I bought a little over three yards of "black denim" from an online resale site. I got the fabric today and I was so excited. It's a solid deep black, zero stretch, and just the right weight for the utility skirt I was going to sew. One side is a tightly woven denim but the other side was like a heavily brushed, fuzzy almost-flannel which seemed odd. My white laundry basket was grey with tiny fine particles of fuzz from shaking out the fabric. My first thought was, I'm going to have to empty the lint tray in the dryer more than once while it dries.
I washed it by itself, thank goodness, because when I pulled it out of the washer, that fuzzy size had transferred a ton of its fuzz to the drum of my washer. I put it in the dryer with a couple of dryer sheets and came back about 15 minutes later to clean the lint tray. I opened the dryer and a solid black dryer sheet fell out. That's when I realized that the fabric lint was dying the inside of my dryer and had probably done the same to my washer. I rubbed a corner of an old white dish towel on the fabric and the corner came back gray.
So, sigh, does anyone know what kind of fabric is like a light to medium weight denim/twill type weave with a heavily brushed and fuzzy underside, and is dyed without any type of fixative to prevent it from ruining everything it touches?
Also, is this kind dye bleeding the type that can be mitigated with something like Rit Dye Fixative?
