Discussion Has anyone made a cubed apple box?

Post image
• Upvotes

I just got off set with a smaller local director, Samuel Felinton, and he was using a bunch of these 4"x4"x4" cubed apple boxes which he then gave to the cast whoever would take them.

We used four of them to raise a 2 ton car frame+engine+people+rig and it came out perfectly fine.

I then talked to him afterwards and he had told me that he started using them after not wanting to take up as much space as a regular dimensioned apple box so he made a bunch of these cubes for this set.

I attached a picture below, and I was curious, has anyone else used these before?

Question should i include my day jobs on the resume i upload to backstage to explain a hiatus?

• Upvotes

i’m currently looking for work as a production assistant. i recently came back to the entertainment industry after a 4ish year long hiatus where i worked 2 different receptionist jobs. i do have a recent film credit as a PA on an indie movie from this year, but before that my most recent relevant credit is from 2022. i’m updating my backstage account and am wondering if anyone has any advice for how to structure my resume? should i include the 2 receptionist jobs to explain the hiatus, or should i leave those off and just focus on highlighting my production experience? this is my first time using backstage (i have the account from years ago but never really used it), so im not sure if the resume i upload is even that important anyway or if most people just look at your projects section instead. any advice is much appreciated. thanks!

Question I can’t tell if my boss is overstepping or if I’m too sensitive?

• Upvotes

For context, I (23M) have been working in a small marketing agency for the past 5 years now as a video editor and a videographer. I joined as an intern and once my internship ended my boss offerred me a job (once he found out someone else at the company was leaving). So I joined them whilst studying a ‘media arts and production’ degree at a fairly large local uni.

When I started working there, I was quite shit and I learnt very quickly to leave my ego at the door. I was often told by my boss that my edits were shit, that they didn’t make any sense, that I was too slow, etc. And tbf, I completely agree with him, it was shit. He never trusted me enough to go on a shoot, it was only when the shoot was on a tight budget, only then I’d be put on. I’ve been micromanaged to Nth degree. Sometimes, he’d remote connect to my computer to watch me work when he’s not at the office.

Fast foward a couple of years and I’ve switched degrees (doing a civil engineering degree), developed my editing skills, and they sometimes put me on shoots (only if the budget is tight), I’m properly burnt out and I’m really fed up with my boss, but I can’t really tell if my annoyance is valid.

I feel like I’ve never done anything creative in this workplace. It’s often just editing what they want with no room for creativity. Even when there is an interesting project my boss would go out and film it himself with no consultation with the rest of the team. And because of that, every shoot feels the same, every edits feels the same, every client has the exact same look and concept.

He’d often tell me “Hey, we pay you guys really well compared to other marketing agencies”. I’m on a casual rate, I get paid ~$27 USD an hour. I don’t know if that’s good or bad, but even if its decent pay, I don’t think that’s something you have to keep on reminding me about. I’m also the only editor in the office who knows how to use After Effects (and they have me do after effects work) and I get paid less than the other editor.

Something else that happens would be how he would always make a comment about my freelance/passion projects and I can’t tell if I’m just being a wuss over it. Every time I do something outside of work I’d get comments like, “why don’t you edit like you did for xyz client”, and then when I do he tells me to revert back to how we always did it. He’d also downplay the shit out of my passion projects by saying “I saw it, the grade was shit” or “I could do better”. He once told me to not use the orange and teal look on my ‘out-of-work’ projects because it looked too similar to their videos and style (I find it stupid because its my style of editing anyways, of course its going to have similarities). I can’t tell if they’re valid criticisms or if they’re trying to deflate me.

He also started outsourcing their work overseas, which he’d often tell me “I’m thinking of doing all of the edits overseas” i.e. you’ll be out of a job soon. There was one time where he was sitting right next to me and he was on a zoom call with an overseas editor and he referenced a edit that I did for a client, he said: “This is something we did for this client last year, as you can see…” he laughs “it looks quite shit, but of course you could do better”. Maybe my skin isn’t tough enough for this game.

Something else he’d also do is he’d promise to put me on an interesting shoot in the future and then just won’t put me on it when it came around. He’d say stuff like “I have a shoot with Amazon in 5 months, I’m going to put you on” and then when it would come around he’d go “Sorry man, we need you to edit at the office”. He’d pull this stunt off 3-4 times every year, it feels like a “carrot on a stick” situation.

There was one time where he was caught snooping around a co-workers private messages to see if they going to get poached by another company.

I’m on the tail end of my degree and I’ve put in my resignation months in advance (because I know they won’t be able to handle a 2 week notice). All I got was a ChatGPT response and then got told to stick to engineering lmao. He then tried to pull the “I have 2 documentaries coming up and I was going to put you as a DP”. I then explained to him how I know he’d never put me on and then he just ignored me and walked away.

The thing is, I still love being creative. I love nerding out about camera gear and different edits and colour grades. I love trying to figure out how someone did an edit or how a story was constructed. I love watching BTS clips of major productions (even though I know I’d never be able to be on one). I love watching Corridor Crew and their VFX breakdowns. I was known as the camera guy at school. I’ve been obsessed with this for so long in my life but now I have no interest in my professional work. I feel like I haven’t been creative in so long, it just feels like a boring corporate job with glitter poorly thrown at it.

The thing is, I have so many thoughts and I don’t know which one’s to listen to. Am I really a shit editor? Should I just leave the industry while I can? Is my skin isn’t thick enough for this industry (or life in general)? Am I just inexperienced? Is this a normal thing in the industry?

What do you guys think?

