Where can I get tips for an experienced DM?

I've been DMing a group for several years. I'm rarely a player, which is fine. I feel like I still have a lot to learn.

Here are places where I've gotten great tips so far: Colville's "Running the Game" and "Campaign Diaries", "So You Want to be a Game Master" by Alexander, "Lazy DM" by Shea, and BG3

I've tried to get into Critical Role or other live play series, but I simply don't have the attention span for 3-4 hour shows. Also, you don't get to see things from the DM's perspective. I can't tell what had to be improvised. I don't know what the DM felt like they had to handle or steer. Colville's Campaign Diaries are great because he tells you issues that arose and how he handled them.

I'm considering joining other D&D groups as a player, just to see how different DMs run things.

Are there other places you recommend I look for DM tips?

Discussion Is this potion too strong?

Hi. This is my first experience as a DM for D&D, so I am unaware if something like this already exists.

A potion whose effects, once consumed, can be triggered in 1 hour.

If you take damage that would bring you to 0 HP, you immediately gain 1 Hit Dice + CON modifier as Temporary Hit Points, as well as Resistance to physical damage. You also cannot receive any sort of healing. After 1d2+1 turns -- or after the THP gained this way are depleted, whichever happens first -- you fall unconscious and dying, with 2 Death Saves already failed.

For context: the item is for a one shot with 3 level 3 players, and I don't really really care if it's balanced or not, but I want to know if I have understood the power scaling of DnD items, so to say

Resource Has anyone gotten these books? Are they good?

Hey everyone!

I've seen this ad many times on my Facebook and it seems to offers a lot of material for DMs. I have not dared buy any of these, because I'm a bit fearful of Facebook ads and false representation... Has any of you gotten their hands on these? If so, what is your opinion? Is the content worth it? Is the quality good?

Would you recommend?

Alguém teria interesse em me ajudar?

Resource The Red Tithe - A Folk-Horror One-Shot for 5E/5.5E, Playable at Levels 3-4, 10-11, or 17-20

For generations, the isolated village of Hollowmere has sacrificed one of its own to keep an ancient horror imprisoned beneath Saint Harrow's Church. Now a blood-covered survivor has fled the village, claiming that everyone is dead. Something has gone terribly wrong, and the adventurers must uncover what happened before it's too late.

The Red Tithe is a 75-page dark fantasy and folk-horror one-shot adventure for D&D 5E (2014) and 5.5E (2024), designed for 3-6 characters and approximately 4-6 hours of play.

The adventure combines investigation, exploration, roleplaying, moral dilemmas, and challenging combat as the characters investigate an abandoned village, encounter monstrous creatures, and uncover the truth behind a centuries-old tradition.

What makes the adventure different is its multi-tiered structure. The same story can be played at three separate level ranges:

  • Tier I: Levels 3-4
  • Tier II: Levels 10-11
  • Tier III: Levels 17-20

Each tier features appropriately scaled encounters, DCs, and a different manifestation of the main antagonist, the Blood Moon Beast.

The manual also includes 6 custom monster stat blocks, 3 battle maps with 8 total versions, and 4 tokens for tabletop or VTT play.

Whether you're looking for a Halloween horror one-shot or a dark adventure to integrate into your ongoing campaign, The Red Tithe is designed to work in either setting.

I've included several preview pages, maps, and one of the monster statblocks in the images!

You can find the complete adventure on DriveThruRPG!

My Kickstarter for 300+ Mythological Items for 5E and 5.5E is also live now! The campaign includes a physical hardcover, as well as printed editions of my previous manuals.

You can find more of my creatures, magic items, and manuals on DriveThruRPG, my Linktree, or over at r/JonnyDM!

Mezro: Ruins of the Lost City | Tomb of Annihilation - Full Story Retelling (Part 13)

The journey around Chult continues! In this episode, half of the party delve deep into the lost city of Mezro, their goal to slay the hordes of undead that dwell within. Dark work is at play, however, as they are not the only explorers attempting to unlock the secrets of the ruined city...
The other half of the party are dealing with the fallout from the massive attack on the pirate hideout (detailed in Part 12), as it seems winning the battle was only half of the challenge...

Appreciate all the support for the series so far! Thank you for allowing me to share with other ToA adventurers. This module is fantastic, and this is a a way for all to be able to experience it!

I turned our backyard into a live-action Dungeon Crawl obstacle course! Here is the campaign.

We set up a full physical dungeon crawl in the backyard, complete with traps, athletic skill checks, and boss encounters. Here is the gauntlet:

The Shipwreck & The Ascent: The adventure begins on the deck of a ship running aground! The party must abandon ship, stepping down onto the slick, rocky shore next to the churning blue ocean. From there, the coastal path crumbles away into a sky-bridge. Players must balance across narrow wooden planks suspended high in the clouds, where the forest below looks like nothing more than scattered autumn leaves.

