Hey bridge trolls, we've got some extra mod help now so we're going to work on some quality of life improvements around here. Starting with these megathreads we'll use to help update the Wiki. (As an aside, we're still happy to give people access to the Wiki if they want to help with updates)
Going entirely by vibes, I think this would be the most helpful topic to start with. Feel free to give any suggestions, tips, notes, links, whatever you may think. might help someone looking for a place to live in the area.
Some suggestions for things you might contribute:
1.) Thoughts on different neighborhoods and towns - Please be accurate and polite. We all know some areas are more unfortunate than others, it is totally ok to mention that, but be sure you're current and respectful. What an area was like ten years ago may not be accurate anymore.
2.) Resources for finding places to stay (renting & buying)- Things that may not come up on google. This is one place advertising for yourself or someone you know is acceptable (though be sure not to DOX anyone, including yourself.)
3.) Resources for unhoused people - Either temporary or permanent. If you have knowledge of shelters or resources, this would be a great place to add them.
4.) Reviews for different rental companies - Be careful to, again, be accurate. We all know some places have a reputation for a reason and you are more than welcome to leave negative reviews, just don't use this as a place to grind your axe or get revenge.
5.) Questions - For now this would be a good place to ask us about any particulars. We are going to start doing a new "Moving to Duluth" post weekly via Automod like they do in r/asheville on the suggestion of one of our users, but I'm saving that until after these Megathreads have run their course.
6.) Financial considerations - Is there anywhere affordable to live? What are taxes like in the different cities?
7.) Schools - Pros and cons, other considerations?
Just some ideas, I may use some of these for other megathreads. Also, please keep politics out of this to the best of your ability. Nothing derails these things faster.
Thanks everyone! You all rule.

I’ve read the endorsement article like 5 times and still can’t figure out what they’re saying

I know it seems a bit wacky but I encourage everyone to read this to get a feel of what I mean! I want to make sure I mention that this is not a promotion of any kind I'm not asking for money nor do I profit from this activity.
For the past 9 years (in various different areas) I've been wearing a super hero suit and helping the community I'm in at the time. I'm now in the Duluth area and looking for new members for my team!
What I do and ask for others to help me in:
As I'm sure everybody In this subreddit knows the homeless population in Duluth is rather large. Most of what I do is homeless outreach. Making sandwiches and walking around Duluth handing them out. During nighttime patrols they're focused around making sure people get home safely from bars or in rare instances crime prevention(I report everything to police and only intervene if it's a safety concern. I am not a vigilante in any way).
I do all of this in a super suit. That's how I like to do it however it is NOT a requirement. If you want to help in street clothes you're more than welcome. But I do encourage people to have fun with the real life superhero concept. Especially during the more dangerous patrol types (night time patrols in a rougher area for instance) as wearing a bullet proof vest and armor looks very scary and suspicious but with a cape or something similar on it that concern is minimized.
If the more sketchy patrols aren't your thing that's perfectly fine! Id love help just handing out food! You're welcome to assist in a super suit or in normal wear!
If you wish to remain anonymous that's fine. You can private message me about this with questions!

Curious if anybody is having grief dealing with the recent notice by Comfort Systems / City of Duluth Utilities dealing with converting their billing to the new Tyler Portico billing system? It has been a nightmare for me. My autobilling was canceled through Comfort Systems, and I have to somehow figure out how to switch to the new outsourced billing system. Anybody done this yet? I am pretty tech savvy but this one is giving me grief.

Anyone know what the story is for that closed down gas station? The one on woodland across from the dominoes and UMD. I was wondering if they are gonna sell it off, I haven’t seen any change to it in a while.

Does anyone happen to know how they make their Agate sauce that they serve with the sweet potato fries? I’ve been in love with it for years. Would love to replicate how that we are out in Wisconsin.

I know this isn't strictly in this city but I wonder if any of you have fond memories about it to share or have friends who might want to go before it closes.

Hey! I recently moved up here for school, and I'm looking for any broken or old computers and equipment to refurbish before it ends up being recycled.

I keep bumping into Shiprock management Apartments and every time I follow up , its usually SR management and their rent + tech fee,+ pay fee + app + + +
Is this a thing in Duluth?
First time in Duluth, staying temporarily at co-worker's home until I find a reasonably priced apartment walking distance to St Lukes.
I really like the area.

I've always said Sny-vlee but I've had friends who I went to school with say some variations on what I listed in the poll. I just need to know if I'm an outlier in my pronunciation.

Hello, I’m new to the area and picked up some inline skates to have a hobby. I’m looking for a good, flat, smooth spot to get better at inline skating that’s not Munger or the Lake Walk. Any recommendations? Thanks!

On our way to Duluth for a day trip, it's our first time almost 10 years visiting and we are going with our 6yo little one.
We plan on visiting Canal Park and walking around the area, are there any other low cost options you would recommend we check out as a family?

What is the general public’s thoughts/opinion/or views of the DECC’s executive director Dan Hartman?
Are there any former or current employees here that would care to share feedback?
This post is meant to be an open discussion and welcomes all opinions. A general vibe check.
If you’d like to comment anonymously send me a DM. I will respect your privacy and all DM’s will remain confidential.
Edit: my reason for asking is because it seems like they are consistently hiring. Screenshot of GlassDoor review with a 27% approval rate in comments. Just wondering if it’s a place worth applying.

Heard from a reliable source that the downtown library is going to be torn down. No plan to rebuild or relocate yet, but it's coming down.

Are there any places that are public and free that are haunted/creepy? Like a place to just walk around and feel the creepy vibes, not an investigation or anything? TYIA!!
South of exit 252 two cars head on collision. Looks bad. Any information?

Hey mountain bikers. I'll be coming into the Duluth area with my kids this weekend. I've taken them through much of Chamber's Grove and some of Hartley Park in the past, and they've seen a little of the Traverse. When I brought them last year (before I had my own mountain bike), they found Chamber's Grove tricky with so many leaves down on the trails. So, assuming that things are dry enough to ride, do you have any suggestions for where to ride this time of year? Are downed leaves less of an issue right now or in certain areas?

Google will no longer seek tax breaks for its proposed Hermantown data center, city officials announced Wednesday, following months of community concerns.
Without the abatement, the city estimates the project would generate more than $240 million in regional property taxes over 20 years, including nearly $90 million for Hermantown and more than $120 million for St. Louis County.
Google were originally asking for up to $80 million.