Offer [Hiring] Paid Creative Intern

Who we are

We’re an early-stage startup building a new way to make video. We license real actors, models and influencers and generate films, ads and video with them. No set, no crew, no shoot day. The person in the film approves every cut and gets paid every time their face is used.

What we’re doing

Making generated video that’s indistinguishable from the real thing. Real faces, real light, real movement, real voices. We think this is how most of the world’s video will be made, and we’re building the company that makes it.

Who we’re looking for

Someone who thinks like a filmmaker and works like an editor. You know how to:

  • Film: frame a shot, pace a scene and tell a story in seconds
  • Generate: use AI video and image tools hands-on, and make the output look real, not generated
  • Edit: cut, grade and keep a film looking consistent
  • Sound: build dialogue, effects and music that sell the scene

The role

  • Paid internship, 3 months
  • Remote, Bengaluru preferred
  • Work directly with the founders on real projects
  • Strong interns convert to full-time and help build the creative team

Question Characters act the same no matter who they're with

Is it just me, or do so often films forget that people show different sides of themselves depending on who they're around? I don't act the same way with my uncle as I do with my high school friends, and I'm different again at work. Characters usually keep the exact same personality no matter who they're with, which isn't how real people work.

When a character does act differently around someone, like getting nervous or suddenly chatty, it's almost always there to push the plot forward. It serves that one scene and that's it. Outside of those moments, there's no real thought put into how they'd shift around different people

In other words it's basically a question about networking but also how to navigate the business side of this whole industry + how to pitch a film, get funding and get something made.

Discussion Help me choose a title for my new doppelganger screenplay (horror)

I’m working on a new feature screenplay, and I've been thinking about what title do I actually want to give it. You could help me choose. It’s for a doppelganger movie (horror). It’s okay if you don’t know anything else about the project, we're focusing on which title sounds interesting enough for you to want to see the movie.

Pick one or more of the following title ideas:

Doppel

Double

Faces

Ringer

Uncanny

Look-alike

Thank you for participating if you are. Bonus point if you put all of them in order.

Discussion Whats the best/ more ethical scenario

Inspired by a post I saw (and commented on) on [r/aftereffects](r/aftereffects):

You have a shot you need Vfx work done on. You are a solo filmmaker working with $0 budget. You are already wrapped filming and didn’t really have a plan or the skills to do the Vfx yourself, and no one in your immediate circle/ network can do it for you.

You only have one of these two options:

  1. Use ai to assist/ do the shot. For the sake of argument the shot turns out perfect and looks very realistic.
  2. Ask strangers online to do the shot for you for free.

Let’s assume that if you hired an actual vfx artist for this it would be in the $2000-$3500 range. This is the most important shot of the film.its a fairly complex shot.

Obviously the “best” answer is to have had a plan prior, and budget accordingly and pay someone for their service if you have no one in your network you can pull favours from… or just adjust the scope accordingly.

But you need to pick from the two option above.

What one is more ethical?

Question I want to make a short film

I love film and have for years at this point. I’m currently 19 and no longer feel like what I’m currently doing (computer science) is what I truly want to do, and feel like I should pursue my passion for film. I want to go to film school and create something for others to enjoy, but I have no clue where to start. Before I fully commit to this, I want to make an effort to create a film of my own but I’m totally unsure where to start. I have an idea for it, but unsure how to execute it, what equipment I can reasonably afford and use for it, and things along those lines. Any advice?

Question Why has dialogue mixing gotten so bad that audiences need subtitles for everything?

The trend is undeniable. Most viewers now watch with subtitles on permanently, even with perfect hearing. As someone who cares about the craft, it feels like something broke in the audio pipeline.

Poll on it: https://www.getqibble.com/poll-detail/do-you-watch-everything-with-subtitles-on-even-though-your-hearing-is-perfectly-fine

Question Struggling with Edit

Hey everyone! I'm currently editing a short film I directed, and I could use some help.
This is my first time cutting something this long, and I'm struggling most with the final air hockey match. We didn't get enough coverage, so I'm having trouble building a sequence that flows and makes sense.
I'd rather not ask friends, since I'm hoping for honest, unbiased notes. If anyone's willing to watch the rough cut, I'd really appreciate any constructive criticism, especially on pacing and that final match.
Thanks in advance!
Full film is 22 minutes. Please lmk if I can send you a link!

General [Method Production Suite] Open Source Software for Film Production

Hey there party people. On the heels of ArtCraft's amazing work on open source apps in post production, I figured development and production could use some love.

Introducing Method Production Suite! Our launch apps so far:

- Method Budgeting

- Method Scheduling

- Method Storyteller (Writing)

- Method Reader (PDF to fdx/osf for epub view and editing previously exported drafts).

All still very early clean room builds or early development of apps I've been working on for a while.

If you like I'm looking for people to help provide feedback, develop, etc!

Question Archival Footage resources

Hi All,

I have shot a film that requires quite a lot of archival footage, mainly UK seasides and Cairo Egypt. Working on a shoe string budget so free use footage and public domain/cc would be ideal. Just wondering if you had any suggestions for places I could source footage.

Thank you so much!

Discussion AI filmmaking. Yay or nay?

Interested in what people think about AI filmmaking. I don’t think AI filmmakers should be considered filmmakers. When you remove people from the process, it’s not art anymore. I don’t care what level.
A lot of people disagree. I’m against anything AI related when it comes to art. It’s a slippery slope.

A lot of people disagree, especially those that are calling themselves AI filmmakers. What happens when AI starts making their own films and people aren’t involved at all? Will people start changing their minds then? Will these “Filmmakers” start feeling left out? That day is coming.

Question Editing films

What’s the best software I can use to edit films if I’m just getting into the hobby, ideally cheap. Thanks