Shattering the Ward: A shimmering magical barrier blocks the path. Players have to channel their focus and throw a magic missile directly through the glowing ring's weak point to break the force field.

The Spider-Fire Dungeon: A deadly puzzle grid blocks the ruins. The plain stone tiles are the only safe havens. The magical fire runes burn too hot and high to jump over, so they must be avoided entirely. The sticky spider webs will trap you, but an agile player can leap completely over them to the next safe tile!

The Gatekeeper's Challenge: After surviving the grid, a goblin brute demands a short athletic trial: kicking a heavy stone sphere directly into the cavern mouth to open the gate.

The Sleeping Leviathan: The only bridge through the swamp is a massive sleeping beast. Players have to move fast—running across the crocodile's snout, stepping up onto its head, bounding across its ridged back, and sliding down its tail before it wakes up!

The Mountain Climb: The outpost alarm is sounding! The party must throw themselves down the twisting fire escape slide to evade capture. Hitting the ground at the mountain's base, they have to hike up the steep grassy slope to the summit. Near the peak, they must drop down and squeeze through a narrow, dark crack in the mountain wall to slip into the secret valley unnoticed.

The Monkey King’s Hoard: The final boss room. Players leap across floating stone pillars to reach the high altar. The legendary Monkey King lounges beside the treasure chest, barely looking up. "Oh, no," he yawns, his voice dripping with heavy sarcasm. "You've reached my secret lair. Please, whatever you do, don't take my precious treasure." It's a brilliant ruse! Players must call his bluff, claim the chest, and jump back instantly before the venomous spider trap springs from inside!

Resource I got tired of herding my table on group chat, so I built a free scheduler just for D&D campaigns

I run two tables (a long Descent into Avernus campaign and a kids' Phandelver game), and scheduling was eating more of my prep time than the actual prep. Polls get ignored, "what works for everyone?" turns into 40 messages, and somebody always forgets the session moved.

So I built dmcal (yes, AI assisted coding was utilized, though my background is in software development): https://dmcal.lukantan.com

How it works

  • Players mark when they're usually free once (weekly, every other week, or things like "1st and 3rd Saturdays"), plus one-off exceptions.
  • You get a heatmap of the whole table and a ranked list of the best times. Set a quorum ("we play with at least 4") and it flags which slots meet it.
  • Pick a time and everyone gets an email with one-click Going / Maybe / Can't buttons. No sign-in needed to RSVP, which matters more than I expected.
  • Calendar invites (Google and .ics) are in every email and update when you move or cancel.
  • A reminder the day before includes a "Last time…" recap and your active quests, so players show up remembering where they left off.
  • You get an email whenever someone's RSVP changes, along with the current tally.

DM-friendly bits

  • Schedule a whole run of sessions at once (up to 6) with a single combined email.
  • Kids or players without accounts: add them as "managed" players and RSVP for them, or they can use the email buttons themselves. A player can also bring people ("Dexter +2").
  • Session notes and recaps, a place for campaign docs, and a link to your D&D Beyond campaign.

No cost to use at the moment - mainly looking for some feedback, what could be improved, what features could be added, etc. Already considering adding SMS support for scheduling notifications, though there's a cost to that of course.

There is a "Send Feedback" option under your profile icon once you login. Excited to see if this benefits anyone else other than myself.

Discussion New Campaign

I'm putting together a campaign for some old and a couple new players to my group and I ended up with the idea that they all start off dead. I'm having trouble thinking of how to start them off like that and how to turn their adventure into a way to regain physical bodies. I have time to come up with something but they're wanting to do session 0 this upcoming Sunday and I still haven't fully figured out their journey. I just want something that doesn't leave me waiting until that session 0 to get everyone's background and stuff and then coming up with a start from there

Planning to do the forbidden and run a 1-20 campaign - will it hold up at later levels?

I'm a relatively new DM with this being my third campaign. My first went level 1-10, and my second 1-6. I've been warned against having games that go to to higher levels because combat becomes a slog, but I feel like it would work for this specific game.

Without going into extreme detail, it is focused on kingdom building set in a patch of inhabitable land on the back of a incomprehensibly large monster in the Far Realm (though the players won't be aware of this early on.) Past level 13-15, there will be no more threats that the players could fight in standard combat, as it shifts more towards politics with other factions to control the monster they're on to bring them to an exit to the far realm in a plane their faction can survive in long term.

From my previous games I've realized I like roleplay and worldbuilding over combat and math. I believe this would work with the setting, but if you have thoughts on it, let me know. Thanks
