I made the switch to Fedora Workstation back in January, and it’s been one of the cleanest, stable Linux experiences I’ve had. I wish I had switched earlier.

This is my daily driver for coding and everyday stuff, would love any suggestions or tweaks

I use my PC exclusively for gaming. Out of curiosity, I switched from Tumbleweed back to Fedora to see just how minimalistically Fedora can be installed. The Workstation Edition or the KDE version are way too bloated for my taste. Here’s my setup, consisting of a small basic KDE Plasma desktop. The only programs installed on the system are Steam, Firefox, and Timeshift. No bloatware, just 1,493 packages. Not bad, Fedora!

News PSA: On Fedora 46/Rawhide, default repo files are in /usr/share/dnf5/repos.d, not /etc/yum.repos.d

After upgrading from Fedora 44 to current Rawhide (F46), I couldn't find fedora.repo, fedora-rawhide.repo, or terra.repo in /etc/yum.repos.d anymore. My /etc/yum.repos.d only had a couple of local repos and some .rpmsave leftovers.

It turns out the default/vendor repo files now live under /usr/share/dnf5/repos.d:

$ ls /usr/share/dnf5/repos.d
fedora.repo
fedora-rawhide.repo
fedora-updates.repo
fedora-cisco-openh264.repo
terra.repo
...

$ rpm -qf /usr/share/dnf5/repos.d/terra.repo
terra-release-46-5.noarch

dnf5 reads repository directories in this order, according to dnf5.conf(5):

/etc/yum.repos.d
/etc/distro.repos.d
/usr/share/dnf5/repos.d

So /etc/yum.repos.d is now for local/admin overrides, while package-provided defaults live under /usr/share. The .repo.rpmsave files in /etc/yum.repos.d are just backups from package upgrades and are not read by dnf.

You don't need to edit the vendor files. To change a repo setting, use:

sudo dnf config-manager setopt <repo-id>.<option>=<value>

For example:

sudo dnf config-manager setopt google-chrome.enabled=0

That writes an override to /etc/dnf/repos.override.d/99-config_manager.repo. A manual drop-in under /etc/dnf/repos.override.d/ works too.

Useful commands to see what is actually active:

dnf repolist --all
dnf repoinfo <repo-id>
rpm -qf /usr/share/dnf5/repos.d/<file>.repo

I'm not sure whether this is specifically a Fedora 46 packaging change or just the new dnf5 vendor layout. It makes sense conceptually: package defaults in /usr/share, administrator config in /etc. But it was surprising after the upgrade, especially for third-party repos like Terra whose release package now installs its .repo file there too.

Did anyone else run into this? Curious whether this is documented anywhere or whether people are still editing /etc/yum.repos.d out of habit.

Discussion Is an AMD GPU Preferred for Fedora?

So I've read lots of threads, articles, and watched many videos and tutorials and it seems like a common theme is that while Nvidia can be made to work with Fedora it's generally just easier to use AMD.

I'm going to be dual booting (separate drives) between Windows 11 and Fedora/KDE and I have an AMD 5600g CPU and just recently picked up an Nvidia 3070. Since I don't have a lot of time to tinker with this setup because of other life obligations I'm trying to make this as easy as possible. It seems like just getting an AMD GPU with my AMD CPU will just work out of the box with Fedora (I'm not doing any AI work).

I'm thinking that both the initial setup and ongoing updates are going to be easier with AMD. Not sure what AMD GPU is roughly equivalent to a 3070, but I can research that and start looking for something used. But I'm interested in any feedback anyone might have if my thinking is accurate that going all AMD will just make this whole process easier.

Discussion Fedora Workstation (used as immutable) vs Universal Blue (custom image): which is objectively the better OS?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning my definitive setup. My goal is to have the best possible operating system in terms of stability and reliability for daily development. The learning curve is not an issue for me.

I currently use Fedora Workstation, but I manage it with an immutable philosophy (Flatpak for GUI, Toolbox for CLI tools, minimal host). I also use Secure Boot with TPM disk unlock (LUKS).

I'm torn between:

  1. Fedora Workstation (keeping my current "pseudo-immutable" management)
  2. Universal Blue (Bluefin/Aurora) with a derived image: I'm willing to manage my own build repository (e.g., using BlueBuild) to customize the image, thus getting the stability of atomic updates and full control.

The question for those with direct experience:
If I choose uBlue, I know I'll have to manage the build pipeline for my image. Is it really worth it compared to a traditional Workstation used in an immutable way? Also, considering I rely on Secure Boot and TPM unlock, will I face friction with uBlue, or is the transition seamless?

If you had to choose for yourselves, knowing you'd have to get your hands dirty, which path would you take to get the definitive system?

Thanks for your honest experiences.

Support Root encryption password not working, can't access my system

Thumbnail

I went on a trip for a week and noe I'm trying to decrypt my drive to access my fedora-kde and the password keeps failing. What is encrypted is the root partition, so when I boot the system I get prompted to enter the password. Now, the most logical thing would be that I forgot my password, but I really don't think I did, I keep trying combinations but I'm certain I know the correct one. I want to know if it's possible that something happened/broke.

