite a lot of free time which I would like to use to travel to Taiwan, and possibly stay there for a couple of months.

I know it is of course quite difficult to just go to a country and try to 'live' there for a few months. But I would like to try. I would like to spend my time working, and as I'm a filmstudent, ideally I would spend my time in Taiwan help working on films. Although I'm relatively experienced I don't care too much what I would be doing there, just helping and working on any kind of filmmaking would be fine.

Are there people in this sub who could give me their opinions about how plausible it is to do this, and also have a kind of nice time while seeing other people. It is of course always hard as a foreigner in a new city, especially for only a few months.

If you are, if know people or organisations who could use free help, please send me a message! Or if you just have any advice in general.

Thank you so much.

P.S. I would like to go to Taiwan because I love Taiwanese cinema, the culture and landscape really speaks to me, and two friends of mine are going there on holiday somewhere in the spring as well

Film We made a 51-minute Malayalam independent film for ₹3.5 lakhs. After 3 years, it's finally on YouTube.

Hi everyone,

I'm Angiruz, a filmmaker from Kerala, India.

I want to share my film WREATH, a 51-minute Malayalam film that we made with a budget of ₹3.5 lakhs and just six days of shooting, working with new faces.

The journey took three years to complete. As an independent filmmaker, one of the hardest parts isn't just making a film with limited resources. It's finding the audience who might connect with it.

WREATH has travelled through film festivals, and now it's publicly available on YouTube. I'm sharing it here because I'd love for people who appreciate independent cinema to discover it.

🎬Watch WREATH: https://youtu.be/x4FAj9GyhY4?si=LPSDuzhCTzbfJ-up

I'm not expecting everyone to love it. I'd genuinely appreciate your honest thoughts on the storytelling, visuals, performances, and anything you think we could have done better.

Thank you for giving an independent film a chance.
