Can you permanently make stretchy fabric unstretchy?

I have a few shirts/hoodies that are quite stretchy. The materials are listed as being 65% Polyester and 35% Cotton.

I hate the fact that it feels like it's always trying to very lightly choke me. Is there any way to permanently loosen the stretchiness so that it hangs like a basic cotton fabric and doesn't "hug" my body?

Like some kind of chemical soak that would deteriorate whatever elastic compounds there are?

For a small first run, how do you check that fabric can be reordered later?

One risk I’d check before approving a fabric for a small first run is whether you can get a close match when it’s time to reorder. A stock colour may come from a different dye lot later, while a custom shade can have a higher minimum than the first batch.

I work in garment manufacturing at STXGarment in Dongguan, so I see this from the production side. Before approving, I’d ask whether the fabric is stock or custom dyed, how much is actually reserved, what lead time and minimum apply to a repeat order, and how shade differences are checked against the approved reference.

For those who’ve sourced fabric for a brand or project: has reorder availability affected your fabric choice? What did you wish you’d confirmed earlier?

I've never seen a fabric like this before. Can you help me identify it?

I've uploaded a shot of it here:
https://imgur.com/a/P9AcSC3

It's got a sheen where the light catches it, but it doesn't look super shiny. The dark parts fade all the way to black. The wrinkling towards the left side of the image makes me think it's not a velvet. The edge looks like trim, not fraying which makes me think it's probably a vintage curtain panel. A silk maybe? I'm not looking to find this exact panel, just the fabric.

Full disclosure, I'm not that knowledgeable about fabrics. I'm just a photographer who loves this backdrop and would like to use something similar in my studio. Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

where you guys buy moon + stars fabric in bulk?

been looking for moon and stars fabric for a bigger project and buying it by the yard from normal craft stores gets expensive pretty fast...ive seen some really nice prints online but half of them only sell small cuts. i been checking Alibaba too just to see what wholesale fabric options is there and theres alot more designs, but im not sure what fabric type would be best. mostly want something soft, maybe cotton or cotton blend, not that shiny costume material. anyone here bought printed fabric by the roll before? what GSM or fabric type you guys usually go with, and how much do you normally need order before price starts getting properly wholesale instead of just little discount?

What fabric should I use to paint wings?

Hello! I’m planning on being a rosy maple moth for Halloween, and I’ll be making my own wings, but I can’t figure out what fabric I should use.

Criteria:
- inexpensive (broke college kid, so I need to to be on the cheaper side)
- somewhat comfortable (will be wearing all night)
- holds paint (acrylic) well without looking bad
- accessible (something I could buy on Amazon quickly or find at a hobby lobby!)

I would appreciate any help greatly! Thank you!

Did my dry cleaner ruin my Gucci blouse? Is there any way to save it? 😭

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I live in New York City and took my 100% cotton Gucci blouse to a professional dry cleaner, following the manufacturer's care instructions. It was in excellent condition with absolutely no discoloration before cleaning.
Unfortunately, I didn't inspect it after pickup and only discovered the damage three months later when I wanted to wear it.
There are multiple yellowish-brown stains scattered throughout the blouse. Initially, I thought they were just stains, but when I tried gently rubbing one with water, the fabric ripped. I tested another discolored area, and it tore under very light finger pressure!
The fabric seems severely weakened specifically where the brown discoloration appears. I'm wondering whether this could be chemical damage or scorching from improper pressing.
I'm devastated because I love this blouse and would much rather restore it than seek compensation.
Does anyone know what could cause this kind of damage to cotton? More importantly, is there any realistic way to restore it, or is it permanently ruined?
Since I'm located in NYC, I would also really appreciate recommendations for reputable textile restoration specialists who might be able to save it.
I've attached photos of the discoloration, holes, and care label. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Fabric Identification Request

Hi! I’ve been searching for the past couple hours to find a match for the fabric being used for the front and side hair on this doll! It looks like a mix of minky and felt fabric, but more rigid.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions on what this could be!!

Looking for Small & Independent Fabric Shops to Support!

Hi! I am planning on opening a fabric store in my town, since our only real option right now is Hobby Lobby. I’m very early in the process but am looking for places to source fabric.

One of my biggest goals is to support other small businesses, independent fabric designers, and smaller suppliers whenever possible, rather than relying on large wholesalers. I would love for this shop to be a place that brings our local sewing community together while also supporting the people and small businesses behind the fabrics we love. We already have a great local quilt shop, so rather than overlap with what they offer, I’d like to focus more on apparel fabrics and give people in our area access to a wider variety of materials for garment sewing.

With that in mind, what are some of your favorite small or independently owned fabric shops, designers, or suppliers?

Fabric ID: black denim with a heavily brushed fuzzy underside

I bought a little over three yards of "black denim" from an online resale site. I got the fabric today and I was so excited. It's a solid deep black, zero stretch, and just the right weight for the utility skirt I was going to sew. One side is a tightly woven denim but the other side was like a heavily brushed, fuzzy almost-flannel which seemed odd. My white laundry basket was grey with tiny fine particles of fuzz from shaking out the fabric. My first thought was, I'm going to have to empty the lint tray in the dryer more than once while it dries.

I washed it by itself, thank goodness, because when I pulled it out of the washer, that fuzzy size had transferred a ton of its fuzz to the drum of my washer. I put it in the dryer with a couple of dryer sheets and came back about 15 minutes later to clean the lint tray. I opened the dryer and a solid black dryer sheet fell out. That's when I realized that the fabric lint was dying the inside of my dryer and had probably done the same to my washer. I rubbed a corner of an old white dish towel on the fabric and the corner came back gray.

So, sigh, does anyone know what kind of fabric is like a light to medium weight denim/twill type weave with a heavily brushed and fuzzy underside, and is dyed without any type of fixative to prevent it from ruining everything it touches?

Also, is this kind dye bleeding the type that can be mitigated with something like Rit Dye Fixative?

For a small clothing run, what do you include in a fabric quote request?

Comparing fabric quotes can get confusing when two suppliers interpret a short brief differently. I work with STXGarment (东莞市晟泰鑫服饰), a garment manufacturer in Dongguan, China, so I see this from the production side.

For a first apparel run, I’d put the intended composition, knit or woven construction, target weight, usable width, finish or handfeel, color reference, and estimated quantity in the request. I’d also confirm whether the quote is for greige, dyed, or finished fabric, and whether the same lot can be supplied for bulk.

For those who have sourced fabric for a brand or project: which detail made quotes easiest to compare? What did you overlook the first time that caused a mismatch later?

Clothing Fabric Preferences for Health

When you shop for clothing, what do you look for in the fabric in terms of health impact? Do you want it to contain little to no plastic, natural fibers, recycled material, have a chemical safety certification, something else, or it doesn't matter?

Advice on dying polyester

I need some advice on dying a polyester dress. I was looking to find a vintage dress that fits the character I’d want to be for Halloween (Anna from Possession) and she has an iconic blue long sleeve dress. I found a dress that’s the perfect shape but unfortunately it’s a bright violet. I was going to strip the color with Rit color remover but the material is polyester. Is there any way that I could dye the dress (perhaps canceling out the purple?) that could result in the blue color I’m hoping to achieve? Thanks!

What fabrics grow lints the best?

I have a childhood pillow that have these tiny lints/burrs on them. Rubbing them helps me sleep so much better. The pillow started smooth but developed these lints overtime. My pillow case started having them too but not all pillow cases have it. Now I am on the look for fabrics that will likely have these lints so I could look for pillows/cases that use those fabric.