Details I share just in case they matter:

- I usually have my laptop on, all the time, and I only reboot it once every 2 days to apply the updates, this week I left it off and un-plugged, also, I probably updated it one last time before turning it off.

- I also have windows in this same drive.

- I came from my trip, turned on the laptop, it immediately went to windows (I do this on purpose, the laptop boots to windows automatically), realized that's not what I wanted, rebooted the laptop, spammed the appropriate key to select to boot on fedora, hit enter a couple times, enter my password, and failing.

Here I leave some pictures of what happens when I enter the password for the last time and wait some seconds.

Discussion I was watching Death Note and ended up making Ryuk for my Fedora desktop

Post image
8 Upvotes

I was watching Death Note and thought it'd be cool to have Ryuk walking around my desktop while I'm coding or just doing random stuff.

Looked around for something like this but couldn't find what I wanted, so I ended up building it myself lol.

He walks around on his own, has different animations, and you can control his movement speed, pause him, hide him, etc.

Made it for Fedora GNOME. Thought some of you might find it cool.

What do you guys think?

Discussion Fedora Everything Installer..

It's been a long time since I used the everything installer and was wondering in the everything installer if you were to select KDE then not select anything in the additional software side, are you getting the same as the KDE Fedora ISO just with updated packages or will it be missing anything without checking off some boxes?

Support Fedora out of the box support for Snapdragon laptops any time soon?

Both my current laptops are snapdragon which I got for great discounts, they work pretty great for everything, even on Windows the ARM ecosystem has improved a lot. I've been trying to boot Fedora ARM on these but even with secure boot disabled or following this guide I haven't been able to get it running. Currently typing on A16 with X2EE cpu. Anyone else has been able to run Fedora on X1 or X2 laptops?

News PipeWire 1.6.10 is now in Fedora 44 stable

PipeWire 1.6.10 is now available in the stable repos for Fedora 44 and Rawhide. Fedora 45 still has it in testing, at least when I last checked.

It’s a bugfix release. The main fixes are some potential crashes in the JACK layer. Locking was added around the port array and mixer list. A possible infinite loop is gone, and ports and buffers are now freed before disconnect.

A regression in the PSD rear delay upmixing is fixed too. A delay of 0 wasn’t working and gave a big delay instead. Pops when draining unsigned formats are fixed as well.

The rest is smaller. The Pulse server no longer queues an unlimited number of REQUEST commands for paused clients in some cases. Bluetooth cancels RegisterApplication calls when the adapter goes away. The ALSA plugin handles XRUN better, and the GStreamer plugin sets plane strides and offsets correctly.

Update with sudo dnf upgrade --refresh pipewire*

Support Fedora no longer works on older CPUs

UPDATE: the root cause was vvdec-libs package installed from rpmfusion-free.

I'm running an older dell laptop with Core 2 Duo CPU on Fedora 44. It used to work just fine for what I was using it but it seems that a month or so ago some packages, KDE Plasma and SDDM in particular, were compiled targetting newer CPUs.

I get these kind of errors zsh: illegal hardware instruction (core dumped) kinfocenter.

It sucks that they'd done it in the middle of a release. Ideally it should be done on a new release so that people wouldn't end up with a broken system out of the blue.

No choice but to switch to something else now. It was good while it lasted.

Discussion Anyone daily-driving Rawhide? Looking for long-term advice and gotchas

Hi all,

I recently upgraded from Fedora 44 to Rawhide (currently F46) and I'm running the COSMIC desktop. So far it has been surprisingly usable, and I'd like to keep it as my daily driver.

I'm not chasing a "stable" kernel. My plan is to leave kernel updates alone and only step in if I hit a kernel panic or a boot failure. I don't care whether the kernel is RC or final as long as it works.

For those who have run Rawhide for months or years:

  • What breaks most often? Graphics, COSMIC, SELinux, or third-party repos?
  • Do you update daily, or wait for a compose? Do you reboot after every kernel update?
  • Do you keep the default installonly_limit=3, or keep more kernels? Any rollback setup (Btrfs snapshots, separate /boot, USB rescue)?
  • COSMIC-specific: any recurring issues with portals/screen sharing, fractional scaling, multi-monitor, suspend, or NVIDIA/AMD?
  • Repo hygiene: I currently have rawhide, fedora-cisco-openh264, Terra, rpmfusion-free-rawhide, and google-chrome enabled. Anything there that tends to cause trouble on Rawhide?
  • Are there packages or services you exclude from updates to avoid known breakage?

I'm fine with occasional rough edges. I mainly want to avoid a broken boot or data loss. If you've been on Rawhide long-term, what would you tell someone starting now?

Thanks!

Thank God I'm not an NVIDIA user.

Support Battery runs down while laptop should be asleep (Dell XPS)

Whenever I leave my laptop, I have to completely shut it down in order for battery life to be preserved. If I simply close the lid and leave the laptop on sleep for a few hours, the battery runs down at the same rate it would if I was actively using my computer that entire time.

This is an issue I've had both with Arch in the past and currently with Fedora.

My laptop is a Dell XPS 15. If anyone has had this issue and was able to resolve it, definitely lmk what you did!
